equipment and this meant a lot of
travelling before the children
arrived, Bob is originally from
Indonesia and she comes from
Lion's Head.
Now with two sons, Mark, 4 and
Jason, 8 months, they have
settled down here. They find the
pace in Exeter pleasantly slower
than in London and the people are
friendly.
Their household also contains
two registered Siamese cats,
Blue and Frosty which Mary
likes to show.
"It's not too much work-
showing them at all but you have
to like cats," she said.
Cat shows can make for long
days. To get a good location for
your pet's cage you have to be
there early in the morning, she
said, sometimes around 7:30.
Judging generally lasts till
evening.
In between shows she keeps her
two cats on a special diet that
consists of the occasional egg
yolk for a shiny coat,
They are groomed with a car
shammy, their ears are cleaned
and toenails clipped. She has
been showing for three years and
is now trying to decide whether to
put the one cat up for stud. Most
of the shows take place in the
Toronto area but she is planning
to attend a fall event held in
London.
Both she and her husband are
quite interested in their family
history. Bob's father has traced
the Alers family back to two
brothers who fled France during
the French Revolution.
There are very few of their
descendants, said Bob. But
whenever they are in another
city, he always looks through the
phone book. There is a family in
Winnipeg, one in Hamilton and
three in London, he said.
Both agree that having a
history hasn't changed their
present life but it's interesting.
