runs in the sixth inning. Dave
Revington, Jim Lewyckyj and
Terry Bourne doubled and
crossed the plate.
The Expos were able to get at
least one runner on base in every
other inning but veteran. Clinton
pitcher Cain McDonald came up
with strikeouts in the clutch, He
and starter Ed Daer whiffed 12
Expos altogether.
The other four Exeter safeties
were singles by Dave Parsons,
Larry Haugh, Terry Bourne and
Dave Revington.
uprising in the ninth,
Rob Grant was safe on an error
and scored on Bill Bourne's
double in the Exeter first. Dave
Revington walked and Bill
Bourne singled and both scored in
the third frame,
To open the Expos fifth, Bill.
Bourne collected his third
straight hit, a double and rode
home as Jim Lewyckyj socked a
home run. Bill Farquhar doubled
later in the same inning.
Other Exeter hits in scoreless
innings were singles by Jim
Pfaff, Brian Haskett and Bill
Farquhar.
Expo hurler Jim Pfaff gave up
five hits and three runs in the
first inning but settled down and
allowed only four singles the rest
of the way, In fact, Pfaff held the
Arva club hitless in the last three
innings.
Walt Parkinson was the only
member of the Arva team to get
more than one hit.

Score resounding wins
It's with mixed emotions that we heard of the trade
Wednesday night of Jim Northrup from the Detroit Tigers
to the Montreal Expos.
Jim has been one of our favorite Tigers for about 10
years now. During our ,stay in the Motor city for the 1968
World Series Jim was the most agreeable member of the
ball club as far as interviews were concerned,
Northrup was one of the heroes for the Tigers withhis
grand slam home run. He will be missed around Tiger
Stadium but we agree it's about time some of the veterans
were cleared out and a youth rebuilding program started.
Jim started off on theright footwith the Montreal team
and was a key figure in wins posted by the Expos in two of
the first three games he played.
His homerun and a singlegave the Expos a Friday night
win and Sunday afternoon another round tripper helped in
the 5-2 victory over Houston.
The Expos while still in fourth place in the National
league east have cut their deficit to only three and a half
games.
Northrup's presence willcertainly be felt on the Expos
roster. If not used regularly in the outfield he will be a
valuable pinch hitter.
Getting back to the Tigers, they also released veteran
first baseman Norm Cash and will likely do a lot more
house cleaning before the 1975 season starts.
When Cash and Northrupwere let go,Tiger officials said
they were not giving up on pennant hopes for this year. We
would disagree with this statement, Manager Ralph Houk
in recent games has certainly been experimenting with a
promising bunch of youngsters.
Expos in contention
The Expos from Montreal are not the only team of the
same name in contention for playoff honours.
The Exeter Expos have had a reasonably successful
year in the Huron-Perth intermediate baseball league. One
of the big games of the season for the locals comes up Sun-
day afternoon at Exeter Community park when they take on
the tough Clinton Colts.
The Clinton club is still undefeated this year. The Ex-
pos and Colts meet Sunday in the final game of a round
robin series which also includes Thorndale, and Arva.
At the time of writing on the weekend, the Expos were
even with two wins and two losses in the playoff round. A
win Tuesday night against Arva would almost assure them
a place in the final round. The other club will be Clinton.
The winner of the finals between the two top clubs in
the round robin series will not only win the Huron-Perth
championship but also will be the district representative in
the OBA "C" playdowns.
A good crowd at the local park Sunday afternoon would
be encouraging for the Expos as they continue to dish up a
good brand of ball.

An Exciting Finish
The 8-7 Expos win in Arva
Wednesday night was ac-
complished in exciting come-
from-behind fashion. Trailing 7-5
with one out in the top of the ninth
the Expos set to work and pulled
the win out of the fire.
With the first batter retired,
Dave Parsons was hit by a pitch
and Perry Stover walked, Up to
the plate came clean-up hitter
Jim Lewyckyj and that's exactly
what he did with a long home run.
Larry Haugh also singled in the
ninth but failed to score.
Jim Pfaff who went all the way
on the hill for the Expos quickly
retired the Arva club in order in
the ninth, all on ground balls with
darkness threatening,
The score see-sawed back and
forth in the early innings. The
count was even at 5-5 after five
innings of play and Thorndale
took a two run lead in the sixth
which held until the Exeter
The Exeter Expos face their
most important test of the Huron-
Perth baseball season Sunday
afternoon at Exeter Community
Park at 2 p.m. when they face the
Clinton Colts in the final game of
a round robin playoff.
In order to stay alive the Expos
must down the Colts who are
undefeated through the entire
season. The Exeter club in one of
the busiest weeks of the year
broke even winning two and
losing two.
Wednesday night, the Expos
came through with an exciting
ninth inning finish to edge Arva 8-
7. Friday they lost 10-3 to Clinton,
Sunday it was a 10-8 victory over
Thorndale and Tuesday night the
Arva Athletics came up with a 5-
2 decision.
The best the Expos can hope for
with a win over Clinton Sunday
would be a tie for second spot in
the series with Arva. Clinton has
clinched first place,
Three runs for the Arva team in
the sixth inning provided the
margin of victory over the Expos
Tuesday night. The Athletics took
a 2-0 lead after the third inning of
play and the Expos were not able
to catch up.
Paul McKnight's homer with
two out and the bases empty in
the bottom of the fifth gave the
Expos their first score.
The final run came in the
eighth when the Expos mounted
their best scoring threat of the
entire game. Dave Revington
opened with a single but the next
two batters were retired.
Terry Bourne kept things alive
with a single to move Revington
to third, Larry Haugh walked to
load the bases and Dave Parsons
also drew a walk to force
Revington across the plate and
keep the bases loaded.
Schooley on the mound for
Arva was able to get the next
batter on strikes and retired the
side in the ninth to gain the
victory for his club.
Other hits for the Exeter club in
addition to the scoring innings
were singles by Bill Bourne and
Dave Revington.
Paul McKnight was on the
mound for Exeter giving up a
total of 10 hits while gaining four
strikeouts.
Tigers take playoff lead
Tigers in the seventh as Bob
Hoffman singled. A single by
Desjardine and Dietrich's double
sent three runs home in the
eighth and the same number of
runs scored in the ninth on hits by
the same two Tigers.
Zurich could never manage
more than one run an inning off
the slants of Guenther. Dick
Bedard was safe on an error in
the third and scored. Jeffrey
counted in similar fashion in the
eighth and Rick Schilbe doubled
and scored in the ninth.
Guenther showed fine control
and struck out nine Met batters.
Veteran Dick Bedard was the
Zurich starter getting relief help
from Jeffrey in the seventh.
started by singles by Jim Hoff-
man, Tom Hill and Bob Hoffman,
an error and two walks and was
capped off by Jim Guenther's
bases clearing homer.
Bob Hoffman's single chased
Bud Desjardine home in the fifth.
The last big Tiger outburst came
in the seventh when six runs
scored. Tom Hill led the closing
attack with a pair of singles.
The second and last Zurich
marker came in the eighth as
Aub Bedard was hit by a pitch
and eventually scored.
Guenther in pitching the first
seven innings retired nine Mets
on strikeouts. Dave Ratz, another
left hander tossed the last two
innings and fanned three.
Pitching for Zurich were John
Mommersteeg, Aub Bedard and
Kevin McKinnon.

The Dashwood Tigers took a
one game lead in the Huron-Perth
intermediate "D" finals this
week with two resounding wins
over the Zurich Mets.
Zurich won the first game of
the best-of-seven series a week
earlier and then the Tigers came
roaring back. They scored a 17-2
victory in Dashwood Friday night
and came right back in Zurich
Sunday afternoon with a similar
17-3 win.
The fourth game of the series
was played in Dashwood last
night, Wednesday. The fifth will
be staged Friday night at 8 p.m.,
also in Dashwood. A sixth contest
if necessary will be in Zurich
Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Jim Guenther was the star for
the Tigers in both wins over
Zurich. The big left hander was
on the mound in both games and
hit three home runs.
Sunday, Guenther, opened the ,‘
sdonritig with a lead-off hoe run
in the second inning. Stan Lovie
followed with another round
tripper and the Tigers never
looked back,
A double by Bud Desjardine,
triple from the bat of Jim
Dietrich and singles from Bob
Hoffman and Tom Hill produced
four more runs in the second.
Stan Lovie's double chased Bill
Schade across the plate in the
Dashwood fifth and singles by
Joe O'Rourke and Schade scored
two in the sixth.

Lakewood Tennis Club's first
tournament at Grand Bend on the
weekend. Well known players
from Detroit, Windsor, Toronto
and London presented spec-
tators with the best tennis this
area has ever seen.
Greg Haider and Brien Mit-
chell who were the top-seeded
team, from Toronto showed
unexcellfed class in winning the
tourney beating John Turner and
Tom Borecky of London in
straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
The serves of the two Toronto
players, still in their teens,
proved too much for the veterans
from London. Haider was the talk
of the tournament and many
tennis people predict he will be
Canada's number one player in
the near future.
The team of Peter Wright and
Mike Wilson of London advanced
to the one semi-final match, while
Ralph Legall and John Wohlers
made it to the other. Legall, from
Windsor played on the Davis Cup
team for the West Indies in 1954-

Australia played his junior tennis
with such greats as Ron Laver
and Ken Rosewall, They played a
dazzling game with smooth
ground strokes and hard volleys
before bowing out to the
younger, team of Turner and

Lots of Base Hits •
Sunday's game in which the
Expos edged Thorndale .10-8, the
emphasis was on the offensive as
a total of 32 hits were rapped out.
The Expos , in collecting 19
singles had; at .least one hit in
every inning and left a total of 12
runners on base,
Two runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning proved to be the
difference in the Expos win.
Dave Parsons opened the
Exeter seventh with a double
and raced home on Dave
Revington's long home run.
The Expos hit the scoreboard
for the first time in the second
inning on consecutive singles
from the bats of Larry Haugh,
Dave Parsons, Jim Pfaff and Bill
Farquhar.
In the Exeter fourth the first
four batters reached the base
paths and three were able to
complete their base cycle.
Larry Haugh and Bill
Farquhar cracked doubles and
Dave Parsons and Jim Pfaff
contributed singles.
Four hits in the Expos fifth
produced two more runs. This
time the safeties were delivered
by Randy Tieman, Jim Pfaff, Bill
Farquhar and Dave Revington.
The eighth Exeter run came on
Jim Lewyckyj's bases empty
homer in the sixth.
Paul McKnight started on the
mound for the Expos. Jim Pfaff
came on in relief in the second
inning when Thorndale mounted
a scoring threat and he finished
up weathering a late rally which
included a homer by John Miller
in the eighth.

Excellent shows
Organizers of -Dashwood Friedsburg Days and Ailsa
Craig Centennial are to be congratulated on putting on
tremendous shows.
Friedsburg Days were again very successful as the
committee came up with a couple of innovations to enter-
thin the public. A Queen was crowned for the first time and
a very good talent show was held.
The talent show wasactually started a year ago as a
variety program but was extended this year and prizes
were provided.
The Centennial celebrations at Ailsa Craig drew large
crowds throughout the four day observance and chairman
Harold Guilfoyle and his committee were overwhelmed
with the response to all events.
We were interested in the Old Timers ballgame at Ailsa
Craig. It was a chance to see some of the members of the
Craig softball team which participated in Ontario Softball
Association playoffs back in the.1950's.
At that time we were involved in umpiring and of-
ficiated in an excellent series with Merlin downing the
Craig club in very low scoring games. The star pitcher of
that team Vince Hiller was back for the old timers game
and it looked as if he hasn't lost much of his pitching
abilities.
Others back in action were the manager of the team Eric
Slater, Leroy Walker, John Sinker and Bob Evans..
Lots of CNE sports
This year's Canadian National Exhibition at Toronto
which opened yesterday again offers a tremendous menu of
sports.
Almost every sport possible is included on the long list
of events. Today, Thursday is girls lacrosse tournament
will be on tap. Friday open judo championships will be held.
Saturday it's horseshoe pitching, handball, weight lifting,
drag boat races and frisbee tossing.
On the first Sunday of the CNE, sports will feature
bocce, dog swimming, karate, power lifting and ladies soft-
ball.
Tournaments for snooker,bowling,softball and baseball
continue throughout the CNE schedule.
The snooker competition will feature the two top "pool
sharks" in North America, Alex Higgins and Bill
Werbeniuk.
Top Ontario keglers will compete daily for the bowling
crown plus prizes in the Ontario Bowlers Congress tourney
that includes events for youth bowlers, blind bowlers and
senior citizens. Onlookers will be invited to join in during
lulls in the competition and expert bowlers will offer tips to
improve spectators' games,
The snooker and bowling events take place on the mez-
zanine floor of the Transportation, Recreation and Liesure
The pee wee baseball tournament involves 32 teams
from all parts of Ontario and continues from opening day
until August 29,
The Toronto Globals will be on hand to defend their title
in the Bulova watch men's softball event.

Zurich took a one run lead in the
second inning but it didn't last
long. Paul Charrette singled,

another single . from John

The first batter to the plate for
the Tigers in the second was
pitcher Jim Guenther and he
promptly hammered the ball
over the fence and the score was
tied.
Bill Schade followed with a

Denomme banged out a single.
Tom Hill singled and scored in
