By Ross Haugh Finals again For the second time in three years, an Exeter minor hockey team has reached the finals in Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs and most of the same youngsters are involved. The Exeter bantams will be meeting Picton in a best-of- seven series for the provincial championship. The local club is basically the :.jame as the team which won the pee wee crown in the 1972-73 season. The first two games of the series will be here in Exeter this coming weekend. The first contest goes at the Exeter arena Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. with the second slated for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The locals will travel to Picton, a distance of about 285 miles the following weekend for another two games. A toss of the coin will be made prior to Saturday's opening game to decide the location of any further games if they become necessary. Coach Ron Bogrt and manager Bob Pooley have put together a strong club and they should give a good account of themselves against Picton. Bogart has been alternating his two goal tenders Ted Triebner and Paul Gaiser and both youngsters have been turning in excellent performances. In most games one goalie plays the first and third periods and overtime if needed and the other handles the second period and then starts the next game. The Exeter defensive corps is big and should stand up as far as size is concerned with any team of bantams in the province and the forwards are fast and shifty. We would like to wish the locals the best of luck in the finals and hope they repeat their championship triumph of two years ago. We dropped into the arena Monday morning and a good number of the bantams were out for an unofficial practice using a soft rubber puck and showing plenty of enthusiasm. Coach Ron Bogart has lined up two practices and an ex- hibition game this week and the boys should be in good shape for their encounters with Picton, A warming thought While winter has been hanging around much longer than most of us would like it's probably warming a bit to think of the coming summer season and a variety of spor- ting activities. Western Ontario fishermen have less than a month to wait for the 1975 angling season to open locally. It will be legal to fish for trout beginning, Saturday, April 26. Good luck, fellows. A fund raising project Members of three newly formed athletic groups in the area are currently selling tickets on a raffle lottery and stag to raise monies for a new mat to be placed at South Huron District High School. The South Huron Wrestling Association made up mostly of former members of the school wrestling teams are work- .with the Exeter and district Gymnastic Association and the Exeter and district judo club. The new mat when purchased will also be used for high school activities and SHDHS is contributing to the cost. The stag and lottery will be held on Friday, April 25 at the Exeter arena. The three clubs involved in the project are affiliated with Exeter's RAP committee. Friendly rivalry The Exeter Legion hall was the scene for a friendly sports night recently when members of the Exeter fire department were guests of the Legion. A variety of games including billiards, cribbage, shuffleboard and darts kept visitors and hosts occupied. Legion fun night chairman Doug Brintnell presented the challenge trophy to fire chief Gary Middleton and Don Wells. Another night of similar recreational activity for mixed participation is planned for the Legion Saturday night of this week. Huron Park skating carnival Officials of the Huron Park figure skating club are busily engaged making final preparations for their up- coming carnival. It is the first time, the Huron Park club has attempted to present a carnival and from reports we have heard it will be a very interesting and colorful event. In order to cut down on expenditures, all costumes are being designed and made by parents of the youngsters par- ticipating. The show is called, "Forest Fantasy" and will be held at the Huron Park arena on Wednesday, April g at 7:30 p.m. Included in the show will be two guest skaters from the Exeter figure skating club, Laurie Prout and Kim Black. Planning summer program Exeter's rec director Jim McKinlay is busy these days lining up an extensive recreation program for youngsters of Exeter and district. McKinlay in his first full year expects to hive an ex- panded playground program with activities at Exeter Com- munity park and Victoria park in addition to a full swim- ming pool program. In a little over a month, roller skating will get un- derway at the arena. Started on a small scale last fall, roller skating proved to be very popular and this summer's program will probably go four nights a week. McKinlay expects to have three nights of skating during the week for youngsters and one night on the weekend for adults. Roller hockey will likely be tried on a very small scale and the game of lacrosse may be given a try. In order to play lacrosse at the arena it would be necessary to place screening above the boards to keep the ball from continual- ly going out of bounds. Everything is in readiness for Sunday's ringette clinic at the Exeter public school and arena. Invitations have been sent to all schools in the area. Ringette is a game on ice for girls using a rubber ring instead of a puck, Officials and players from Waterloo will be in attendance to demonstrate the game. The Waterloo Belles, Ontario Winter Games Champs will be here Sunday and will play an exhibition game at the Exeter arena at 1:15 p,m. This game will be followed at 2 o'clock by the Exeter bantams. Here is a chance for spectators to drop into the arena a little early and catch a glimpse of ringette. The Exeter Waxers picked up their third trophy of the season when they won the "B" cham- pionship at the annual Dor- chester tournament Saturday. It was the second consecutive year the club had won the trophy. Earlier in this season, the Waxers won the "C" consolation trophy in the Exeter novice tournament and two weeks ago they skated off with the "A" Bantams set for finals The Exeter bantams swing back into action this weekend as they continue their quest of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association bantam "B" championship. After losing the first game of a best-of-five series Picton bounced hack to eliminate Bracebridge in the next three games and will be in Exeter Saturday and Sunday for two games. The first game goes at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night and face-off time for the second contest is Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Exeter youngsters will return to Picton the following weekend for similar Saturday and Sunday contests. The series will he of the four-out-of-seven varlet y. A flip of the coin will be made before Saturday's first game begins to decide the location of a firth game if it becomes necessary. In other playoff' series flips so far this year Exeter manager Bob Pooley has yet to come up a loser. Along the playoff trail, the local bantams have eliminated four teams and in so doing won 12 games while losing only two games and gaining the same number of ties. OMHA playoffs for the Exeter club started with a three game sweep of Byron. Next came Strathroy and the locals won three games while losing one and tying another. Amherstburg was next with the same result, The locals took the best-of-five series three games to one with one tie A three game sweep of Delhi allowed the Ron Bogart coached club to advance to the final round and the right to meet Picton. The decisive wins in semi-final play surprised the Delhi club and its supporter's. In a tournament in Lucan earlier in the season Delhi blanked Exeter 0-0. silverware in the Grand Bend tournament. The Exeter youngsters had to go into the second period of sudden death overtime before winning Saturday's contest with fluron East to regain their trophy. At the 3:12 mark of that second session of extra play, captain Steve Batten broke in on the Huron East goalie only to have the latter make an excellent save. However, George Pratt was following up closely on the play and picked up the rebound and fired it into an open net as the netminder was out of the play after making the save on Batten, The win marked the climax of an uphill battle for the local youngsters who had been forced to come from behind on two occasions in the contest to send the game into overtime. Huron East scored early in the game and Steve Batten put Exeter back on even terms when he completed a three-way combination with George Pratt and Brent Dawson. The London suburb took a 2-1 lead with a minuteleft in the first stanza and held it until early in the third period when Batten scored his second goal of the contest, coming out of the corner to tuck the puck into the short side. John Wells and Brent Dawson drew assists on that play. Exeter gained the right to the final with a 3-0 win over Dor- chester in their second game. George Pratt paced the win with two goals and an assist. He and Steve Batten picked up assists on the first goal scored by Darren Vandergunst and then Pratt came back in the second period to score an unassisted effort and then the clincher with the help of John Wells. Rick Gilfillan played a strong game between the pipes to earn the shutout. In their opening game of the tournament, Exeter dropped a close 2-1 decision to Mt. Brydges. The winners scored early in the contest hut Exeter knotted the count early in the second period when Sean Whiteford raced in all alone to put the puck over the shoulder of the Mt. Brydges goalt ender. Then. with only one second left on the clock, Mt. Brydges scored the winner when Andrew McLean picked up a loose puck at the side of the Exeter net and rifled it past Gilfillan. The Exeter goalie had made a glove save on the original shot, but wasn't able to recover in time The Exeter Broncos won three games and scored a total of 19 goals but failed to win any championships in the weekend South London atom tourney. The Broncos and Delhi each won three times in the "B" division and Niagara-on-the-lake and Saltfleet won the same number of times in the "A" category. The one team in each division with the fewest goals against qualified for the cham- pionship round. Delhi was eligible for "B" teams because of only four goals against while the Broncos gave up seven despite the fact Exeter scored 19 times to only 10 for Delhi. The same situation existed in the "A" division where Saltfleet chalked up a record of 23.5 but were beaten by Niagara-on-the- lake with 10-3. The Broncos defeated Thornhill 5-2 in the opener, downed Paris 4- 2 and scored a decisive 10-3 victory over Napanee in the final contest. Scott Pincombe and Mike Clark each scored two goals to lead the Exeter win over Thornhill. David Underwood added the odd counter, John Kernick• assisted on Pincombe's first marker and David Underwood and Bill Glover helped on the second. David Underwood assisted on Clark's first successful shot and Scott Batten provided the pass on the other, Batten and Clark teamed up to set up Underwood's counter. Most of the scoring in the Broncos 4-2 victory over Paris came in the last three minutes of the game. The first period was scoreless and each team counted once in the middle frame. Scott Broncos win three - but, fail to win trophy to block the rebound. However, the Exeter youngsters would have been declared losers in the game if it had ended in a tie, because the team scoring the first goal of the game was awarded the win in draw situations. Exeter's :3.0 win over Dor- chester was the only game of the Batten converted a pass from David Shaw for the Exeter marker. David Underwood shot the Exeter club into a 2-1 lead with only two minutes and 51 seconds left only to have Paris get even again with a minute remaining. Scott Pincombe on a pass from Bill Glover hit the mark with 29 seconds left and David Shaw ensured the victory with an empty net goal with six seconds left. The Exeter scoring was well spread in the closing win over Napanee with three goals each in the first two periods and four in the final frame. Captain Bill Glover, John Kernick and Scott Pincombe were the opening frame marksmen with assists going to David Underwood, David Shaw, Mark Vandergunst and Pin- combe, In the middle stanza, David Shaw and Mike Clark hit on unassisted efforts and David Underwood connected on a three- way effort with Mike Clark and Tom Coates. David Underwood scored two goals in the third period and Mark Vandergunst and Bill Glover fired singles. Assists went to Coates, Glover and Clark. This was the third instance this year when the, Broncos turned in excellent performances and failed to bring home any silverware. In the Silver Stick tourney at Forest early in the year the Exeter youngster's won the "B" title and after eliminating the "C" winner lost to the "D" champ when they were forced to play two consecutive games. They were eliminated in recent Shamrock playoffs on a goals for and against basis. entire eight-game tournament that was not decided by a single goal. Two games ended in ties, while all other contests were by one-goal margins. Both cham- pionship games went into the second period of overtime before winners were declared, Belmont won the "A" cham- pionship.
