Hawks get tie with Irish
The senior Panthers came
within seven yards of pulling out
a victory in the dying minutes of
Saturday's game.
The locals moved the ball down
to the Goderich seven yard line
with less than a minute to go with
the score tied at 8-8. An at-
tempted field goal was blocked
and on the next play a punt trying
for a single point was also
blocked by the surging Goderich
front wall.
In overtime, speedy Tim
O'Brien scored his second, touch-
down of the game for Goderich,
The Panthers again came close to
scoring but their attack bogged
down.
The South Huron boys jumped
in front 8-0 in the first quarter and
appeared to be on the way to
victory. Early in the game Rob
Dickey scored a single point
when his try for a field goal went
wide.
Late in the first quarter, Dave
Lovell getting excellent blocking
from Bill Baker and Steve Pfaff
rambled 80 yards through the
entire Goderich team for a major
score.
Rob Dickey's convert boot split
the uprights and the Panthers
were ahead 8-0.
An earlier Panther scoring
attack set up when Bill Wilson
brought the kickoff back 72 yards
died out deep in Goderich
territory.
Goderich evened the score with
a second period converted touch-
down and a single point in the
fourth quarter as field goal boot
went wide.

Saturday's Huron-Perth
conference football cham-
pionship results were not
favourable as far as South Huron
District High School par-
ticipation was concerned but a
large crowd of local fans were
treated to two excellent games.
In a doubleheader played at
National stadium in Stratford,
the Goderich Vikings won both
games over the South Huron
Panthers by a seven point
spread in each instance.
The junior game was won by
Goderich 7-0 on a fourth quarter
converted touchdown and the
senior contest was taken by the
Vikings 15-8 after two overtime
periods.
The loss for the South Huron
juniors was the first of the entire
season. The only Goderich score
came on a 37 yard touchdown run
early in the fourth quarter to
break up a really closely fought
game.
For a large part of the game,
play was confined to between the
two 25 yard lines, The Panthers
had their best scoring chances in
the second quarter when they
moved the ball deep into
Goderich territory on, two oc-
casions.
The first threat bogged down on
the opposing five yard line when
a gamble for a touchdown off a
fake field goal failed and the
second try on third down from the
25 yard line also missed.
Coach Doug Ellison said the
loss was very disappointing to the
players and himself. He con-
tinued, "The boys worked hard
and both teams were very even. I
think the breaks determined the
winner as can be expected when
two clubs are so evenly mat-
ched,"
"I felt we controlled Goderich
well until their fourth quarter
score. The defence held except
for the touchdown and offensively
we moved the ball on the ground
much better than the previous
game against Goderich.
.Paul Pooley was named the
best offensive player on the
Panther junior club for the week
and the defensive award went to
Ken Govers.
The overall season record for
the club was eight straight vic-
tories before the loss in the final
round.
In Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" play this week the
Exeter Hawks battled to a 7-7
draw with the Lucan Irish in
Exeter Friday night and dropped
a 3-2 decision to the Mitchell
Hawks in Mitchell Tuesday.
All scoring in Tuesday's game
was Confined to the last half of the
game, Mitchell took a 2-1 lead at
the end of the second period and
each team scored once in the
final frame.
Donnie McKellar scored on a
three-way effort with Steve
Juveniles in
rough game
was able to score three times
to maintain the deadlock, The
Hawks fired two goals in the
first three minutes and appeared
to be on the way to victory.
Randy Gilfillan and Steve
Jennison were the marksmen and
they helped each other with
assists.
Then the Irish retaliated with
three goals and a temporary 7-6
lead.
Craig Corman registered on
passes from Gary Isaac and Ron
Funston, Brad Taylor scored
unassisted and Corman was back
with the assist going to Mike
McIntyre.
Only 38 seconds after Corman's
final goal, Rick Ingram con-
verted a pass from Gerald Weido
to complete the game scoring and
give each team a single point in
the league standings.
The game was relatively free
on penalties with the Hawks
taking nine of 15 called by'
referees.

Waxers dumped
by Parkhill
The Exeter Waxers were
dumped 7-1 by Parkhill in an
exhibition novice contest at the
Exeter arena, Saturday.
Darren Vandergunst scored the
lone Exeter goal when he picked
up a loose puck'after Brett Batten
blocked a shot at the Exeter
blueline. Vandergunst raced the
length of the ice to put the puck
behind the Parkhill goalie,
A week earlier in Parkhill, the
Waxers were clipped 5-0.
Jennison and Randy Gilfillan for
the first Hawks counter and the
other came from the stick of
John Beer on a pass from Harry
Smits,
Rick O'Donnell scored twice
for Mitchell and Doug Dietz was
the other goal getter.
The only action for the Hawks
this week is a Sunday trip to
Belmont to meet the Belmont
Green Giants.
The outcome of the Friday
contest was in doubt from start to
finish as first one club and then
the other held a short-lived lead.
The Irish were first to hit the
scoreboard with two goals in the
first eight minutes and then the
Hawks caught fire and were able
to take a 3-2 lead by the end of the
first period.
Mike Wraith started the Lucan
club off on the right foot as he
completed a play with Ron
Funston and Gary Isaac assisting
at 6:03, Only two minutes later
Brian McNeil hit the mark on a
pass from Jeff Park.
At 9:50 of the opening session,
the Hawks hit the scoreboard as.
Brian Taylor notched his first of
three goals on a three-way effort
with Wayne Regier and Harry
Smits.
The score became tied at 12:57

pass from Matt Muller and Bria1i
Taylor put the Hawks in front
with five minutes left in the
period with assists going to Harry
Smits and Rick Mommersteeg.
In the middle frame, Mike
McIntyre put the Irish back on
even terms at 1:21 with passing
help from Gary Herr and Brian
McNeil.
Ron Funston converted a pass
from Ed Robb at 16:38 to put the
Lucan club ahead 4-3 but Brian
Taylor was quick to even the
score again with his third goal of
the night at 18:15.
In the third period each team
.It was a great pleasure to be able to cavort around
Stratford's National Stadium Saturday afternoon in real
summer like weather during the Huron-Perth Conference
football finals.
Being able to be out on November 9 in shirt sleeves was
a real contrast to exactly a year ago when the same foot-
ball championship was played at the South Huron District
High School field.
November 10,1973 was a cold, blustery day and a work
crew laboured most of the morning in removing a good foot
of snow from the field to allow the ,game to be played.
Both Panther teams turned in excellent performances
in Saturday's games against Goderich but lost on a couple
of tough breaks.
Doug Ellison's juniors unbeaten throughout the regular
season and playoffs were beaten 7-0 by the Vikings while
Ron Bogart's seniors just failed to pull out a win in the dy-
ing minutes and had to settle for an 8-8 tie.
Goderich went on to score a converted touchdown in
overtime and won the championship 15-8.
Better luck, next year, fellows.
An explanation
At the request of coach Ron Bogart we would like to
pass on his comments of what happened Saturday when the
senior Panthers appeared to be close to wrapping up the
championship in the final minute of regulation time.
"If anyone is to blame for our loss on Saturday I guess
it has to be me for making the wrong decision at the end of
the game, In looking back, I guess we should have
attempted a punt on first down to get the winning point
because John Gould could have boomed the ball out of the
park."
"Even on second down he should have punted instead of
the field goal attempt and hoped our defence as they were
playing well could have held Goderich for the last minute,"
"I take full responsibility for the loss. I'm sorry for my
team and the fans that I made the wrong decision. I thought
it was right at the time. It cost us the championship."
"I cannot give enough praise to the 1974 senior
Panthers, They played their hearts out. I could ask for no
more over the season and particularly on Saturday. It was
just fantastic."
"Without a doubt 1974 has been the most gratifying
season for me at South Huron. It was disappointing at the
start of the season when 20 veterans from last year were ex-
pected back and only 12 did report. We were counting on
them but the 36 boys that did come out were just great.
They showed great dedication and desire - a must to be
successful."
Well said, Ron.
Excellent cross country running
The performances this year by the cross country
runners at South Huron District High school have been
TP'grrerd bus .
The Huron-Perth Conference championship was won
for the first time by the local school and the senior girls
team went on to win at the Western Ontario Secondary
School level in London.
Going further, South Huron competitors also put up a
good show at the all-Ontario finals at Toronto finishing in
seventh place.
A lot of credit goes to coaches Joe Fulop and Larry
Powell and all the youngsters for a great deal of dedication
throughout the season.
Jets had good vocal support
Wherever the Lucan-Ilderton Jets go to play hockey
they have a good following of supporters and they have to be
the loudest in the country.
We were fortunate to make a trip to Napanee with the
Jets a couple of years ago and the wives and girl friends of
the players comprised a pretty noisy contingent.
This was very evident this past weekend when the Jets
made their annual jaunt to Erie, Pennsylvania to meet the
Erie Lions.
We were able to catch a few minutes of the game on
television from Erie and the cheers of "Go Jets, Go" were
very clear over the air. It was no trouble in spotting the key
cheer leader, Elvie Urbshott.
While husband Don does a terrific job as managerof the
Jets, his wife Elvie puts forth an equally fine effort in the
noise department. She could possibly be a little louder than
her husband. Keep them on their toes,Elvie.
These watts are expensive
One of the newest completely covered sports stadiums
is the Superdome at New Orleans and it is likely the most
expensive.
There is a ceiling on the stadium but certainly not a
ceiling on expenses. The latest estimate of operating costs
per day and this is every day of the year is $37,500.
This figure includes bonded debt service, personnel and
the new high price of energy, The last item is up about $2,-
000 a day to $4,800 or an astounding $1,752,000 a year.
One could say this news is rather shocking!
