Voyageur sends dust flying in test run places a Voyageur Very few can 't go Tirnimi-Acivoccit,„.june 27, 1974 By BILL BATTEN It was with much anticipation that we quickly accepted an in- vitation last week from Don Nor- ton to take a ride on a Voyageur Air Cushion Vehicle at the Bell Aerospace Canada plant at Grand Bend, However, our knowledge of the craft was immediately evident when the time for the ride came Thursday morning, Driving through the dense fog, we assumed that the jaunt would have to be postponed, but a quick call to Don confirmed that indeed plans were "go" as arranged. In fact, we were advised that one of the advantages of the hovercraft is that it can perform under weather conditions that leave its air, land and water com- petitors idled. One of the smaller Viking Air Cushion Vehicles manufactured at Grand Bend had been engaged in search and rescue operations along Lake Huron during the past week and at times WAS. the only craft available as the helicopters and Coast Guard cutter could not join in the activities due to weather conditions. After being joined by a half dozen other reporter types, we headed out onto the runway to meet Kim Berford, who was to pilot the huge Voyageur in our romp across the nearby fields. Any apprehension one may have had about climbing aboard the craft was quickly dispelled by Kim's obvious expertise, He calls himself an "operator", but in fact he has to have the knowledge and skills of half a dozen professions. In short, he's a pilot, driver, navigator; radio operator, radar technician, marine specialist, weather expert and a few other things required to operate such a craft on land, air, water or any combinations thereof. In a quick briefing-, Kim ex- plained that we would:be travell- ing at a height 9f four feet above the ground on a cushion of air and that he would demonstrate the, China display fat' museum During the remainder of June, and for the month of July, there is a special display of china and fine pottery at the Strathroy Middlesex Museum. Pottery making is a universal art, but characteristic forms, techniques and styles of decoration have developed in different areas. Examples from three con- tinents are on display now, in a rainbow of colours. Among those who have been generous enough to lend pieces are: Charlotte Hanley, Rodney Baker, Shirley Keck, Mrs. Louis Keck, Mrs. Kathy Kergillian, Mrs. Gladys Thomas, Mrs. Jim Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. J. Legg, Sr., Mrs. Amy McKellar, Mrs.. C. Cahill, Mr. and Mrs, W. Bellairs, Mrs, J. Mussel], Mrs. R. Pincombe. This display, as well as the others, are open Monday to Friday, from I to 5 p.m., or Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. The lace curtains, donated by the late Mrs. Basil McCandless, have added a pleasing period touch to the parlour of the museum. A donation of curtains, perhaps velvet, for the dining room would be appreciated, if anyone has some from an older house, which are not in use. During the talk that Dr. Clara Thomas, of York University, gave at the museum last April, she mentioned, in commenting on the architectural style of the museum building, that the front porch gave it distinction. Unfor- tunately, that porch is in need of immediate repair, and the museum board is having difficul- ty in finding someone to under- take the job, but it is hoped that the problem will be resolved soon. Bailin Around — Continued from Page 4 task of slipping between the rocks. Now, with only a couple of deep gashes across our mid-section, we can proudly point to our conquering of "Fatman's Misery", The caves are an, interesting spot for a family expedition and are adjoined by a children's playground to keep the youngsters amused while their older cohorts attempt to regain their breath and. get the cir- culation going again in tired legs. The view from the top is magnificent, to say the least, as one gazes down across Collingwood and enjoys a view of a picturesque Georgian Bay. It may not equal the distance one can see from the new CN tower in Toronto, but there's no smog curling up around you to smother the view of the wide expanse of Ontario that lies at your. feet. That fresh mountain air is also invigorating at 9:00 a.m. on a cool Sunday morning. The drive home along Georgian Bay and then down through the Beaver Valley also affords one of some breath-taking scenery. We enjoyed it so much, that by the time you get around to reading this, the Batten crew may be on their way back up to the Huronia District to take in more of the sights. If so, we'll have a report on that for next week. maneuverability of the craft in our short jaunt. The four feet above ground bit appears somewhat misleading in that the cab of the Voyageur is about 20 feet in the air, Trying not to kick qny dents in the $1.3 million vehicle, we scrambled aboard and took our place in one of the four seats behind the two reserved for Kim and his assistant for the trip, Al Foley, With mechanic Pat Zdunich getting things readied below, Kim and Al started to go through the intricate "pre-f light" testing of the controls. We should point out that the controls are not exactly those you'd find in your standard automobile. The control panel appears to be akin to the home base for the computer system of some giant corporation and there were enough switches and but- tons to keep a room of kindergarten kids busy for a week. However, while we anticipated an hour's delay while the pilot got things ready, it wasn't long Aeg. $18.49 1.44 Nylon Backpack Light aluminum frame, padded straps. Olive color. Zippered. before the hum of the two giant motors had the propellers whirl- ing at a feverish pitch and we were soon lumbering across the runway towards the nearby field. As we picked up speed the long grass fishtailed behind from the force of the air, but a close look proved that no damage was being done to the crop. Here was another advantage of the Air Cushion Vehicle. Tests have shown that the low pressure will not even effect the delicate ecology of the tundra country of Canada's Northwest Territories, one of the major market areas for Bell Aerospace. * Kim had advised prior to take- off that he would show us some of the maneuvres that could be ac- complished in a hovercraft and he was soon putting his words into action. We were going north and in about the same time as it takes to say it, we were heading south. He repeated this about-turn stuff for about as long as we cared and then headed west across the runway towards Highway 81, •••"•,..,•:•,3•"'" "That's net the sort of flitch. you'd want to drive your car through," he noted nonchalantly as as we headed for a five-foot deep ditch in the nearby 004 The •nose ,of the craft dipped. and immediate thoughts of Un- paid life insurance policies flash, ed across our mind, but with only a slight sinking sensation, we were soon .across the ditch and heading back for a rerun, Shooting gaps is another of the advantages 'of the Voyageur as it can skip-across tee floes without much hesitation and can handle. the uneven terrain that would completely bait most land vehicles.
