FOR ALL. GQQD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Well
deserved
One of the important awards at the recent Exeter
Hawks junior banquet didn't go to a player but to a man of
many hats in the local sports field.
Ron Horn, president of the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association presented a plaque to Exeter's Mr. Hockey,
Derry Boyle for his dedication to hockey teams of all ages
over the past 31 years.
While the award was made on behalf of hockey, Derry
has given much of his spare time since 1944 to baseball as
well as hockey.
Through Derry's efforts minor hockey started in Ex-
eter in the mid-1940's on a very small scale with midget and
juvenile teams sponsored by the Lions club.
In the early days, he was solely responsible for getting
many of the local minor baseball teams organized and kept
them going by managing, umpiring and getting the diamond
ready for play,
Back to hockey, Boyle coached Exeter teams in the old
cyclone league back in the early 1950's when rivalry was
high among area teams including Dashwood, Zurich, Lucan
and Hensall,
In recent years he has been the most loyal Exeter
hockey fan regardless of the category of play or where the
games were played.
This loyalty was at its highest when the Hawks reached
the Ontario junior finals two years in succession against
Haliburton and Bancroft,
Derry and his wife Edith were usually the first to arrive
on the long weekend trips to the north and east of Ontario.
The same things applied when the Legion Auxiliary pee
wees won the provincial championship during the 1972-73
and again this past season when basically the same boys as
bantams sponsored by the Legion brought another title
home.
We feel very safe in suggesting Derry has travelled
many more miles at his own expense than any hockey sup-
porter anywhere, Be it OMHA playoffs or tournaments in
Brampton, Hespeler, Goderich, Georgetown, etc. Derry
was there.
Probably one of the most important aspects of Derry's
contribution to minor sports is the fact he was assisting in
many ways both before and after his two sons, Frank and
Rick were involved.
The recent award was certainly well deserved, We
know that as long as it is physically possible, Exeter hockey
teams will have an ardent supporter in Derry Boyle.
Congratulations, Derry, on a lifetime of dedication to
all minor sports and young people in general.
Year of the upsets
While the complete record of one of the greatest
Cinderella teams of all time is not known when this is being
written the performance of the New York Islanders is
literally unbelievable.
In a recent issue of the Hockey News, it reported the
odds on various teams to win the Stanley Cup. The well-
known oddsmaker Jimmy the Greek listed the Montreal
Canadiens at 2-1, Philadelphia 5-2 and Buffalo 6-1.
Jimmy listed the Vancouver Canucks at 40-1 and ap-
parently failed to rate the Islanders at all. Probably would
have reached a thousand to one.
The performance of the Islanders to date proves that
any team with the proper desire and will to win can over-
come a lot of diversities.
The odds offered by Jimmy the Greek on NHL games
are based on information provided by Herb Goren, former
publicist of the New York Rangers.
