Hawks
practice •
Candidates for the Exeter Hawks junior hockey club for
the coming year are preparing for regular league action
with twice weekly workouts at the Huron Park arena.
More than 35 players attended the first practice and
newly appointed coach Terry Bourne will have quite a chore
in choosing a team.
We were pleased with the appointment of Bourne as the
Hawks coach, He has considerable experience in four
classes of hockey competition and should do a good job,
After playing junior with the Ingersoll Marlands Terry
spent part of one year with Eddie Shore and his Springfield
Indians when the former Boston Bruins tough defenceman
was having strike problems with his players.
From there he played a season with Vic Stasiuk and the
Jersey Devils. Then came his first sojourn as coach of the
Hawks for two seasons and the last three years have been
spent with the Lucan-Ilderton Jets in OHA senior company.
The new coach plans on moulding a club which will
stick to the fundamentals of hockey featuring good
positional play and discipline.
The first real action for prospective Hawks comes Fri-
day night, October 4 at the Huron Park arena when an intra-
squad game will be held.
The following Friday, Bourne expects to have his club
pretty well set and will take on the Lucan Irish, also at
Huron Park.
Two new clubs have joined the OHA Western "D" divi-
sion for this season and one team has been lost. The new-
comers are from Seaforth and Port Stanley.
The "D" league's loss is the Clinton Colts through their
elevation to the OHA Junior "C" league.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets are also in the midst of exten-
sive training. Don Urbshott, Jack Nairn and company are
lining up a strong team.
The winner of the Continental senior league in
which the Jets play are eligible this year to play for the
Allan Cup. The winner of this grouping is expected to meet
the best from the OHA "A" grouping which includes teams
from Galt, Barrie, Whitby and Napanee.
Whipping into shape
The current clinic being carried on by the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association appears to be very successful.
The some 35 boys participating are of novice and mite
class ages and are taking part in six exercise sessions at the
Exeter arena and the same amount of stints on the ice at
Huron Park.
After an hour and a half session of skating, stopping,
jumping, knee bends and such the boys are ready to take
their skates off. At the first workout each boy was timed for
various tests and this will again be done at the last session
to determine the amount of progress being made.
Ron Horn, president of the EMHA said he would be hap-
py if some of the older more experienced -boys take a second
or two off their times during the six weekly sessions,
The boys were timed in going around a marked course
on the ice going clockwise and then going in the reverse
direction.
All of the ice time coaching is being handled by coaches
in the local 'minor hockey program, Most of them have
attended coaches clinics and have a Level Two grading in
the CAHA sponsored coaches certification program.
A clinic for level one is being held in Exeter sometime
in November.

Blanshard wins girls/title
The old saying of "a series isn't
over until the last man is out"
came true , Thursday night at
Exeter Community Park.
In a slightly different version,
the Blanshard girls softball team
proved a series is never over until
the final out is made.
After losing the first two games
of the best-of-five South Perth
ladies final, the Blanshard girls
bounced back with three ex-
cellent performances including
Thursday's final 7-4 win.

Hunting rules
A recent release from the Wingham district office of
the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources tells about some
of the regulations regarding hunting in Western Ontario.
The bag limits for ducks and geese is five except not
more than three Canada geese may be taken in the counties
of Huron, Essex, Lambton, Middlesex, Kent and Elgin.
In the counties of Perth, Huron, Bruce and Grey the
season on most small game is now open having begun on
September 28 but the closing dates are quite different.
Squirrels and pheasants may not be hunted after
December 14 while the last date for Hungarian partridge is
November 16, Grouse may be shot up until January 15 and
the final date for rabbits is February 28.
A regulated township licence is required in addition to
the resident hunting licence in the three local townships of
Hay, Stephen and Usborne and in the entire county of Perth.
These licences are available at the township clerk's office.
There is no closed season on raccoon but a hunter must
have a special licence to hunt coon at night and must be ac-
companied by a licenced dog. These licences may be
purchased from the Ministry of Natural Resources.
An open season for deer will be held throughout the
Wingham district for bow and arrow from October 28 to
November 24.
The season will be open for guns from November 11 to
14 throughout the entire district governed by the Wingham
office except the county of Perth. Dogs are not allowed to
hunt deer and only shot guns may be used in the county of
Huron.
The Wingham district includes the counties of Huron
and Perth and the townships of Huron, Kinloss, Culross and
Carrick in Bruce and the township of Minto in Wellington.
Reaches a milestone
One of the all-time greats of the Detroit Tigers reached
a hitting milestone last week and was honored Sunday after-
noon at Tiger Stadium.
Al Kaline is only the,12th major league player to reach
the 3,000 hit plateau. Up to date, Kaline has reached the 3,-
006 mark and has 399 home runs and 498 doubles.
With the regular season ending this week, Al has only a
couple of chances to up his batting marks as he is expected
to retire after 22 years in pro ball, all with the Tigers,
