After winning the first game by a 6-4 score Friday on home ice in Ilderton the Jets were dropped 5- 2 in New Hamburg Sunday. The third game of the best-of- seven series was played in Ilderton last night, Wednesday. The fourth will be in New Hamburg Sunday at 7.30 p.m. and the fifth back in Ilderton Friday, March 21 at 8.30 p.m. In other playoff sets the Stratford Perths and Durham Huskies are tied at a game apiece as are the London Kings and Preston Jesters. A poor start The Jets got off to a disastrous start Sunday in New Hamburg finding themselves two goals down after only 45 seconds of play. Loose defensive play by the Jets allowed Tom Pierson of New Hamburg to score at the five second mark and he made it 2-0 only 40 seconds later. At 5,48 of the initial period Bob Zehr put his team three goals ahead as he put the puck behind Lorne Daer in the L-I net, The Jets battled back from this deficit with two successful shots before the first period ended but that's all they were able to get in the rest of the game, Jacques Cousineau started the Lucan-Ilderton scoring at 15.05 when he was able to deflect a shot from Jeff Craig into the opposing net. With only four seconds remaining in the period Rick Fifield finished off a three-way effort with Barry Baynham and Jack Nairn on a Jets power 'play. GB group plan tourney Eight teams will be par- ticipating this weekend in a novice hockey tournament at the Zurich arena sponsored by the Grand Bend Minor Hockey Association. Two teams from Exeter along with single entries from Goderich, Bayfield, Zurich, Huron Park, Thedford and Grand Bend will compete for two trophies. The tourney starts Friday night at the Zurich arena at 6 p.m. with Grand Bend meeting Exeter I and Thedford and Huron Park meeting an hour later. Saturday play begins at 2 p.m. with Bayfield tangling with Zurich and Goderich meeting Exeter II at 3 p.m. Losers of the two Friday games will meet at 4 p.m. and the winners of the same games will do battle at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m. the losers of the first two Saturday games meet and the two winners get together at 7 p.m. Saturday at 12 noon the winners of games five and seven will meet for the "A" championship and at 1 p.m. the "B" final will be played between the winners of games six and eight. In the second period, Daryl Graham and Roger Kropf upped the New Hamburg goal total to five. Kropf's score came as an attempted Jets power play back- fired. The third period was scoreless. Behind early The early pattern of Friday's game in Ilderton was similar with New Hamburg taking an early lead but this time the Jets were able to rebound and pull out the victory in the third period. The game was only two minutes old when Dave Scherer put the Screaming Eagles ahead 1-0. At 7.54 Jeff Craig hit the mark for the first time for the Jets as he moved in from the blueline. Assists on the play went to Larry Haugh and Jacques Cousineau. Don Culbert put the visitors a- head again with less than two minutes left in the opening session. At 11.22 of the middle period Daryl Graham gave the New Hamburg club a 3-1 lead. The Jets were quick to react to this deficit and were back on even terms by the end of 40 minutes of play. Jacques Cousineau found himself loose in front of the New Hamburg net at 13.01 and was able to convert a pass from Jeff Craig. With 27 seconds left in the period, Pete Loveless evened the score at 3-3 on a power play started by Jeff Craig and Jack Nairn. Dick Doughty gave the Jets'the lead for the first time at 3.56 of the third period on a pass from Rick Fifield but Ken Bast squared matters again at 10.53. Exactly seven minutes later Jim Blake registered the even- tual winning goal on a three-way effort with Rick Fifield and Barry Baynham. The goal came on another Jets power play. New Hamburg pulled their goalie in the last minute to get the tying goal but the move backfired and Jets playing coach Jack Nairn was able to score into the empty net to put the victory in the bag. Lorne Daer was in goal for the Jets in both playoff games against New Hamburg. The other net minder Sonny Pennington is recovering from recent injuries. Atom team defeats HP At the Huron Park Arena, Saturday, the Exeter Atom "B" club edged Huron Park 3-2. The Exeter club took a 3-0 lead by the three minute mark of the third period and were forced to hang on as Huron Park came on strong in the dying moments. Scott Brintnell and Brent Atthill scored on unassisted ef- forts for Exeter and Jonathan Melhuish registered on a pass from Brintnell, Steve Morrissey and Steve O'Neill were the marksmen for Huron Park with assists going to David Murray and. John Insley. Win .four of six Exeter teams won four of six games played over the weekend with minor hockey clubs from Trenton Michigan. The Exeter Broncos broke even with Trenton in atom play, winning 6-3 after the Michigan club took the Saturday opener by the same score. The two pee wee clubs split a pair of contests with Exeter winning a 3-2 Saturday and Trenton rebounding to win 6-5 Sunday, The Exeter juveniles won both games over Trenton to give the local teams the edge in the series. The juvenile wins were by scores of 5-0 and 4-3. In Saturday's atom game, Trenton scored three times in the first period and the Broncos were never able to recover. Chad Kalaska scored twice for Trenton in the first period, and John Drabczyk notched a single, In the second period, Mark Vandergunst put the Broncos on the scoreboard for the first time converting a pass from Scott Pincombe, Before the period was over Torn Coates hit on a pass from David Underwood for Exeter and John Drabczyk and Rick Doss replied for Trenton, In the final frame, Scott Pin- combe completed the Bronco counting on a three-way effort with Mark Vandergunst and John Kernick. The last Trenton marksman was Drabczyk to complete his hat trick. Sunday's contest was the exact reverse with the Exeter club moving in front quickly by a score of 4-0 midway through the second period before the visitors hit the net. Bill Glover and Mike Clark each scored two goals in the first Bronco uprising and Scott Batten and Scott Pincombe helped Clark, Chad Kalaska scored two goals in 13 seconds for Trenton before David Underwood and Mike Clark gave the Broncos their four goal margin back. John Drabc- zyk was the final marksman for the visitors, Scoring was well spread in Saturday's Exeter juvenile win over Trenton. Getting one goal each were Brion Penhale Ken Pinder, Tom Richardson, Mike Desjardine and John Van Ger- wen. Randy Regier picked up two assists and Ken Pinder, Gary Jennison and Tom Richardson each helped on one score. Scoring in Sunday's game was limited to the last half of the 'game.Each team scored twice in the second period and Exeter outscored the visitors two goals to one in the final session. Again Exeter goals came in single fashion. This time the marksmen were Brion Penhale, Fred Campbell, Larry Clarke and Phil Knight. Ken Pinder Rec league in playoffs In the first round of playoffs in the Exeter and district Rec hockey league, Newby Tire downed Usborne township 6-3 and Les Pines edged the North Stars 9-7. The same teams meet again tonight, Thursday in the second game similar best-of-three series. Jim Jordan found the mark with two successful shots to lead the Newby scoring attack, Adding one goal apiece were Mark Hookey, Craig Webbr and Bob Jones. Scoring in single fashion for Usborne were Larry Johns, Ray Mills and Larry Skinner, Ron Rowe and Dan McIver each scored twice to head up the Les Pines scoring attack. Getting one goal each were Paul Mason, Marty Overholt, Tan McCallum, Ron Moore and Rick McDonald. John Hayman and Al Knight both fired two goals for the North Stars and Case Zeehuisen added the odd counter. assisted on two scores and Tom Richardson and Randy Regier nabbed one assist each. The Trenton goal getters were Paul Settler, Chuck Gores and Cal Issbehardt. Saturday's Exeter pee wee victory •came on a goal by Dave Bell with about six minutes remaining in the third period. Wayne Parsons and Doug Brooks assisted. Captain Jeff Fuller scored the first Exeter marker on a pass from Rick Lindenfield and Wayne Parsons hit the mark with passing help from Brooks. The Trenton goals were fired by Gary Abate and Phil Partlan. Trenton took a 3-2 lead after the first period of play in Sunday's contestand were able to hold the one goal margin to the final whistle, Gary Agate was the top Trenton scorer with a two goal effort and singles were added by Sam Molin, James Mans, Jeff Baker and John O'Brien. Doug Brooks was tops for Exeter in the scoring department with two successful shots. Ed Willis, Wayne Parsons and Larry Dawson notchedone goal apiece. Wayne Parsons was the top point getter adding three assists. Huron Park wins In house league In pee wee house league action, Saturday, Huron Park downed Exeter by a score of 6-3. Eddie De Vries went on a scoring spree with four goals to lead the Huron Park attack. Jim Harvey and Randy Insley fired one successful shot apiece. Brad Coates with a two goal effort was hest for Exeter and Kevin Glasgow added the odd counter.
