Repeat theme of 50 years ago
as Centralia marks church union
By MRS. FRED BOWDEN
CENTRALIA
Sunday was another
memorable day in the life of the
Centralia United Church when a
large congregation including a
number of former members and
visitors attended the service
commemorating 50 years of
church union,
The theme of the service
"There shall be one fold and one
shepherd"used fifty years ago
when the Centralia and Frazer
congregations united to become
members of the United Church of
Canada, was repeated this year,
Mrs, Sheridan Revington,
acting as a Presbyterian
representative and Mr. Cecil
Skinner as a, Methodist
representative, took part in the
service.
Mrs. W. R. Essery and Mrs,
Robert Blair led in the worship
service. Mrs. Lorne Hicks, who
was the local school teacher at
the time of union, was the
speaker and in her usual
inimitable manner, held her
listeners in rapt attention as she
recalled memories of fifty years
ago. 1925-1926 was not only the
first year of union but it was this
year that saw the burning of the
mortgage on the present church.
After a period of reminiscing
Mrs. Hicks dealt with her topic
for the morning "Satisfaction,
Happiness and Contentment."
The dictionary has defined the
three words as follows,

Satisfaction - anything that
brings gratification, pleasure or
contentment, Happiness that
which brings pleasure, joy or
contentment, Contentment - the
state, quality or fact of being
satisfied.
There is a tremendous
satisfaction in knowing that our
Christian guidelines and senses
of value do not change. In Peter 1-
25 we read 'But the word of the
Lord endureth forever, it shall
pass away."
There is the satisfaction of
Generosity "The Lord loves a
cheerful giver," To be well
grounded in Faith is pretty close
to the top in the list of personal
satisfaction. Satisfaction comes
from using the skills and
materials that we have. Dorcas
had a needle, Paul and Silas had
a song in prison. Jesus had 5
loaves and 2 fishes. Satisfaction
comes in using what we've got - it
is the quality not the quantity that
counts,
Coming together is a begin-
ning, keeping together is
progress and worshipping
together is happiness, Probably
no one ever had more trials or
tribulations than Paul and yet it
was he who said "I have learned
in whatsoever state I am in,
therein to be content." The
speaker concluded by saying
"What do we want for the next 50
years?. A reason to live, a creed
to believe and a song to sing."
The special music for the
service was provided by the Jolly
J's of London who delighted their
listeners with the various
musical numbers. Ushers were
Mrs. Ralph Lightfoot, Mrs. Sam
Skinner, Mrs. Chas. Hollings and
Mrs. Earl Haist,
The service was followed by a
pot luck dinner and a time of
fellowship in the church
schoolrooms.
Much credit for the success of
the service is due the United
Church Women who arranged the
service.

As an active member of our church Women's league
we have like most people recently been made keenly
aware of the plight of thousands of poor little orphans
all over the world. So now our church was considering
getting together and adopting an Indian or Eskimo
child. The problem we have is that none of us have any
idea as to where to begin so can Impact please tell us
how can we go about it?
Impact certainly admires your church ladies good inten-
tions but unfortunately neither we or anyone else can alter the
federal law which states that THE CHILD Welfare act of On-
tario specifies that not more than one person can adapt a
child unless the applicants are husband and wife. The only
suggestion we might make is that perhaps one or more of
your married couples might like to apply on their own. If so
write us again and we'll put you through the right channels.

I am receiving the old age pension and have been a
Canadian resident for more than 40 years. I understand
that a few years ago the Old Age Pension regulations
were changed allowing a person to retire to the country
of his birth. The pension cheques would be mailed there.
Since I plan to go back in a year's time when I am 70
years of age, this is of some concern to me.
Here is the situation if you wish to reside outside Canada
after receiving your Old Age Security Pension.
Canada will pay you the pension for six months if you have
resided in Canada for less than 25 years after your 21st birth-
day. If you have lived in Canada for more than 25 years after
you have reached the age of 21 you are entitled to the pen-
sion forever. You realize that you must be a Canadian resi-
dent for at least 10 years and be at least 65 years of age to
be eligible for the Old Age Pension. Since you have been in
Canada for more than 40 years you can go anywhere in the
world and Canada will send your cheque every month as
long as you live. Advise officials a couple of months before
you leave so they can change your address.

I have thought several times recently of making a will
but being the world's greatest procrastinator have kept
putting it off, however my brother recently died very
suddenly without one so now I'm ready to make mine.
I've thought of saving some money and making my
will on one of those forms they sell at the stationery
store. Are there any particular formalities about signing
it and so forth?
We wouldn't advise anyone, to use one of these home-
made wills. They are worded in general language, and you
may not end up making the dispositions of your property you
would have wished,
However, if you insist, the requirements are these: A will
must be in writing. It must be signed by the testator (that is,
the person whose will it is) or by someone else for him, and at
his request, And the signature must be made in the presence
of at least Iwo attesting witnesses, who must also sign.
Readers are reminded that ALL letters addressed to this
column will receive a personal reply, provided you
enclose a STAMPED, ADDRESSED ENVELOPE.
