This was the comment of the many former members who came from near and far to join in the 100 year celebration of the birthday of Greenway United Church on Sunday, June 8. Responding to the 260 in- vitations sent by the Centennial Committee they came from Detroit, Sarnia, Toronto and London - you name the place, there was someone from there. When they filled the auditorium, still they came and were ushered to the Sunday School rooms, where, fortunately a public ad. dress system had been set up, thanks to "Chuck" Box of Parkhill. Greenway United Church had its beginning in 1860 when Mrs. James McPherson gathered the children in the community into her home on Sunday andheld Sunday School for some time. The first gathering held in the nature of a church community event was a meeting held in Henry Shank's woods in 1868, Then in 1875 a Methodist Episcopal Church was built on the site where the United Church now stands. That church was replaced in 1897. Several smaller churches in the area which joind with this church in the pioneer days, included, Bethel Methodist situated on the farm now owned by Mrs. Irwin Luther; Salem Methodist, Couple at wedding By MRS. HAMILTON HODGINS WHALEN Mr. & Mrs. Ernest Ferguson were guests at the wedding of Carol Ashworth and Lyle Beatson at Ilderton Anglican church on Saturday and the reception in the Ilderton Curling Club. In 1926 the Corbett Presbyterian Church and the Greenway Methodist Church joined to firm the Greenway United Church. Since 1884 no less than twenty- six ministers have served the church which is of the Grand Bend Pastoral Charge. Surviving today are Rev. J. M. Coiling, London; Rev, S, J. Mothers, Toronto; Rev. J. B. Moore, Kitchener; Rev, K. M. Wood, Victoria, B.C.; Rev. W. C, Smith, Oshawa; Rev, A. E. Holley, Kitchener; Rev, C. A. Brittain, Minesing and Rev. G. E. Morrow, London, The present minister, Rev, H. G, Dobson will be succeeded by Rev. H. J. Moore of Cedar Springs on July 1. Rev. A, E. Holley was the guest minister at the morning service on June 8 and another former minister, Rev. C. A. Brittain will be the speaker at the continuing celebrations on October 19. Rev. K. M, Wood who had planned to attend the services in October has now regretfully declined the invitation. Of special interest to many of those attending the June 8 celebration was the display of pictures and other items arrayed in the Sunday School room, under the supervision of Mrs. Harold Brophey, daughter of the late Wilbert Young, to whom much credit is due to the preservation of much of the early history of the church. Another highlight of the day was the attendance of Mrs. the McCormick . home, London, 1481491I, who had observed her looth birth- day on February 6. She had prepared "greetings." which were read by Manuel Curts, as were greetings frem other for- mer members and former ministers, Following the morning service a luncheon was served, by the LIM, in the "shed", which in- cidentally was built in 1927, An afternoon pp:Irani, arranged by Mrs, Ruby Isaac, featured the, Junior choir of the Church, the Ladies quartette and a former ladies quartette which included Mrs. Lois Thompson, Lieury, and Mrs. Dorothy Young, Lucan; the Ropp family. of Nairn and the Watchmen, a. gospel singing quartette from Burlington. Music at both the morning and evening services was supplied by the Watchmen. At the evening service their pianist and the church organist, Evelyn Curts, teamed up to render many of the favorite hymns of the congregation. Personals Craig Holden of Burlington and Keith Walper of Toronto spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Walper, Douglas, Joanne and Elizabeth. Mrs. Hugh Adair and Kim Anne and Evelyn and Manuel Curts were among those who enjoyed a chartered bus trip to the Science Centre, Toronto, last Wednesday. Mr. & Mrs. Stewart Brown, newlyweds, were the honored guests at a euchre and presen- tation, Saturday evening in the Corbett Community Centre.
