Stamina paid off for the Exeter
Hawks Sunday night as they
downed the Exeter juveniles 10-3
in the first game of a best-of-five
exhibition series.
The Hawks scored six times in
the third period to add to a 4-1
second period margin. During
some of their regular Shamrock
league games,, the juveniles have
been playing as little as 35
minutes as compared to a full N
minutes in all Hawks contests.
The second game of the series
is set for the Exeter arena,
Sunday night at 8.30 p.m. with the
third contest slated for the
following Sunday at the same
time.
The first period was scoreless
as Randy Lovie of the Hawks and
juvenile goalie John Gould kept
the slate clean.
With close to three minutes
elapsed in the second period,
Gord Pryde put the Hawks on the
scoreboard as he completed a
three-way effort with Kevin
Bestard and Gerald Weido.
At the 6.50 minute mark the
Hawks were two goals up on Bill
Van Bergen's successful shot on
passes from Brian Taylor and
Rick Ingram.
The first juvenile marker came
at the 13 minute (nark of the
second session as Kiln McKinnon
hit the mark on a play originated
by Fred. Campbell and Jim
Ferguson.
The Hawks came back with two
goals before the first 40 minutes
of play elapsed. The third and
fourth markers came on identical
plays with Gord Pryde
registering with the assists going
to Gerald VVeido.
With only 51 seconds gone in the
third period, Brian Taylor scored
for the Hawks on an unassisted
effort and he repeated this
performance at the 76.45 mark.
The last two juvenile counters
came near the midway mark of
the final session on successful
shots by Bryon Penhale and Paul
Shapton.
Randy Regier and Ken Pinder
assisted on Penhale's marker
and Shapton's score was set up by
Mike Desjardine and Jim
Ferguson.
In the last 10 minutes the
Hawks hit with four goals to put
the victory away. Rick Ingram
scored twice, both on solo dashes.
Noel Skinner converted a pass
from Steve Schroeder and Gerald
Weido was on the scoreboard on
a three-way passing combination
with Gord Pryde and Rick
Ingram.

Jets win Continental championship

The Lucan-Ilderton Jets
wrapped up the Ontario Hockey
Association Senior Continental
league title Friday night by
downing the New Hamburg
Screaming Eagles 10.5 while the
London Kings were being edged
by the Preston Jesters.
The Jets ended the schedule
with 25 wins and a total of 50
points. The London Kings final
game Tuesday night was can-
celled early in the first period due
to ice failure.
The best the Kings could do
with a win in their last contest
would be a tie with the Jets and
the L-1 club has more victories
and assured of the championship.
In other games during the week
the Kings edged the Jets 4-1
Thursday and the Preston
Jesters scored a 5-3 victory over
Lucan-Ilderton in Preston
Tuesday night.
The playoff rounds start this
week with the first place Jets
selecting the New Hamburg
Screaming Eagles for their first
opposition.
The first game is in Ilderton
Friday night at 8:30 p.m. with the
second in New Hamburg Sunday
at 7:30 p.m. and the third back in
Ilderton, Wednesday March 12 at
8 p.m.
In other playoff action the
London Kings meet Preston and
the Sttatford Perths and Durham
Huskies will do battle.
Lose in third
The Preston Jesters scored two
unanswered goals in the third
period Tuesday to edge the Jets 5-
3.
Pete Loveless, Rick Fifield and
Jacques Cotisineau were the Jets
marksmen. Pete Darcy scored
twice to lead the Jesters and
Randy King, Jim Marks and Ted
Goertzen added singles,
Second period rally
Three goals in the last half of
the second period allowed the
Kings to score their 4-1 Thursday
victory over the Jets.
Dave Gorman opened the
scoring for London at 3.44 of the
first period when two Jets were
resting in the penalty box.
At 3.49 of the second period the
Jets were back on even terms as
Rick Fifield deflected a shot from
Bill Fairbairn into the net. Dick
Doughty also assisted.
Brian Hind scored the actual
winner for the Kings at 9.32 and
when Jim Blake was off for five
minutes, Al Johnston and Dave
Gorman scored for London in a
space of 27 seconds.
50 for Fifield
Against New Hamburg Friday
night Rick Fifield scored two
goals, both in the third period to
run his season total to 50, The old
record was 42.
The first 34 minutes of the
,game was evert with each team
scoring three times, The Jets
fired ,three goals in the last five
minutes of the middle frame and
hit for four more in the third to
take the 10-5 decision.
In the first period, Doug
Galloway scored for the Jets on a
pass from Barry Baynham and
Tom Pierson replied for the
Bantam `B'
club loses
The Exeter bantam 'B' team
are close to elimination in-
shamrock league playoffs. They
were beaten 10-1 by Huron Park
Sunday night after dropping two
contests to Dorchester in a round
robin action,
The only Exeter goal in the
Sunday loss to Huron Park came
from the stick of Dan Preszcator
with three minutes left to play,
Mark Cronyn and Perry
Healey each scored three times
to lead the Huron Park scoring
attack. Dave Smith was next in
line with two goals and 'Cliff
Hicks and Ron Kennedy each
fired one successful shot.
In an exhibition game, the
same Exeter bantam club
dropped a 10-2 decision to Zurich.
The Exeter goals 'were fired by
Dave Cann and Danny Bell. Mark
Wragg drew an assist.
Grant Love was the top Zurich
marksman with a five goal
output. Wayne Thiel scored twice
and Paul Haggitt, Ken Oesch and
Tim Smith added singlescores.
Screaming Eagles.
In the first half of the middle
stanza, Dick Doughty and Jeff
Craig were the L-I marksmen
and Don Culbert and Ken Bast
countered for New Hamburg.
Jamie Robb put the Jets ahead
4.3 at 15.24 when he converted a
pass from Rick Fifield with their
club playing a man short.
To finish, off the second period
scoring, Pete Loveless deflected
a shot from Bill Fairbairn into
the NH net and Jim Blake
registered with passing help from
Jacques Cousineau and Jamie
Robb.
Fifield scored two unassisted.
markers in the final 20 minutes of
play and Jack Nairn and Jeff
Craig hit with successful shots.
Bob Ruthig completed the New
Hamburg scoring.

Wins ribbon
in judo action
Members of the Exeter judo
club have been faring well in
recent competitions. Mark
Pridham a grade nine student 'at
South Huron District High School
placed second in an East Toronto
tournament in February.
Mark competed in the novice
class for boys weighing 130
pounds or less. He has his orange
belt.
Also placing recently in
another tourney was Bill Dutt-
mann of Hensall. The judo club is
in action at SHDHS each Thur-
sday night with instructor Lee
Browning in charge.

Angels lead
is four points
With six weeks to go in the
regular schedule the Dark Angels
lead the Exeter Legion mixed
dart league with 82 points and a
four point margin over the second
place Itchy Niters,

The

The Exeter Broncos were
victorious in their first start in
Shamrock league playoffs. The
Broncos blanked St. Marys 3-0.
St. Thomas is the other club
in the round robin play offs.
Dates have not been set for
future games.
Dave Shaw led the Exeter
marksmen with a two goal effort
while Mark Vandergunst notched
the odd counter.
In the dying moments of the
game, St. Marys put six forwards
to the attack in an attempt to get 1
closer,
A St. Marys player hit the puck
with a thrown stick as it was
heading for the net but the of-
ficials failed to award a goal to
the Exeter team
