Playoff
time
The 1974-75 hockey season is quickly coming to a close
for a lot of area hockey teams as most are now engaged in
playoffs.
The Exeter Hawks bowed out of junior competition Fri-
day night but manager Fred Mommersteeg and coach
Terry Bourne are to be commended on a fine season bring-
ing along a good group of youngsters.
With a little bit of luck the Hawks could have been on
even terms with Belmont at two games apiece after
Friday's game instead of losing four straight,
Two of the four games were lost by only one goal and
either one could have been taken by the Hawks with a few
better bounces.
In OMHA playoff action, the Exeter bantams and pee
wees are still in the running and several Huron Park teams
remain in contention.
The Exeter juveniles lest a very close series to St.
Marys in overtime. We understand the juveniles and Hawks
will engage in a best-of-five series in the near future.
The first game is scheduled for the Exeter arena Sun-
day night at 8:30 p.m. The second game will probably be
played the following Sunday.
This promises to be an interesting series. Two
members of the juvenile club were up with the Hawks for
the final game against Belmont and performed very well.
The juvenile-junior games should draw good crowds as
both teams are composed of local players and the rivalry
should become quite intense.
The South Huron intermediate league playoffs started
Sunday and area fans are assured of plenty of interesting
and exciting action.
The Exeter Mohawks are one game down to the Zurich
Flyers in a best-of-seven series and will be trying to get
even when the two clubs meet again Friday night at 8.30
at the Exeter arena.
In the other series, the Shipka Colonials, defending
league champions go against Centralia College.
The good old days
Thanks to Wally Burton of town we have a copy of the
February 12 issue of the Renfrew Mercury. This particular
issue describes the contribution of Renfrew hockey history.
Although most of the information is based on Renfrew
hockey activities we feel some is intefesting to pass on to
sports fans anywhere.
It was sort of a coincidence getting a call from Wally
Monday after saying he had an interesting hockey article
from Renfrew for us. We had just returned Sunday from a
three day visit in Killaloe which is only about 40 miles from
Renfrew.
The Renfrew team of the 1909-10 series was filled with
stars including six that eventually made Canada's Hockey
Hall of Fame.
These itkeiuded Lester and Frank Patrick, Cyclone Taylor
Newsy ,Lalonde and Bert Lindsay, father of former Detroit
Red Wing star Ted Lindsay.
The Renfrew team was first called the Creamery Kings
because of one of the largest creameries in North America
at that time. The name was later changed to the
Millionaires for obvious reasons.
Some of the battles for players back in the early 1900's
didn't involve the kind of money players received in recent
years for jumping from the NHL to the WHA but were just
as interesting.
In 1909 Renfrew persuaded Lester and Frank Patrick to
come east and they each received three thousand dollars
for the season, the highest salaries ever paid hockey
players up to that time.
The 1910 National Hockey Association season brought in
a new rule placing a limit of five thousand dollars on a
whole team's salary. In those days most teams carried only
eight players so this meant about six hundred dollars for
each player.
With this move players threatened to form a union and
possibly organize a new league. Owners stuck to theirsalary
limits and the Patrick boys remained in the west.
In the two years they were involved in professional
hockey Renfrew did not win the Stanley Cup but they con-
tributed greatly to Canada's hockey history.
This type of small town involvement in major league
sport is something of the past and will probably never be
seen again.
Did you know?
That Billy Reay coach of the ChicagO Black Hawks has
a, very interesting middle name. It's Tulip,
That a goaltender has never scored a goal in National
Hockey league history, Clint Benedict of the old Ottaw"a
Senators who was one of the first goalies to wear a mask
recalls he once scored a goal in an exhibition game but
never did in a regularly scheduled game.
That in 1973-74, Phil Esposito of the Bruins led all NHL
players in shots on goal. He had 393 shots and scored 68
goals for 17.3 percent, an increase from the 13.3 percent he
had last season when he scored 55 goals on 411. shots.

A colorful event
The executive of the Exeter figure skating club are to
be congratulated heartily for their fine carnival presented
in two shows, Saturday.
It was No. 24 as far as carnivals are concerned and was
probably the best ever produced. The costumes in the
"Wonderful World of Disney" were very colorful and the
calibre of skating is improving every year.
Some of the senior members of the Exeter club par-
ticipate in extra skating each summer with the Ilderton
summer figure skating club and this certainly adds to their
abilities.
