Each new tender is required to state the intended use of the property. It was moved by Cliff Abbott and seconded by Larry Hotson that the village approve Lucan Hydro Commission request for a bank loan of up to $6,000 for their operating expenses this year, if necessary. Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Davidson requested council do something about the drainage problem on their property on Albert St. Mr. Two groups• of: area--students will be working on summer projects this year under the federal government's Oppor- tunites for Youth program. Camp C.A.R.E., a day care program to be held at the J.A.D. McCurdy Public Schodl in Huron Park will be going for its third year with a budget of $4,230. Steve Wuerth of Exeter who's been with the project since it started said the money will only cover the cost of wages for the five people involved. Staff members this year will be Elaine Bapti, Randy Gilfillan, Kathleen Gielen and Lynn Farquhar. Money for any projects or field trips and materials for crafts will come from donations from local industries and from fund-raising campaigns. Steve said the program this summer should be basically the same as last year. Children from 4 to 13 years will be able to attend from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. Forms will be sent out through the school and no registration fee is required. Some of the events held last year for the children included a bus trip to Boblo Island, a campout on a local farm, a walkathon and even a Christmas celebration. The second OFY grant goes to the Zurich area for a study on the historical impact of mechanization on the rural en- vironment. Cost of the project will be $5,110 and six students will be em- ployed. They will be Cynthia Gunn, Randy Dietrich, Cathy De Davidson said land fill from recent construction had been bulldozed onto his property, causing water to collect in his backyard after rain. Reeve Ivan Hearn said technically the matter did not concern council because it was on private property, but council decided to take a look at the situation. Reeve Hearn also indicated he would talk to the Lucan OPP detachment about recent van- dalism in the village. Council was informed that the Department of Highways would only subsidize part of the Cost for Jong, ehris-Daniel,'L'eSlie'Hogg and Elaine Baechler, Joe Wooden, principal at South Huron District High School and Prof. John Hart, head of Com- puter Science Data Centre at the University of Western Ontario, are to be advisers. A computer terminal is to be set up in Zurich that will tie in with computers at Western. All data will be fed into the terminal to try and get an accurate picture of what life was like before mechanization. The students will do their own computer programming. They will also be interviewing many of the older people in the community about their recollections of how their lives were affected by technology. Information gathered by the summer study will be used by mechanologists. They are people who study technology and its social effects to help man learn how to control it. CHEERLEADERS The Exeter Kinsmen club is sponsoring a cheerleading contest for elementary schools, Saturday. The competition will get un- derway at 2 p.m. at the new gym at South Huron District High School. Schools will be par- ticipating from Hanover, Sebringville, Ecole St. Marie at $t. Joseph and Exeter's Precious Blood. The South Huron leaders recent champions of the Huron-Perth Conference will be on hand to demonstrate and do the judging, sidewalks and paving on Market Street. At last month's meeting, the councillors had accepted the tender of Frank Van Bussel & Sons for $24,975,60, subject to the Department's approval. But it will only subsidize up to $23,979. So a new resolution was passed that council still accept the Van Bussel tender and assume responsibility for the rest of the money, not subsidized by the Department of Highways. Reeve Hearn said no action would be taken on the proposed amalgamation plans for Mid- dlesex County, made public last month, until meetings had been held with Biddulph and McGillivray townships. A letter was read from the Federated Women's Institute requesting council to ask Bell Telephone to include London yellow pages in Lucan telephone books. The books now only contain' yellow pages lot' Weary and the surrounding villages: Council decided to file the letter until next month. In the mean- time the councillors will ask around and see if local merchants have any strong feelings on the subject. • 41. T alTE DRIVE-IN THEATRE GRAND BEND Box office open at 8:00 FRI. & SAT.
