"The best in service when you need it most!"
Hensall ratepayers are getting
a tax break this year but in
setting the 1975 levy Monday
night, Hensall town council
forecast an increase in 1976.
The 1975 rate, 79,77 mills
residential public school and
91.26 mills for commercial public
school, compares favourably
with the 1974 rate of 79 mills
residential.
Separate school supporters will
pay 84.27 mills residential and
96.26 mills commercial compared
to 84.5 and 97.4 mills in 1974.
Since education costs continue
to climb and sewers and storm
drains will be installed as soon as
approval can be received, council
indicated that the 1976 mill rate
would likely increase sub-
stantially.
Building permits were granted
to John Petty for a sidewalk
leading. to his residence and to
Don Stebbins for a entranceway
at the rear of his home. Other
permits went to Horton
McDougall for a 10 by 22 foot
carport, to Sam Rennie for roof
replacement, to Mrs. E.Riley for
a barn roof replacement and to
W. G. Thompson and Son for a 25
by 55 foot addition on the east side
of its existing officio building.
Glen Harburn reported
problems with water in his
basement. Council said B. M.
Ross, an engineering firm from
Goderich, was working on a
drainage report. They did make
it clear that surface water would
not be carried in sanitary sewers.
New storm sewers may be in-
stalled in the future.
Fire Chief Dave Sangster
reported on the activities of the
department and also on the extra
work completed due to flooding.
A statement for extra services
such as flushing drains and
pumping water was approved by
council,
Council also 'approved the
purchase of an Akron hydrant
valve, two 50 foot lengths of 21/2
inch base hose and a "D'oxygen
cylinder for the fire department,
Council asked clerk Earl
Shapter to contact Tuckersmith
township regarding the washout
of a dyke into a catch basin.
Council is concerned about the
gravel in the catch basin.
Councillor Harold Knight
reported that a recent
Ontario Municipal Board
directive would make it difficult
to borrow money for renovations
to the arena, The parks board
intends to bring the roof up to
provincial standards and place a
wall between the ice surface and
the lobby rather than do the
extensive renovations previously
planned,
Road superintendent Ernest
Davis reported that a drain had
been broken at Stan Kochin's
property. A tree which had been
hit by a car has been removed.
Grading has been done and cold
mix placed in holes on the town
streets. The streets have also
been swept.
Murray Baker reported that
measurements showed the
sidewalk at Ed. Little's property
is three inches higher than the
crown of the road. It was decided
to dig holes near the Buchanan
and Duffy properties to deter-
mine if the drain is working
properly.
The purchase of new furniture
for the clerk's office was
discussed. Council will attend the
meeting of the Hurori County
Municipal Officers Association in
Bayfield May 14. The clerk was
authorized to attend the meeting
of the Clerks and Treasurers
Association at Horseshoe Valley
