Plan power
plant study
A committee has been formed
in Huron county by commodity
and urban organizations to study
the impact of a power plant on the
county. The committee,
representing thousands of
families, plans to look into a
possible contribution to increased
food prices, the effect on
agriculture and the ecological
impact.
At the organizational meeting
Thursday, in the board room of
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, it was
decided to concentrate on fact
finding first, so a convincing case
could be put forward either for or
against a power plant in Huron's
agricultural area.
The committee expressed the
wish that organizations and in-
dividuals who are interested and
who wish to contribute some
input contact the committee.
Adrian Vos of Blyth was elected
chairman.
Information on
marketing boar)*
By ADRIAN VOS
Farm and Country magazine
gives us some interesting figures
about agency marketing
boards. The Consumers
Association and the Food Prices
Review Board have been critical
of these boards, for a long time,
claiming that they restrict
production. The figures however
are somewhat different. When
the tobacco board began
operations in 1958 sales were 176
million pounds.
This year's crop is expected to
be 250 million pounds. That's
restriction? Then the bean board.
When they started, production
was 822,000 one-hundred pound
bags. Now it's 1,843,297 one-
hundred pound bags. Restric-
tions? The chicken producers
have been attacked repeatedly
for the quota system, but when
they began operations in 1965 the
production was 175 million
pounds, while last year it was up
to 275 million pounds. One can
readily see that orderly
marketing produces more, not
less.
After the famous heart tran-
splant surgeon Dr. Michael
deBakey from the USA debunked
the theory that fat causes heart
failure, comes the news, as
related in Macleans Magazine,
that two Canadian heart spe-
cialists, Drs, Meyer Friedman
and Roy H. Roseman, have come
to the same conclusion,
"Coronary heart disease almost
never occurs before the age of 70,
regardless of the fatty foods
eaten, etc." They claim it is the
type of person who is insecure,
etc. I hope by gosh that our MD's
will read their book.
"As Christians we must have a
concern for the right to use all our
resources even if it means
governments who seem to show
an arrogance for the rights,
wishes and concerns of the
Canadian people," says Hurons'
Anglican BishopDavid Ragg,
The Bishop spoke these words
in connection with the disap-
pearance of farm land for, "high-
ways, sprawlings subdivisions or
corrirors for hydro power lines."
"The land that God gave us for
safe-keeping, the land that He
gave us so that we may feed His
world is treated as a saleable
commodity. The poorer lands are
left because they are more dif-
ficult to handle,"
