"Dashwood is the centre of the
Universe in terms of community
spirit", David McCoy, Director of
development community ser-
vices for the mentally retarded
said at the official opening of the
Adult Rehabilitation Centre
(ARC) in Dashwood on Sunday.
Mr. McCoy congratulated the
citizens of Dashwood and
surrounding municipalities for
the community spirit they have
shown in providing the facilities
at ARC.
He said the Ministry of Com-
munity and Social Services were
most impressed with the efforts
of the area,
"The workshop in Dashwood is
a major breakthrough", McCoy
said "because it is not only a
centre for rehabilitation but also
a focal point for community in-
volvement".
The official opening
ceremonies showed the strength
of the community involvement in
the South Huron Association for
the Mentally Retarded and their
project to construct a workshop
for handicapped adults. Over 200
attended the ceremonies of
passing the key and cutting the
ribbon to officially open the
building which has been in
operation for the past year.
McCoy, representing the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services was the guest
speaker for the afternoon.
He said that the amount of time
and effort, as well as money
which have gone into the
building, planning and operation
of the ARC workshop was very
commendable.
McCoy outlined the province's
'new policy focus 'for 'care for thb
mentally retarded and han-
dicapped which centres around
community involvement,
"The Ministry would like to
ensure that the province's
disabled have a place to live,
work and recreate."
He outlined the functions of the
workshop in Dashwood as
assessment, training and
providing sheltered employment
for the handicapped adults of the
area. He said that many other
services are necessary for the
handicapped person to remain in
their communities, With the
construction of similar
rehabilitation centres the
associations have taken a step
closer to community living and
training for these under-
priviledged adults.
During the opening ceremonies
the facilities at the ARC
Industries were dedicated by
Father John G. Mooney of Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel, and a prayer
was offered by Rev. C. Kuepfer.
