To the
carnival
Saturday is one of the biggest and most important days
of the year for members of the Exeter figure skating club.
Two editions of the 21st annual carnival sponsored by
the figure skating club will be shown Saturday. All
members of the club will be seen in at least one number.
The matinee show starts at 2 p.m. and starting time for the
evening performance is 7:30 p.m.
Club president Anne Prout and her very enthusiastic ex-
ecutive have been working hard for many weeks with
professional Brad Loosley in lining up an excellent show.
The show should be very colorful with many characters
familiar to children in particular, It will be called "The
wonderful World of Disney" and will feature fellows like
Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy to name only a few.
To add to the good local talent on display will be an
appearance by Brenda Bridgman and Rick Pettit of the
Preston Figure Skating Club. These two young people plac-
ed second in the Canadian championships in 1974 in the
novice pairs dicision.
The club president tells us another good comedy
number is being prepared by members of the executive. So
all in all it looks like a good show providing entertainment
for all ages and giving parents, relatives and friends a
chance to see their favorite youngsters in action,
Let's get out and support the figure skaters in their
very worth while endeavour. It's the one chance in the year
for the club to gain some revenue to help defray expenses in
operating a large club. The monies received from
registrations go only part way in providing the money
necessary.
More on Sportsmen's Dinner
Back to the recent Exeter Lions Sportsmen's dinner,
one of the youngest looking guests was Mike Jorgensen of
the Montreal Expos. Jorgensen may appear to be very
youthful but he could be the oldest player on the field, ex-
cluding pitchers when the Expos open the 1975 National
baseball league season in less than two months.
Jorgensen at 26 years of age is expected to be a very im-
portant cog in what could be called rebuilding plans by the
Expos.
Over the winter months, the Montreal club traded off
some top notch and expensive talent namely Willie Davis,
Mike Torrez and Ken Singleton. Jorgensen told us the Ex-
pos will be depending on much better pitching and speed to
offset the power hitting traded away.
The acquisition of Dave McNally from Baltimore
should help on the mound. Steve Rogers is expected to come
back with a good season. Also added late in the 1974 season
was Woody Fryman from the Detroit Tigers.
Jorgensen hit .310 for the Expos last year despite the
fact he didn't start a game until June 1. He is known as a
great defensive player going 95 games in 1974 before com-
mitting an error.
Let's open it up
Mike Widger who was one of two members of the
Montreal Alouettes at the local dinner suggested that the
Canadian professional football game needs to be opened up.
Widger, a linebacker with the Grey Cup champs
doesn't look like the usual image of a football player. He is
about five foot nine inches tall and weighs 185 and appears
to be sort of dwarfed beside team-mate Glenn Wier.
Continuing his thoughts on opening up the Canadian
game, Widger said, "we have to make our game more ex-
citing. This could possibly be done by going with four downs
as in the United States. The defence is getting too strong."
The 1974 Grey Cup was a good example of defensive u-
nits being a bit too strong andthe Super Bowl was along the
same lines.
The Montreal linebacker said fans are paying about
eight dollars for a ticket and they want to be entertained.
Another youthful star
Harness racing driver Shelley Goudreau is another
example of making good in the sports field at an early age.
At the age of 26, Shelley has won five driving titles at Wind-
sor Raceway in the last six years.
Last year, his horses won 300 races and he was second
in the battle for driving honours in North America, The
winner was the great Herve Filion of Angers, Quebec.
Shelley is currently training 30 horses at Windsor and
has two in Toronto in addition to about 20 being looked after
by his father Fred at their Dresden training headquarters.
The best horse ever driven by Goudreau is Baron
Gerard. He won with him at Windsor last year in 1.59.4.
While Baron Gerard is claimed to be the best, the young
Dresden horseman went a faster trip at Wolverine in
Detroit with Grover Cat.
