Sure, people had their reasons for not going but if just a few more couples had showed up it might have been at least worthwhile, Maybe in the future a few people may become interested and even read the scores if they get put in, As for the players, and people who are presently trying to help, we hope you take an interest soon, Paul Brooks Pose b Times-Advocate, May 16, 1974 1118111110"1"11111111111111111141IIIIIIIIIIIIIII1111111111111111111011111111111111111M1101111111!pill1111111111111111111 FOR AI-L. GOOD SPORTS By ROSS Haugh. ,4111C1,•1,11 Welcome, We would like to say welcome to Exeter's new recrea- tion director Jim McKinlay who is one of the busiest men in town these days. Jim is actually in his second week on the job but has also been occupied with moving his family to this area. He is presently living at Huron Park. We have had only a chance to talk to. Jim for a few minutes but find him very enthusiastic about his new posi- tion and ready to co-ordinate all recreational activities in town. One of the first things the new rec head did after assum- ing his post was make application for a Youth in Action grant. Jim told us he expects to have Word this week on the grant which if successful would provide for a minor baseball program which is desperately lacking in Exeter, Emphasis on the ball program would be in providing teaching to coaches by the way of clinics. Both boys and girls would be included in the minor ball program. All players from eight to twelve years of age would be eligible and would compete in the same category. Operation would be at the house league level with no age divisions. Everyone would play in the same category with instruction the feature. All personnel for the swimming and playground programs have been hired. Donna Doidge will be back for her third year as supervisor of the swimming program and Anne Pinder with two years of experience will head the playground activities. Under McKinlay's direction the playground program is expected to have a little more zip than it has had in the past couple of years. The wading pool at Victoria Park will ag• ain be in opera- tion for the smaller boys and girls and older youngsters will enjoy their summer recreation at Community Park. Two meetings called recently by Ron Bogart in an attempt to form a local recreational softball league have brought very little results. Only five persons showed up at the first meeting. If the league does get going the emphasis will be on recreation and having fun. Teams will be seldcted in the hockey house league fashion by drawing names out of a hat. Any men over the age of 16 are eligible and urged to sign up. How well you play the game doesn't really matter. The desire to have fun and get the exercise which so many of us need and don't get are the prime requisites. Anyone wishing to participate in this league should call Ron Bogart at 235-0847. Smaller league One of the oldest intermediate baseball leagues in the province of Ontario seems to be at a low ebb. The Huron- Perth league may operate this year with only four teams. At the moment it looks like Clinton, Arva, Thorndale and the Exeter Expos are the only teams ready to face open- ing day. The local Expos were scheduled to hold their first workout this week, but at the time of writing it looks as if the weatherman may confine activities to exercises in the arena. One of the strongest clubs in the league in the last decade the Dashwood Tigers appear to have fallen by the wayside. Retirement of a couple of the older players and the mov- ing of some of the younger team members has forced this move. One of the Tigers' top performers in recent years shortstop John Hayter is presently working out with the Stratford Intercounty juniors. Slow pitch interest The newly formed slow pitch softball league organized by the Usborne Recreation committee has stirred up plenty of interest, The game of slow pitch which puts the emphasis on hit- ting and fielding has been very successful in London in the last couple of years. Usborne officials tell us they are planning a four team league. To qualify one must be at least 25 years or more. This type of league gives everyone regardless of their ball abilities a chance to gain much needed exercise and the fun which goes along with this type of sport. The team rosters will be filled by drawing the names of players from a hat. In slow pitch the ball must be delivered to the plate in an are of anywhere from four to ten feet. While interest has been high there is still room for a few more players. Anyone interested should call Bill Morley at 229-8236 as soon as possible. Greys, where are you? The Exeter Greys girls softball team is back in business and playing this year in the South Perth ladies league. One problem has been encountered by the club. About four of the team's uniforms have not been returned and are needed by this team's personnel. Anyone having a uniform left from previous years is asked to contact coach Bill Brock at 235-0323, r111•••••••••••••••••••••••111.11MINIMINIIMEMMOMIMIXIMMINM.IMINIMMI .. Exeter RAP Committee invites you to Meet James McKinlay (Newly Appointed Recreation Director) SOUTH HURON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA Thurs., May 30 8.00 p.m. Come and discuss your sports and leisure time activities with him. SPECIAL INVITATION TO ALL SPORTS CLUBS, SERVICE CLUBS AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE SOUTH HURON AREA Refreshments Will Be Served There are only a few men in this town whore good enough to lend some of their spare time for the recreation of the youngsters and teenagers in this town. flow much time would it take for a few people to become in- terested enough to even go and watch their kid play? Not too much! I have heard on occasion that " hardball will be out of Exeter in a few years." Oh it will, but only if people show as little interest in it as they have in the past few years. Sure you have to work but so do all the other people who at least try to do something about the situation. Just recently our new ball diamond was turned down. Why? This place needs a hardball diamond. Minor baseball players would be more than happy to help raise as much money as they could. Even at home games hardly any people show up. For the away games, parents send their kids to the ball park and let some other parent drive and take the responsibility for their kids. To these people minor baseball is babysitting service. Last year thereprobably would not have been a bantam team if it weren't for one certain in- dividual. I don't know but I hope things will change. People have done nothing but take a negative attitude towards hardball. The readers write:. Lack of ball support
