For the past two weeks, Sid Sybenga was here, taking over the teaching of Mr, Probizanski's 240 Science classes His base is Althouse College in London and he's in his fifth year of study. He is studying and teaching his two options; elementary and science. While teaching the three classes, he stated that he had no specific problems, but he sure likes to let the kids know who is boss, When asked if he liked the long periods for teaching, he replied that the shorter periods require much less preparation of class material, so therefore, he favored them, When Mr. Sybenga finishes his schooling he would like to get a position near London, teaching science to elementary students. By DEB HILLMAN It has been noted that recent controversy about an editorial in the Guardian was a good thing because the interest shown helped to display school spirit. It also showed that the Guardian is indeed being read. Yet, will the situation remain stable? It is doubtful that the Guardian can or will survive on the 'nourishment' it is now getting. Although the journalism class is technically in charge of the school newspaper this does not mean that other students cannot contribute. Anyone who wishes to have their say can do so in the Guar- dian. Colour stories and poetry are also acceptable for the paper is supposedly school oriented, It also should be known that comments by the staff are welcome. While on the topic of contributions perhaps it is possible that certain members of the English 458 class could submit some of their work. According to the teacher it is advisable. If you have something to say or wish to' ask a question of the South Huron students why don't you write your ideas down? They will be published with pleasure, in the Guardian. Have you had any original thoughts lately? This Week's SPECIAL In Our NEW FURNITURE DEPARTMENT Theatre arts group to t r schools The long and short of it Dear Editor, This year S.H.D.H.S. has a new period system. As we all know these periods are seventy minutes long. I would like to know what the rest of the student body thinks of the longer periods. The teachers I've talked to said it is much harder to prepare a lesson for seventy minutes and that students tend to get restless. I know myself that some classes get boring but, then again, classes like Home Economics, Physics, Chemistry and Physical Education need that seventy minutes. Why couldn't we have a system where some periods were seventy minutes long and some were shorter. The teachers that need long periods would have them and the teachers that think a shorter period would be adequate for their subject would be satisfied also. Of course this is only my opinion but, what does the rest of the student body think? Do you want the same system next year? A Concerned Student fl PRICED AT ONLY SPACE SAVERS $8 00 SEVEN TO CHOOSE FROM 9 WHITING'S from dance to story theatre. It will contain everything from a wizard to a wandering, troubadour to a walking rose bush. Last year the tour was a big hit, which can easily be seen from the response from public schools this year. We wish them success again. Following the tour the group will immediately start into work on their play for competition, "Colours in the Dark". This is the first year that they have at- tempted a play that will be technically involved. It will result in a lot of work after school as well as during class. Obviously Theatre Arts is not the usual type of class. It involves a lot of worthwhile work which should be appreciated by more of the students. It will be worth your while to take an interest and give your support to the Theatre Arts people in South Huron. A father went to a fellow and said; "You've been calling on my daughter now for years. Are your intentions to her honorable or dishonorable?" And the fellow says, "You mean I got a choice ?" By CHERYL TURKHEIN't One of the most unnoticed groups of the school is Theatre Arts. The senior Theatre Arts class is taking on. various projects this Year. On Thursday, October 17, they presented a performance of Canadian literature at the request of the Modern Canadian novels class. It opened with selections from various books written by Canadian women. The second half was a presentation of Canadian poetry. Both sections were made more effective with music which was played by members of the senior Theatre Arts class, The selection of material and assignment of parts was done mainly by the students themselves, The attendance and audience response were both quite good. At present, they are working on their performance which they will take on tour of the public schools, the first week in December. They make all their own sets, props, and costumes, with the help of some of the staff members. They also write their own scripts. The performance will consist of four fairy tales and will range Exeter ANTIQUES, NEW AND USED FURNITURE 235-1964 Main St. even more beautiful with spectacles Carpenter Optical Shoppe Exeter 405 Main Street Phone 235-0511
