EXETER 235-2261
The Exeter Waxers came close
to pulling off a major upset in the
Lis towel novice tournament
during the spring break,
Entered in the "B" class, the
local lads were nipped 3-2- by St.
Marys for the consolation trophy.
The stone town crew had been
expected to walk away with the
silverware without too much
trouble, but they had to go all out
to eliminate the Waxers.
St. Marys scored in the first
frame and Exeter captain John
Kernick got that one back, only to
have St. Marys take another one-
goal lead by the end of the middle
frame.
Early in the third period,
Kernick connected for his second
tally to knot the count, and the
score remained that way until St.
Marys fired the winner with four
minutes remaining.
Exeter made it to the
consolation final by beating
Hanover 2-1 in their second game
of the tournament. Captain John
Kernick scored both tallies in
that contest as well.
In the tournament opener, the
Exeter crew were drubbed 10-0
by Beamsville, who went on to
win the "B" championship.
Exeter put the first two scores
into their own net and couldn't
get untracked after that
disastrous beginning.
The local team was short-
staffed with several youngsters
home due to illness.

Colonials lead South Huron final
The final regular schedule statistics released this week
by Nick Martin for the Ontario Hockey Association Con-
tinental Senior league are rather interesting.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets while finishing third in the
league standings scored the most goals of any team with
203, 12 more than the league leading Stratford Perths.
In the goals against department the Jets were fourth
with 140 goals behind Durham, Stratford and London.
The Jets placed four players in the top seven scorers in
the league. Playing coach Jack Nairn finished in second spot
with 70 points, six behind Brian Hind of Bothwell.
Jamie Robb was in third place with 65 points, Rick
Fifield was fifth with 50 points and Jacques Cousineau
finished in seventh spot with 52 points.
In addition to finishing in the runner-up spot, Nairn was
tops in the league's assist department with 51 and Rick
Fifield led the goal getters with 34,
Cousineau and Fifield each scored nine power play goals
during the season and had one less than Brian Hind of
Bothwell.
Fifield was also runner-up in game winning goals and
the number of hat tricks achieved with four each.
On the defensive side of the ledger Bill Bourne of the
Jets was the leader in penalties. Bourne set two league
records, that of 143 minutes during the season and 36
minutes in penalties in one game against Woodstock on
March 1.
The number of penalties picked up by the goal tenders
was rather amazing. The Durham Huskies netminders were
proficient in getting the nod from the referees although this
isn't unusual.
Veteran Gord Becker was up to his usual old tricks and
received a whopping 30 minutes in penalties. His net min-
ding cohort in Durham Brian Caley was assessed 17
minutes. Lorne Daer of the Jets picked up only six minutes.
Another bouquet which can be thrown to Brian Hind of
Bothwell who led the scorers was the fact he received only
three minor penalties during the full schedule of 30 games.
The least penalized of the L-I Jets was Jacques
Cousineau with 18 minutes picked up in 31 games.
As a team Durham knocked off the most penalties with
796 minutes and the Jets were next in line with 623 minutes.
A good year for the Bruins
Despite the fact they were picked to finish as low as
third and fourth by most of the experts in the. National
league this year, the Boston Bruins clinched the eastern
division pennant Sunday night with two weeks still remain-
ing in the schedule.
With an abundance of hindsight, lots of reasons can be
given for the success of the Boston club. They range all the
way from coach Bep Guidolin to the excellent goal tending
by Gilles Gilbert and Ross Brooks, the high'scoring of Phil
Esposito and remarkable performances by a fine crop of
rookies.
The Shipka Colonials have
taken a one game lead in their
best-of-seven South Huron in-
termediate hockey league final
with the Zurich Flyers.
Dennis Morrissey scored for
the Colonials in overtime to give
his club a 5-4 win Tuesday night
and a three games to two lead in
the series.

maine would like to

ness in arranging

success,
and Rick Schilbe were the
scorers in quick succession.
Getting one assist each were Ron
Desjardine, Kevin McKinnon,
Jim Ramer and Bob Farquhar.
Three more goals came in the
balance of the second period.
Larry Laye scored for Shipka on
passes from Dennis Morrissey
and Stan Lovie and Bob Merner
replied for Zurich with help from
Randy Decker,
Jim Guenther relayed a pass
from Bill Hoffman into the Zurich
net to complete the middle frame
scoring.
In the third period each team
scored only one goal. Kevin
McKinnon was the Flyers
marksman on a pass from Bob
Merner and Dennis Morrissey
scored unassisted for Shipka.
Friday night, the Zurich club
took a 2-1 lead after the first 20
minutes of play and never looked
back and increased their lead to
6-3 after two periods.
Ron Desjardine converted a
pass from Rick Grenier at 1.40 to
put the Flyers ahead and
defenceman Jack Stanlake
knotted the count on an
unassisted effort less than five
minutes later.
At 8.40 Rick Schilbe put Zurich
in front to stay as he put the puck
behind Joe Arnold in the Shipka
net. Kevin McKinnon assisted.
Three Zurich goals in 45
seconds near the midway point of
the second period decided the
outcome of the game.
Ron Desjardine, Pat Bedard
The regular schedule in the
third draw of the season of the
Exeter ladies curling club has
been completed.

runner-up foursome was skipped

her group to the Wednesday
championship. Tied for second
place were rinks skipped by
Helen Burton and Gerry Gregus.
Heading the Thursday curlers
was the rink skipped by Jan
Lovell. Placing second was
Audrey McDonald.
