MONTEITH EXETER LTD 235-2121 "The best in service when you need it most!" Directing traffic becomes a major job when there are 600 people on your farm picking strawberries. That's how many people turned out to pick their own strawberries at Lovell's Berry Farm in Kippen on Dominion Day and Leonard Lovell and his family were kept mighty busy directing traffic and pickers around the farm. Strawberry season, which started at the Lovell farm three weeks ago is almost over now and the Lovells will be able to get back to their regular farming jobs. Wear a government- approved LIFE- JACKET when water skiing. Have a lookout man in your tow-boat. We'll Do the Job Right . 'YR BY ADRIAN VOS My city friend Harry, said the other day to me that my son, who wants to take over the farm some day, is in a really good position to do so. "Listen to the politicians. All parties are promising that when they get the power they will do something to make it easy for a young man to start farming," he said, It just so happened that I was reading the Canadian Country man of May 1936. A Mr. Staples writes; "What hope is there for a young man who has little capital to begin with? (to begin and continue farming). The answer must be that under present conditions there is little. Nowadays a farmer must have a considerable cash income from his operation. By no other means can he pay taxes, professional services, procure clothing and groceries, machinery, seed, The Family Night program of band music scheduled to be held on the lawn was cancelled due to weather conditions. It is hoped to have a band concert each Thursday evening during July and August and we are looking forward to a visit from Clinton Centennial sand, July 11. A group of teenage girls working under the Opportunities For Youth Program will be at the Home each Thursday and Friday during the summer and will provide recreation activities and individual contacts with the residents. buildings and fence repairs and all the other host of items that enter into farm necessaries," I could keep on quoting and it could as well have been written today about farm mortgages and credit, interest etc, SQ I told Harry all this and asked him if he still had so much confidence in promises made during an elec- tion campaign. "Well," he said, "if a problem existed already 38 years- ago, both major parties had a chance to do something about it. I begin to share your scepticism ." When Moses declared the meat of the pig unclean, he made a law that has its repercussions felt today. Many old wives tales derive from this law, There is still another part of the Bible that does have a bearing on todays farmers' image. The same Mr. Staples from the Canadian Countryman quotes from the wisest man who ever lived. Solomon, the thirty eighth chapter of Ecclesiastics, verse 25: How can he get wisdom who holdeth the plow, that glories in the goad, that drives oxen and is occupied in their labors and whose talk is of bullocks? He gives his mind to making furrows and is diligent to give the cattle fodder . . . such shall not be sought for in the public council nor sit high in the congregation; they shall not sit on the judges' seat nor understand the sentence of judgement; they cannot declare justice and judgement; they shall not be found where parables are spoken. In other words: The farmer is no more than a rather stupid hayseed. I wonder what the secret opinion is of many city people today. Lovells have' 12 acres of strawberries to pick and another 5 acres are maturing, ready to be picked next year. "After a couple of years the plants get overcrowded," Leonard Lovell said, "and the berries on the old plants lose their shape and form." So every year the Lovells tear out about five acres of old plants and have another 5 acres ready for picking which keeps their acreage about the same each year. For some people, picking berries becomes a major operation. Families come in droves during the short season, sometimes picking anywhere from 30 to 130 quarts for freezing and making pies and jams. But, some will come to pick only a couple of quarts, on their way north to the cottage and then will perhaps stop in again on their way home for another couple quarts. All the berries at Lovell s farm are picked by the customers. Leonard finds that this is the best way to do business, better than having his own pickers and marketing the berries. "This way if people get home and find that some of the berries are green or soft, then it is their own fault, not mine. Cars full of pickers start coming early in the morning on a nice day and don't stop until dusk, and this keeps the whole family pretty busy. With the help of his son Kevin, 16, Leonard directs the pickers to their rows. He keeps track of which rows have been picked by others and marks them with a metal stake. and helping the customers carryall their baskets to their cars: Lori, 12, helps out by keeping the customers stocked with quart baskets and trays to put the berries in. As the cars leave the field, Mrs. Lovell's job starts. She checks the cars and collects the money at ALWAYS A VERY PLEASANT S16111; TO WATCH YOUR EQUIPMENT WORKING CLIFF RUSSELL ESSO AGENT RR 3 Dashwood 238-2481 li.1•811•110•1=1 01 for the berries. Sometimes she is so busy that one of the kids comes down to help out and relieve the traffic jam of cars leaving. The Lovells are kept so'busy, in fact that it is a wonder that they ever have time to pick strawberries for themselves. That job is usually left up to Lori who also does some picking for relatives and friends who are unable to come themselves. G. L.
