July 25, to hear his proposals on
this matter, I hope that; this bit of
news will point out the need for
joining and participating in the
Exeter Board of Trade; we can
do nothing without sufficient
funds about this or any ether
matter concerning business in

we can get -to participate on this
day the bigger and better success
it will be and ' hopefully in the
future' could become one of the
Towns major events.
RODEO: — This year we are
attempting to form a better
relationship between the rodeo
committee and the Exeter Board
of Trade. As this is one of the
Town's major attractions to both
town people, people in the
surrounding area and tourists, it
would seem obvious that it would
be a particular advantage to the
business people of Exeter to co-
operate and promote this event
fully.
To encourage businesses to do
this, the Exeter Board of Trade
will give away two prizes - one of
$50 and one of $25. These prizes
will be given for a combination of
window decorations, employees'
costumes and the best general
Western atmosphere the winners'
display.
We would like to see all
businesses both in the core area
and the outlining businesses to
take part in this. The judging will
be done by three independent
people, picked by the Board of
Trade. Prizes will be alloted on
the Sunday of the rodeo. All
businesses will be welcome to
join this contest whether they are
members of the Board of Trade
or not.
CHRISTMAS PARADE: — The
Board of Trade is now for-
mulating plans to once again
have a Santa Claus parade and
Christmas promotion. The ten-
tative date for the parade is set
for December 7, this date will be
confirmed later. Once again we
are open to suggestions in
regards to the parade and
Christmas promotion.
PARKING: — As you have
probably read in the Exeter
Times Advocate the parking
committee consisting of Jon
Dinney and Emil Hendrick have
already approached town council
on this matter and were very well
received. We hope that our ef-
forts will eventually produce
some positive results.
NO LONGER A RUMOR: — A
member of the Exeter council
has been approached by an out of
town building contractor to
construct a business mall within
the town limits of Exeter, We
hope to have a meeting with the
representative of the con-

Exeter should and will have to
make over a period of the next
few years; for example, sewer
work, that will probably run a
million to a. million and a half
dollars, paving of roads which
will probably run into the
millions, plus a badly needed
sports complex, which I am sure
at the time of building will
probably come close to another
million dollars.
I think these figures certainly
point out the fact that we are
going to need a much larger tax
base than 3300 people, so that I
can see that not only the Exeter
Board of Trade but the town
council, the industrial com-
mission, service clubs and every
citizen in Exeter is going to have
to help to promote both business
and the pleasant living asonditions
we have in Exeter.
SIDEWALK SALE; — The
Exeter Board of Trade plans to
have its sidewalk sale on August
17, which is a Saturday. This day
has been questioned by some
people, however the reasoning
behind it is the fact that the
Kinsmen Club of Exeter have
their Kinfest on that Saturday
night and we thought the two
events held together would at-
tract more people, hence more
business for the merchants of
Exeter and hopefully more
people to the Kinsmen project.
We would certainly welcome
the Kinsmen setting up a booth on
the Main Street to promote their
night-titrie activity. This year we
are also trying to encourage
businesses on the fringe of Exeter
to set up displays and participate
in this sidewalk sale, to mention a
few, I can see no reason why our
local car dealers could not
display some of their vehicles
and local farm equipment
dealers could display some of
their machinery.
I would also like to see the
restaurants have a sidewalk cafe
and I might suggest to other
service clubs and church groups
that they would be welcome to
take part in this sidewalk sale
also.
We will also be raffling off a
lawn and garden tractor valued
at $400 to raise funds for the
Exeter Board of Trade, This
piece of equipment has been
generously donated by Dick
Vandergunst of Exeter Ford
Equipment Ltd. and we on the
Board of . Trade would like to
thank and commend Mr. Van-
dergunst for his generous sup-
port,
Needless to say the point is the
Dear Sir:
"We give you our money and
that's the last we hear from you."
Having been associated with
the Exeter Board of Trade pretty
well since its inception in 1961,
the above heading is one of the
most frequent expressions heard
when the members of the
executive go out and try to collect
memberships.
I would like to reverse this
expression and point out to you —
the Exeter Business People —
"That YES you do give us your
money but that is also the last we
hear from YOU",
Now, I realize that you have
appointed an executive of the
Board of Trade to run and ad-
ministrate the Board, however it
is my opinion that the more input
and participation, we can get
from all the business people in
Exeter the better o ,,erall Board
of Trade we will have. I would
like to make it fully understood
that we are readily open to any
suggestions on how to better the
Exeter Board of Trade's service
to you.
Having receives some tigures
from an ex-member of the Exeter
Planning Board, I would like to
make you aware of the fact a
government agency, having
surveyed Huron County and
projected its future for the next
ten years, pointed out that there
would probably be an overall
drop of 11 percent in Huron
County and that eventually there
would only be two major towns in
Huron County, one being
Goderich, which is quite obvious
even at this point, and one could
be, and I stress the words could
be, Exeter, however they would
have to attract more types of
industry and more people to the
Town,
I think if you look aroundwithin
a ten mile radius you will be able
to see the handwiting on the wall.
The examples that come to my
mind are Granton and Kirkton,
which if you have driven through
recently you would have noticed
several empty stores and
businesses. Now these com-
munities consist only of a very
few hundred people.
However I believe we now have
a town of a population of about
600 people beginning to have the
same problem. The town I am
referring to is Hensel'. What I am
now wondering is how long will
this trend take before it starts
affecting a town with a
population of 3300.
To make my point further I
would ask you to quickly add up
the expenditures that the Town of
Walter Rode of Listowel.

thday Mrs. Bill Stephen and Mrs.
