The team received their awards from newly elected secretary of WOSSA Doug Ellison of South Huron. There appears to be some interest by local athletes in the upcoming Winter Games to be held in Waterloo on November 30 and December 1. Doug Ellison wrestling coach at South Huron District High school said he has several boys interested in com- peting and he would like to hear from any others. These would probably be boys who have been members of the school wrestling team during the last couple of years. The weight divisions range from 105 pounds through 191 pounds and a heavyweight class. The age stipulations are from 16 to 20 years of age. Any boys wishing to compete in wrestling should con- tact Doug Ellison as soon as possible. In coversation with Jim McKinlay at the Exeter rec of- fice he tells us he has passed on information along to in- terested people in bowling, broomball, gymnastics and volleyball. McKinlay is still pursuing the idea of an Exeter and dis- trict recreation basketball league. He has some response from an earlier request and would like to hear from more. He would like to form a four team league but believes this would be rather difficult for the first year. Jim is now hoping to form two teams and play in a loop with two teams from Seaforth. opening game The Exeter Broncos made their first start in Shamrock league atom division play a winning one Sunday afternoon by downing St. Marys 3-1, The Broncos will be back in action at the Exeter arena Sunday afternoon at 5:30 with Lambeth supplying the op- position. . Dave Shaw tied the score on a three-way effort with Bill Glover and Dave Underwood and Scott Pincombe scored the winner with passing help from Underwood. The insurance marker came from the stick of Mark Van- dergunst with assists going to Scott Pincombe and Dave Shaw. No change in dart lead Local 'B' teams get single point The best two Exeter minor hockey teams could do in Shamrock "B" league play Monday night was get one draw. Quar- terback Perry Pooley scored a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters, both on keepers plays, the first one was converted and the second trywent astray. The seniors will meet Central Huron of Clinton and the junior opposition was not 'known at press time. Apparently four teams are tied for third and fourth places in the standings. In a Thursday doubleheader the Panther seniors downed Listowel 20-6 and the juniors came up with a 26-8 victory. Overcome early lead In Tuesday's junior game the Panthers came roaring back from an 8-0 deficit and scored a touchdown on the last play of the first half. The Panthers scoring drive started when Rick Bilcke recoverdd a Goderich fumble. With time running out quar- terback Perry Pooley handed the ball to his brother Paul for a halfback sweep and he threw a 25 yard pass to Jeff O'Brien in the end zone for six points. Paul Brooks sent the convert attempt through the uprights and the South Huron team went to the half trailing by only a single point. Another Skateathon The Exeter arena will be the scene Monday November 11 for another skateathon. This time it will be figure skaters trying to go a seven hour period from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Remembrance Day. All proceeds from sponsors will go to finance the current year's program of the Exeter figure skating club. Anyone wishing to skate or sponsor or get further infor- mation should contact the club president Anne Prout at 235- 0715 or Flo Underwood at 235-2053. Move ahead for Chipper One of the most successful area men in professional hockey ranks in the United States has taken on a new posi- tion for the coming year. Jack Chipchase of Hensall will be the assistant playing coach of the Philadelphia Firebirds of the northern division of the North American hockey league. Chipchase who has been a favorite for the past four years with the Roanoke Valley Rebels fans in the Southern league will be joining several other former Rebels. Greg Piling has moved along from the Rebels to the Firebirds as head coach. They will be working closely with Fred Shero and the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL. Shero was Chipchase's coach in several of his earlier years in pro ranks in the States. Time4Or, trades • • ' * The first two days of eligible Open trading in the two v- major baseball leagues brought about acouple of surprising moves. Don't be surprised if there are a lot more in the next few weeks and the Detroit Tigers should be involved. These next few comments will be strictly personal views as to which players the Tigers may be putting on the trading block. In the last couple of months Jim Campbell and Ralph Houk really went to the youth movement and there is no reason to believe this trend would not continue. There are always a few teams looking for good hitters which may be over the hill but would still be quite accep- table as designated hitters. The Tigers have a good crop of young outfielders and should be able to manage without the likes of Willie Horton and Bill Freehan. The 1974 season had to be frustrating for Mickey Lolich who is the first Tiger pitcher to lose 20 games in one season since Art Houtteman managed the feat in 1952. Lolich's per- formance was a long cry from his 1968 season when he was the main reason the Tigers won the World Series over the Cardinals. The brightest spot on the Tiger pitching staff is Vern Ruhie who was their 17th draft choice in 1972. He came up to the Tigers at the tail end of this season and pitched brilliantly in two relief jobs before Ralph Houk gave him a starting chance. Ruble responded by allowing Boston only two hits in seven innings and then coming back on Al Kaline Day with a 7-4 win over the same Red Sox team. We would hope the Tigers don't trade John Hiller but it certainly could happen. Hiller has completed two excellent seasons and that's the time to get the best on the trading market. Talking about Kaline, the enormity of his 3,000 big league hits strikes on when it's realized the nine players in the Tiger line-up after Al was taken out on the last day of the season have a total of only 1,930 hits, It won't seem the same to hear a Tiger broadcast without the name of Kaline being heard. Penalties hurt Throughout the senior game, penalties caused problems for the Panthers but' the excellent punting of John Gould kept the Listowel team back in their own end for most of the game. Gould's best boot was an 80 yard boomer in the second quarter which went for 80 yards and a single point. The first South Huron touch- down came in the first quarter and was set up when John Gould raced down the field to recover his own kick. From the Listowel six yard line, Brian Taylor bulled his way over the goal line and Bill Wilson converted.Along with Gould's single the Panthers enjoyed an 8- 0 lead at halftime. In the third period the Panthers accomplished four first downs due to good ground gains by Dave Lovell, Doug Mclsaac and Brian Taylor. The big gain was 45 yards by Lovell and quarterback John Van Gerwen hit Noel Skinner with a six yard pasS good for a major score. Dave Lovell counted the final Panther touchdown in the closing period on a run around the right end. It was set up on fumble recovery by Wayne Oke. Dave Lovell was the top ground gainer for the Panthers with 148 yards in 13 attempts at the line. He was also named the most outstanding offensive player. The defensive award went to Rodger Dougall. Goderich scored their eight points early on a single and a converted touchdown by Tom O'Keefe. In the third quarter neither team could muster much of an offence and play ranged in the midfield area until Brad Cann of the Panthers intercepted a Goderich pass. On the last play of the third quarter on another halfback sweep Steve Knight threw a 25 yard pass to the Goderich two yard line and Jeff O'Brien made a spectacular diving catch. After the change of ends Perry Pooley scored immediately on a quarterback sneak. Paul Brooks booted the convert and the Panthers were in front 14-8. Wait for next time Despite the 22-13 loss to the Goderich seniors, Panther coach Ron Bogart said after the game "next time we meet them it will be different. We gave them two touchdowns today." The Panthers wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. On the first Goderich play from scrimmage Van Tuckey received a fumble for South Huron, Dave Lovell and Doug Mclsaac with good runs moved the ball down to the four yard line and Brian Taylor took it over for a major score, Bill Wilson's con- vert attempt was good and the Panthers were in front 7-0, Midway through the second quarter Goderich moved deep into Panther territory and their ball carrier fumbled the ball in the end zone but Gerry O'Brien was able to recover after two SH players failed to come up with the ball. Vikings quarterback went 60 yards on a roll-out for his team's second touchdown late in the first half. Both converts were good and Goderich led 14-7 at the half, In the third' quarter Larry Donnelly scored for Goderich. Casey Wildger converted and also kicked a single. Three forward passes produced the last touchdown for the Panthers. The last one was for 15 yards from 'quarterback John Van Gerwen to Tim Ross. In the junior game against Listowel Thursday the Panthers took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter and were never headed in recording a 28-6 decision. The Panthers opened the scoring as Steve Knight rambled 50 yards off tackle for a touch- down and Paul Brooks converted. The locals failed to notch their second major from the Listowel one yard line on a third down effort and Listowel came back on the very next play to go for 109 yards and a major score. The convert attempt failed and the score was 7-6. In the second quarter Brad Johns recovered a Listowel fumble and the Panthers were in good field position. It took only two plays to move onto the scoreboard again. Steve Knight hit Jeff O'Brien with a 25 yard pass and Perry Pooley's pass of the same distance was gobbled up by O'Brien for six points. Paul Brooks again converted and the score was 14-6. A missed field goal attempt went for a single point late in the Decisive win for juveniles The Exeter juveniles scored an impressive 14-4 win over Dochester in Shamrock league play at the Exeter arena Sunday night. Kim McKinnon and Brion Penhale led the scoring attack with identical four goal per- formances. Next in line came Rick Moody with a hat trick. Getting one goal apiece were Mike Desjardine, Randy Regier and Pat Bedard. The juveniles will be back in action Sunday night on home ice at 8:30 p.m. The opposition will be supplied by Lucan. In a recent exhibition game, Exeter downed Lucan 3-1. The Exeter marksmen were Rick Ingram, Gary Jennison and Dave Regier while Gary Connolly counted for Lucan.
