Goderich spring racing meet
postponed for two weeks
A propsed 10-day harness
racing spring meet scheduled for
Goderich Raceway Friday has
been postponed until Friday, May
Opening night will be Friday
May 2 with the feature race to
be the $1,000 Feagan Invitational
Pace. The victorious horse and
driver will be greeted in the
winner's circle by George
Feagan, 78 year old elder
statesman, of the famed
Goderich harness racing family.
Feagan, a pioneer of Canadian
Harness Racing, has long
competed as owner, trainer and
driver. His grandson, Ron, is a
renowned international driver-
trainer, In 1965 Ron was runner
up to Petra Burka as Canadian
Athlete of the Year and third in
'the United States Driving
Championship. His purse ear-
nings surpassed the four million
dollar mark on September 24,
1974.
Ron's father Keith who died
suddenly this past winter of a
heart attack was also active as an
owner, trainer and driver and
managed the family's main
farm. Ben Feagan, another of
George's sons is, in the family
tradition, an owner-trainer of
standardbreds. Ron's brother
Gary has succeeded, his father
Keith as manager of the main
farm,
A raceway spokesman termed
the Feagan Invitational Pace the
only feature truly fitting to
commence a Goderich racing
season.
An innovation of the spring
Meet will be the use of big screen
closed circuit TV within the
Goderich arena which is situated
adjacent to the Raceway's home
stretch. The pari-mutuel
operation will be in the arena,
Racing Secretary Don Masse-
has assembled a fine field for the
Feagan Invitational including
early entries Hooky Tonk, Romeo
Lobel] and Local Boy,
Masse reports area horsemen
have responded not only to the
Feagan opening day feature but
to the entire Spring Meet at
Goderich. "It's a great idea,"
Masse stated. "It really 'fills a
hole in race scheduling for both
patrons and horsemen in Western
Ontario. We're running it as a
test meet but I'm confident it's
going to lead to an extensive race
season here in Goderich,"
The Bluewatet Spring meet
will be followed by the
established Dungannon Summer
meet at Goderich Raceway on
nine consecutive Fridays com-
mencing July 4 through August
29.
The spring meet opening night
festivities will begin at 7;30 p.m.
with post time for the first race
set for 7:45, The 7:45 post time
will prevail throughout the four
Fridays and six Tuesdays of the
meet.
There will be ten races nightly
with exactor wagering on all ten
races.

Driving to Mexico in a new
car? No trouble finding lead-
free gas, according to Pemex
officials. Look for a platinum
grey pump and the words
"Unleaded -92 Sin Nome.
A rubber company suggests
we change cars' belts and
hoses every two years instead
of 24,000 miles. Seems that
though people may be driving
less, rubber products
deteriorate with time.
Recent survey indicates that
drivers, especially young ones,
are turning to cars with
manual transmissions -
because they're more fun to
drive. We're old enough to
remember when they were
condicered a nuisance.
