Student visits Cuba Brenda Neil was a member of the group of eight high school students who spent a week on the island of Cuba. They flew to Cuba by Air Canada, non-stop from Toronto, reaching the island at 1;30 a.m. There were police in evidence everywhere but the tourists suffered no restriction. The climate was warm, the breezes from the ocean balmy. A language difference proved to be no problem, There were many people who spoke no English, giving the group opportunity to practise their high school Spanish. Food was abundant and of excellent quality. Brenda noticed that in the Havana shops all souvenirs were marked "Made in Cuba". The party took a 40-mile boat trip to an Indian village where there were curious statues, and to a crocodile farm of 35,000 crocodiles, with a projected capacity of 50,000 at which point slaughter and sale could begin, Personals Ross Krueger is a patient at University Hospital, London. Those in use are the smaller measures, such as centimeters and metres for length, cubic centimeters for volumes, and kilograms for weights. Tem- peratures are measured in degrees of Celcius. Mrs. English also agreed many people use metric systems without knowing it. One example she mentioned was the 24-hour clock. She said it has been used in transporation systems for years, such as in airline and train schedules. The system of the 24- Immunization care needs shot in arm Officials are worried. Parents are lax. Not enough children are being immunized against con- tagious diseases. Without the proper protection, epidemics can sweep like fire through dry tinder, Ten years ago, 85 percent of children in the one-to-four age group received all three doses of the polio vaccine. By 1973, the figure had dropped to 60 percent. Waiting until they're in school may be too late for some, as we remember when polio was known as infantile paralysis. The preschoolers• areimostvulnerable, so we really must reach them. The percentage of young children' being immunized against measles, rubella, mumps, diptheria, tetanus, and other diseases is falling off. So are rates for vaccination against whooping cough, another serious threat to youngsters. Tuberculosis tends to be forgotten in the crush. Anyone including children, can have TB without knowing it and be spreading it to others. Everyone should have a tuberculin skin test at least once. If a child or adult is infected with TB germs but does not have disease, the doctor can prescribe special pills to prevent disease from developing. If disease is already present, pills can cure it. The care and protection of children is out of their hands. It depends on concerned parents and health professionals. Being sure the proper precautions are taken against contagious disease is essential. To find out more about ways to prevent diseases like TB, contact your Christmas Seal Association. It's a matter of life and breath. Po Fashion Boutique LADIES' & MISSES' NOW OPEN Daily including Sundays MOO a.m. to 6:00 p.m. GRAND BEND 1 3/4 miles south of traffic lights on Highway 21 By MRS. Director of nursing Charlanne English RN, said the metric system has been in most hospitals since about 1969. However neither she nor ad- ministrator Elmer Taylor knew just how long the system has been used at SHH. Mrs. English agreed that the staff of the hospital will have an advantage over the rest of us when it comes to converting to metric, since they have been doing it for years. Despite the fact that SHH does use the metric system, it is used only in a limited way, said Mrs. English.
