One of the biggest problems of any family reunion is setting a date that suits everybody. It's impossible! Instead a day must be chosen which will hopefully prove satisfactory for the majority. Of course, all the members of our family can't attend the picnic. The farmers are working with their crops at this time of the year; some people are vacationing; and others live too far away to make the trip. August is a busy month. Can you name a month that isn't busy? As the reunion day rolls around, we sometimes complain, especially if the weather is hot and humid. Packing a picnic dinner, battling with the bugs for space at the table and keeping track of the kids all afternoon present a difficult task. Perhaps more relaxing or more exciting activities beckon us, For many of us, though, the reunion is the only occasion in the year that we see each other. Is one day out of 365 an over- whelming sacrifice? Relatives are nice to have. It's also nice to be able to recognize them, when we see them. I guess that's what family reunions are for, ...161•11111011111‘ Most families hold annual reunions, In August, my mother's side of our family congregates for a picnic in. Riverview Park. It means an afternoon of chatter, laughter and reminiscence, During lunch, we compare the past year's ac- tivities and discuss our future plans. We also marvel at how much the kids have grown. Later the adults chuckle while the kids pop balloons, hunt for peanuts, run three-legged races and kick their shoes. When the sports program is concluded, questions such as "Can I go down to the water, mommy?" or "Will you give me a swing?" are often heard. The oldest person in attendance as well as the youngest usually receives a prize, In addition, we note the family that has travelled the longest distance to attend the gathering. If a wedding occurred during the year, the new member of the family is introduced to his or her in-laws. It must seem confusing, The names of aunts, uncles and first cousins are hard enough to remember, but second and third cousins add more complications. Our family now totals more than 100 members. Like most large clans, we often lose contact with each other. When we held the first picnic four years ago, some of us hadn't seen each other for many years. One boy caught everyone's at- tention. Each of us thought he belonged to someone else, "Your boy has certainly grown," one cousin remarked to another. "That's not my boy. I thought he was one of yours," she replied. "No, he's not mine. I wonder who he belongs to." Someone finally asked his name and learned he wasn't related to any of us. While his parents visited friends near the park, he took a walk and decided to join our group. He participated in the games and sat in the front row for the pictures. I wouldn't be surprised to discover he ate with He pointed out many places of interest. They then drove to Elora and visited "The en- chanted doll house". There were 1100 dolls of all descriptions. A visit was made to the Bon Accord antique furniture showroom and woodworking shop. A short business meeting was held outside at theDoll house with roll call, "One thing I would like to tell a stranger about the Women's Institute." Plans were made for Exeter and Kirkton fairs. BO YLE'S LWADEIAERS' Main St. (Beside Exeter Pharmacy) Exeter The Hurondale Women's Institute took a bus trip to Elmira to the Mennonite district. The trip was planned by Mrs. Lloyd Ballantyne and Mrs. Arthur Rundle. They met at one of their churches and the minister gave a history of the Mennonites and showed pictures which were very interesting. The Mennonite ladies served dinner after which they were taken on a tour of the country with Ivan Shantz as guide.
