A manager .for the "Big
Mamas" has not ,yet been
determined. Several members of
the EMHA executive are fighting
for the position to help the ladies
on with their equipment.
House league tilt
ends in a draw
The Exeter Hawks continue to
fly high in the Ontario Hockey
Association Western Junior "D"
series and have moved into
fourth place in the league stan-
dings.
The Hawks came up with a
resounding 10-1 win over the
Mitchell Hawks in Mitchell
Tuesday night for their third win
of the week.
They started the week with a
12-3 Wednesday win over the Port
Stanley Lions and continued by
defeating the Strathroy Falcons
10-7 Sunday.
The Hawks are now unbeaten
in their last 10 starts and have
upped their season point total to
27 and a one point lead in fourth
spot over Mitchell.
This week the Hawks play
home and home games with the
Tavistock Braves. The two clubs
meet at the Exeter arena Friday
night and will be back in
Tavistock, Saturday.
In Mitchell Tuesday, the
Hawks improved in a scoring
way as the game progressed.
They scored two goals in the first
period, added three in the second
and fired five more in the last 20
minutes of play,
Brian Taylor, Gord Pryde and
Rick Ingram each scored two
goals to lead the Hawks scoring
a:ttack.•
Getting 'one goal apiece were
Noel Skinner, Matt Muller, Steve
Schroeder and Gerald Weido,
Scoring well spread
In Sunday's 10-7 win over
Strathroy the Hawks scoring was
well spread around with eight
different players sharing in the
goal getting.
After spotting the Falcons a 5-2
lead after the first period of play
the Hawks came on strong to
score four unanswered goals in
the second session and were
never headed although Strathroy
did tie the score early in the third
period.
Matt Muller fired the eventual
winning goal for the Hawks with
in the third period on a pass from
Rick Mommersteeg.
Less than two minutes later
Brian Taylor culminated a three
way passing combination with
Harry Smits and John Beer to
provide the Hawks with an in-
surance goal.
To complete the game and
really ensure the victory John
Beer scored on an unassisted
effort with only 24 seconds left.
In the first period, the Exeter
goal came from Gord Pryde on a
pass from Wayne Regier and
Harry Smits as he finished off a
three-way effort with the help of
Kevin Bestard and Brian Taylor.
The four Hawks stores in the
second period came from the
sticks of Noel Skinner, Brian
Taylor and Gerald Weido and
Rick Mommersteeg.
Rick Ingram and John Beer
each picked up two second period
assists while Gord Pryde and
Matt Muller helped one goal
each.
The Royals were ahead in the
penalty department taking 22 of
the 36 assessments made.
The Hawks showed their
scoring power early in Wed-
nesday's 12-3 victory over Port
Stanley, one of the league's
newest teams.
Five goals in the first period-
followed by a half dozen in--,the
second sessioniprettywell clinched
the Exeter win.
Rick Ingram and Gerald Weido
were the leading scorers for the
Hawks with three goals apiece.
Ingram also added three assists
to take point honours for the
night.
. The game was only five
minutes old when Rick Ingram
started his scoring attack on
passes from Matt Muller and
Rick Mommersteeg,
It took the Port Stanley club
only 11 seconds to get back on
even terms as Larry Lynch
blinked the red light behind the
Exeter net.
In about three minutes near the
halfway mark three Hawks found
the scoring range to pull into a
three goal lead.
Matt Muller converted a pass

The only Exeter marker in the
third period came when Gerald
Weido took a pass from Brian

Port Stanley net. Brian Golem
fired the third and final Port
Stanley marker.
Saturday is the day when every one in Exeter and area
can show their appreciation to the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association officials for the fine job being done in providing
hockey activities for about 200 boys.
It's Minor Hockey Day at the arena and the full 12 game
program will give all boys registered a chance to display
their abilities.
The program for Saturday is outlined elsewhere on
these sports pages,
Executive members of EMHA along with coaches and
managers of all the teams are to be commended for the
many hours they put into the program along with many
dollars spent out of their own pockets.
While it takes a lot of hard work by the executive to
keep an organization such as EMHA going another impor-
tant ingredient is provided by the parents. of the young
hockey players.
The large majority of parents are deeply involved in
attending games and assisting in transportation.
We would like to wish president Ron Horn and his very
capable executive well in Saturday's endeavour and hope
parents, friends and relatives of the boys will respond with
a good attendance.
Admission for the whole day is only one dollar and
spectators may come and go ag they please throughout the
day,
Remember to bring your boy to the arena and then
more important "Stay to See Him Play".
See you at the arena, Saturday.
Recreation in Grand Bend
Recreation activities in the village of Grand Bend and
surrounding area should improve greatly as the result of a
recent move by the summer resort council.
At the inaugural meeting of 1975 steps were taken to
formulate a recreation committee with two representatives
from council and five from the community at large.
One of the new councillors Harold Green was very in-
strumental in pushing for an organization to cover all sport
and recreation activities in the area.
As in many communities sports and hockey in par-
ticular are considered the main recreation, but this is far
from the truth.
Gord Brown who is the 1975 president of the Grand
Bend Minor Sports was at the first meeting and said his
group would be dedicated to help any activity for all age
groups from the very young to the senior citizens.
The newly formed committee is expected to provide op-
portunities for arts, crafts, bridge, euchre, gymnastics to
name only a few to add to hockey, baseball, soccer, swim-
ming and figure skating.
The Grand Bend group has received a lot of help in
preliminary recreation planning from StuBell former rec
director for the City of Stratford.
Bell is now a resident of the Grand Bend area and his
advice and help is bound to be very beneficial especially in,
Pi the planning stages.
Plenty of guidance is also being obtained from Don,
Reid a consultant with the Ontario Ministry of Community
and Social Services.
Council are currently considering the five ap-
pointments to be made from the community and are looking
for suggestions and volunteers. Anyone wishing to serve on
the new board is asked to contact Harold Green or Bill
Baird.
This move to organize recreation is long overdue in
coming and we would like to commend council in their
attempt to improve activities for all ages.
Recreation activities become very important in a time
when shorter working weeks produce much more leisure
time.
A good brand of hockey
One hockey league in the area not getting too much
publicity this year is the South Huron Intermediate hockey
league with teams from Zurich, Centralia College, Shipka
and Jura in addition to the Exeter Mohawks.
These teams turn in an excellent brand of hockey and
fans could do a lot worse than take in some of these games.
We have been carrying reports of most of the Mohawk
games but would also like to keep our readers informed of
the outcome of games involving the other teams.
We would be glad to do this if we could get weekly
reports from the other three area clubs namely the College,
Shipka and Zurich.
The league recently named a new president. He is John
Ainslie of Huron Park who is an enthusiastic booster of the
grouping.
Let's attend the dinner
This may seem to be getting a bit repetitious but we
would like to remind sports fans in the area of the second
annual Exeter Sportsmen's Dinner which is coming up very
soon,
The Exeter Lions club executive has lined up an ex-
cellent array of speakers and their main job now is to sell
the tickets to assure a full house at the Exeter Legion Hall
on Tuesday, February 4.
After last year's successful dinner we thought the Lions
would have a tough job in 1975 in equalling the guest list. We
believe they have arranged a longer and better line-up of
guests than a year ago.
The appearance of Fred Shero, coach of the Stanley Cup
champion Philadelphia Flyers has now been assured, Shero
is bound to be a popular guest. He has to be one of North
America's top authorities on coaching,
By the time a boy reaches the
age of six to eight, he's been the
recipient of a few scoldings and
some spankings from his mother.
Saturday night, a group of
youngsters will get an op-
portunity to gain some measure
of revenge.
The Exeter Waxers will be
tackling their mothers "The Big
Mamas" in one of the feature
games on Exeter's Minor Hockey
Day program which runs from
9:00 a.m. to 9;00 p.m. Saturday.
The "grudge" game between
the six and eight-year-olds and
their mothers is slated for 7:00
p.m.
However, if the youngsters
think they'll have an easy time,
they may be surprised. Playing
coach Shirley Pratt (who also
manages the Waxers) has her
distaff crew in top shape
following secret workouts at the
arena this week.
After the ladies were advised
about the specifics of the game
(such as what is the puck and
what is the stick) they turned in
some bruising workouts.
"We're using the Russian
system of practices," Mrs. Pratt
told the T-A this week, This in-
cludes fancy figure-eights to
develop puck control, shooting
blindfolded to develop on,-the-spot
reflexes, jumping over the top of
over-turned nets to develop
courage, etc., etc.
"We should probably be
playing the Exeter Hawks," she
noted, "but we'll take it easy on
our sons until the final minutes
and then turn on our power."
Grace "Zero" Gilfillan will fill
the nets opposite her son. The
blueline brigade will consist of
Agnes "The Brunette Jet"
Vandergunst, Cathy "Flower
Power" Whiteford, Barb
"Bruiser" Tiedeman and Karen
"Krazy Legs" Pfaff.
Shirley "Shifty" Pratt will
centre one line with Kaaren
"Crafty" Batten on one wing and
Mary "The Pro" Fisher on the
other.
Maddy "Hard Digging" Wells
will be on another line with Pat
"Scooter" Scott,
The balance of the team has not
yet been determined as the coach
is attempting to come up with a
suitable replacement for
Beatrice "Clear-the- track"
Dawson who may have tomiss
Saturday's game,
Spectators will be treated to
many thrills during the game, not
the least of which will be seeing
the officials for the game.
Mayor Bruce, Shaw, who
thought he was merely agreeing
to dropping the first puck, has
been signed as one of the of-
ficials, to be assisted by Reeve
Derry Boyle.
To give women's lib movement
equal representation, Councillor
Lossy Fuller will also don a
striped shirt. She notes she can
skate circles around the other
two officials so should be able to
keep the women's end up without
any male dominance.
The Saturday officiating chores
will be the first time ever on ice
for Mayor Shaw and he's been
assigned to linesmen duties so he
can hang onto the boards.
Bill Batten, coach of the
Waxers, says spirit is high among
his players, "We've been working
on body checks primarily," he
said, "as we expect to slow the
gals down and then score at will
in the later stages of the game."
