The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1974-06-13, Page 15Dump gate
is wrecked
Exeter council decided this
week to set up a meeting with
officials from the ministry of the
environment to check the local
dump in Hay Swamp,
The ministry, in a letter read at
a February 4 CoUneir meeting,
had requested the meeting in "late spring.”
No action was taken on the
meeting at that time and most
members had forgotten about the
request.
Councillor Bob Simpson
brought the matter up two weeks
ago and the letter was brought
out again this week by Clerk Eric
Carscadden.
Simpson suggested the meeting
not be held too soon, because the
dump "is an awful mess,"
This prompted another
discussion on the controls at the
dump with many members in-
dicating some stronger action
was required to keep people from
dumping in places where they
shouldn't.
There were again many
complaints about non-residents
using the dump.
Mayor Jack Delbridge advised
that someone had recently
backed a truck into the gate and
had bent it almost in half to gain
access,
There was a suggestion that a
stronger gate be put on the
facility and no one but the gar-
bage collectors be allowed into
the property.
It was finally agreed that
Simpson should arrange the
meeting with the ministry (when
the dump is cleaned up) and to
also discuss the need for better
controls with the dump at-
tendant.
Council also agreed to request
more information in the periodic
reports submitted by the animal
control officer, Harvey Hillman.

Exeter will undertake
two road repair jobs
BIKE RODEO WINNERS — The students scoring the highest points in
their divisions at the Mt. Carmel Separate School last Wednesday
were: back left, Paul Brannan, junior boys; Joyce Nesbett, senior girls;
front left, Liam Brennan, primary boys; Jackie Garnhum, primary girls.
Missing from the picture is Mary Jo McCann, junior girls,
On the recommendation of the
roads and drains committees,
Exeter council agreed this week
to call tenders for the recon-
struction of Riverside Drive.
Storm and sanitary sewers will
also be installed,
1A1 it al 3 i11,
Estimated cost of the project is
$75,000, which also includes a
portion of the sewer being in-
stalled on Hillcrest.
Road committee chairman Ted
Wright explained that council
had talked about the Riverside
project for three years and also
noted that it would provide an
outlet for the mobile home park
planned in that area by Len Veri.
Tenders for the project are to
be opened on June 24,
In his report, Wright said
members of the committee had
viewed several areas where
residents had reported drain and
road problems,
He said most of problems did
not appear to be as great as the
people indicated.
However, he did
some problems
corrected in the
future.
Council gave approval to R, B.
Williams to hook into the sanitary
sewer at the corner of Huron and
Edward St. Mr. Williams ohs
the house at the south-east coifner
of the intersection,
Approval was also given to the
road committee recommendation
that some maintenance be
carried out on Wellington St,
West.
Wright noted that the street
was in bad shape in some places
and suggested the shoulders be
dug out and filled with gravel.
Holes in the pavement will also
be patched.
He said the work would result
in a wider street and would
prolong its life.
No estimate of the cost was
given.
During the debate, Reeve
Derry Boyle said council should
have accepted the offer from
county council a few years ago to
take over ownership of
Wellington St.
