This is the opportunity everyone has to meet Exeter's new recreation director and talk about your favorite sport or recreation, It will be a very informal gathering with the emphasis on getting acquainted with Jim, We have found Jim to be a very enthusiastic and co- operative person and know he will be glad to discuss all aspects of the recreational field with everyone. We would hope residents of all ages will take advantage of this opportunity to talk to the new rec director and let him know what they are interested in. If unable to make tonight's get-together anyone will be welcome at Jim's office at the arena at anytime to air your concern about recreation. An application for a Youth in Action grant which was one of the first moves made by the new rec director has been turned down by the provincial government. A grant was requested to sponsor a minor baseball program for the summer months. Jim McKinlay has in- dicated he will attempt to go ahead with his plan on probably a smaller scale. The ball program is basically aimed at recruitment and instruction for adults to provide adequate coaching methods. Games for women • We mentioned several weeks ago that the Western On- tario Summer Games were scheduled in June. They will be held in Waterloo from June 20 to 23 inclusive. Jim McKinlay tells us he has contacted South Huron District High School and the two town elementary schools and expects some entries for this ladies competition, es- pecially in track and field. Included in the Summer Games schedule is a sym- posium geared to light some of the areas of study for the female involved in sport. The topics will include training and nutritional re- quirements, promotion and media relationships, sports medicine, humanism in sport, leadership, the contemporary female athlete and motivation. The Summer Games competitions will include softball, track and field, cycling, sailing, basketball, golf, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, fencing, judo, field hockey, water polo, netball, orienteering, and waterskiing. A big change In five years a lot of changes can be made in a person's life and this is certainly true as far as Denny McLain is con- cerned. We were one of the some 900 fans who watched McLain officially open the Intercounty. senior baseball season in London 'Friday night. In the 1968 season, McLain won 30 games with the Detroit Tigers and won the Cy Young award. Friday night in pitching four innings he was hit reasonably hard by the Kitchener Panthers although giving up only two runs. - The big right hander is certainly overweight and couldn't be expected, to be in mid-season form. His perfor- manCe on the mound was overshadowed by his batting prowess. Never known for his hitting abilities with the Tigers, McLain doubled on his first two appearances at the plate in each 'case on the first pitch thrown to him. All in all Denny's clowning around kept the fans in- terested in the game despite the fact it lasted almost three hours. After his pitching turn, McLain finished the game at shortstop. H-P ready to go By the time this issue hits the street, inter-club trading ip the National hockey league has come to an end for this season. Several negotiations in the area Huron-Perth in- termediate baseball league have also been going on. The Dashwood Tigers after many rumours of their dis- banding will be back in action along with the Zurich Flyers to provide keen rivalry with the Exeter Expos. We learned of a couple of trades over the weekend. Barry Baynham and Bill Fairbairn who played with the Ex- pos last year are now performing for the London Dukes fast- ball team. After Thursday's schedule meeting in Clinton officials of the Expos traded the rights for Baynham and Fairbairn for the same privileges for former Tigers Brian Bestard and John Hayter, Hayter, a top shortstop for the Tigers is now playing junior Intercounty ball in Stratford and Bestard is out of the district because of his employment. So if any of the four players return to the area this summer their new Clubs will have the right to negotiate. In another off the cuff deal, the Exeter Expos have released Rick Schilbe to play with his hometown Zurich club, In return the Expos will receive Zurich's first draft choice or similar considerations. on the serious side the Huron-Perth league is ready to operate with six teams in a regular schedule and a seventh in exhibition games. Joining Dashwood, Exeter arid Zurich in regular league play will be Clinton, Thorndale and Arva. A strong club in OBA play in recent years from Corunna will play each of the H-P clubs in a home and home exhibi- tion series in addition to playing 40 games in their Own grouping. The Huron-Perth teams are involved in a sort of reduc- ed schedule. Dashwood and Arva will play the other teams on only two occasions for a total of 10 games and the other four teams will have a schedule of 16 games. MIXED INDIVIDUAL WINNERS — Trophies were presented Saturday Wells, Brian Sanders, Al Neal and Clay Murray, Front, Linda Bower, to the Exeter mixed• league bowlers who came up with the high single, Doris Goldsmith, Betty Campbell, Brenda Budd and Marj Samis. Miss- triples and averages. Back, left, Norm Koehler, Bob Reynolds, Fred ing was Ruth Durand. T-A photo Combines win over Exeter In an exhibition juvenile baseball game played Thursday night •in Dashwood, the Dash- wood-Crediton-Zurich Combines downed Exeter by a score of 12-5. The result was decided in the second inning when the Combines scored 11 times. Bill Hodge led the winners batting attack with a single and double in the big second frame. Other base hits were infield hits by Ron Funston and Roger Fink- beiner. The rally was helped by seven bases on balls issued by a variety of Exeter hurlers. The other Combine marker came in the fifth' when Kevin Bestard was safe on an error and scored on a single from the bat of Pete Wuerth. The first four Exeter runs came in the seventh inning on seven walks without the aid of a hit. Crossing the plate were Noel Skinner, Kevin Nixon, Paul Brooks and Brian Taylor. In the Exeter eighth, Noel Skinner walked and was able to score on two sacrifices and a fielder'S choice, The only Exeter hits were collected by Rob Dickey, Noel Skinner and Perry Stover. Pat Bedard, Kevin Bestard and Larry Clarke shared mound duties for the winners while Rob Dickey, Kevin Nixon, Paul Brooks, John Wuerth, Bill Wilson, Perry Stover and Brian Taylor worked on the hill for Exeter.
