Idea of local group
Petition rutabaga board
BEATTY WATER SYSTEM
A petition was launched by
rutabaga growers to set up a
marketing board in Ontario to
promote the turnips.
Sixteen rutabaga growers
signed the petition when it was
introduced at a meeting at
Stratford's coliseum of about 50
persons connected with the in-
dustry in the province.
The petition will go to the
Ontario Farm Products
Marketing Board for con-
sideration. Frank Vanneste of
Lucan expects it will be early fall
before a marketing board is
established - if one is to be
established.
The idea for the board was first
raised a few months ago by the
Huron-Middlesex Rutabaga
Growers Association, the largest
group of exporters in the
province.
The petition will be circulated
throughout Ontario in the next
few months and Mr. Vanneste
said 15 percent of the mem-
bership about 45 growers - must
be in favor of forming a
marketing board before any
further discussion can take place.

Huron-Middlesex group said if
the marketing board is formed it
would serve as a promotional
organization for the industry.
Sales and exports would be
increased and the growers would
be forced to pay more towards
the actual promotion.
At the moment the growers pay
little in comparison to the
shippers towards the cost of
promotion.
Last year the Ontario
Rutabaga Council operated with
a budget of $31,000, of which the
shippers paid $20,000 and the
growers $500.
Chairman of the council, Ted
Chudleigh of Milton, said the
growers should be paying equal
amounts to the Rutabaga
Council. The reason for the dif-
ference is that the shippers have
the money deducted at the time of
shipping and the growers only
contribute voluntarily.
Under a marketing board
system the 350 growers in the
province would be ordered to pay
a certain amount to the board.
Mr. Vanneste estimated as
much as $40,000 extra would be
created by forming a marketing
board.
"This would give us the op-
portunity to hire a full-time
person to travel around,
especially in the US and talk to
buyers and wholesalers and
increase our sales," said Mr.
Chudleigh.
He expected that if the
marketing board did become a
reality, the Ontario Rutabaga
Council would cease to exist.
He said the marketing board
would simply be an extension of
promotional service, done by the
council.Mr. Chudleigh agreed the
marketing board was a good idea
and should be started, if only to
get rutabaga growers paying
their "fair share" towards the
promotion of their product.
Lewis Thomson, a producer
from Stratford, and chairman of
the Oxford and District Turnip
Growers Association, was not one
of the 16 to sign the petitionWed-
nesday. And he won't be signing
the petition.
He said he did. not see any
benefit to the rutabaga growers
in forming a marketing board.
"If there's a lot of turnips one
year you can't order people to
buy them. If they don't want to
buy them there's no law that says
they must.
"And if there is a shortage
another year, they will all be sold
for a higher price and everyone
will be happy. I just don't see
where a board will benefit us,"
said Mr. Thomson, who is also
chairman of the turnip section of
the Ontario Food and Vegetable
Growers Association,
Mr. Thomson said the main
concern of the growers was the
fact they were selling their
rutabagas at two cents a pound,
chain stores are purchasing them
at four to five cents a pound and
turning round and charging 12 to
15 cents for them retail,
"But there's nothing we can do
about it, and even a marketing
board couldn't do anything about
it," he said.

HURON PARK
The smelt were running at
Turnbulls Grove this past
weekend. About 150 pounds of the
tasty tidbits were brought home
Saturday night to the Park.
Among them was one with two
tails. Somewhere along the way,
two of the little devils flipped
themselves loose (possibly with
outside aid) but were recaptured
in Kennedy's Kennels by a
London member of the local
fishing club.
Cadets parade
Sunday afternoon the Huron
Middlesex Cadet Corps paraded
in the Recreation Center at
Huron Park. As each parade
commences, enthusiasm in-
creases.
Highlighting the afternoon was
each cadet's chance to fire live
ammunition (22) on the outdoor
small bore range. Even though
the wind was strong it could not
deter the future marksmen in the
group. Hunters beware. It won't
be long before your sons or
daughters will be teaching you
how to handle and shoot a
weapon.
For those cadets requiring
transportation to and from Lucan
or Exeter on Sundays, a bus will
be provided at the following
times and locations: pick up at
the Lucan Legion, 12:15 p.m.;
pick up at the Exeter Legion,
12:45 p.m.; leave Huron Park,
4:15 p.m.
The above schedule may vary
due to unforseen weather or other
circumstances beyond our
control.
In last weeks column I men-
tioned that the passing off parade
was to be held on May 5. It will
