from the Department of
Education. They prove I have
attained grades 9 and 10 Math,
English and French.
Education means more than a
slip of paper, though.
According to the dictionary,
"education is the systematic
development and cultivation of
the mind and other natural
powers. It begins in the nursery,
continues through school, and
also through life, whether we will
it or not."
Perhaps the time-worn cliche
"experience is the best teacher"
will never become outdated.
Last week I paid my tribute to
the little red schoolhouse. This
week I've been contemplating my
other forms of education,
I avoided the hustle and bustle
of high school. Instead I studied a
correspondence course in the
quiet privacy of my home.
Of course, the latter method of
study contains benefits as well as
disadvantages.
It offers an alternative for
students who cannot attend
regular classes. If a worker
wants to further his education, he
can mould a correspondence
course to fit his schedule.
Similarly a housewife can study
while maintaining a home,
The student works at his own
speed without pressure from
teachers or competition from
classmates. As a result, his sense
of responsibility develops. When I
felt lazy, for example, I couldn't
depend on a teacher to prod me, I
had to prod myself.
Facing a textbook, a writing
pad, and a stack of envelopes
alone can be frustrating.
Explanations sometimes lose
effectiveness when delayed in the
mail. I don't envy the instructors,
though. Communicating ideas to
students hundreds of miles away
requires a unique skill.
My major complaint concerned
a time consuming ritual. Each
sheet of answers included a

heading in which my name and
address, the name of the subject,
the grade, and the lesson number
had to be written.I understood the
necessity for the routine;
nevertheless it was tedious, When
I began spelling my name in-
correctly, I decided I needed a
vacation.
My vacation continued for
seven years.
Then I enrolled in a part-time
English course at Clinton's
Conestoga College. This proved
to be one of my most rewarding
decisions. After a few weeks, I
recognized the two important
ingredients that were missing
from my correspondence studies
- association with other people
and a purpose.
Each student follows his own
schedule. However,there are
ample opportunities for sharing
and comparing ideas. It's also
encouraging to have an in-
structor seated at a desk 25 feet
away rather than 200 miles.
I now realize I studied by
correspondence only because it
seemed the logical thing to do. On
the other hand, I enrolled at
Conestoga with a goal - to develop
my writing interest and ability.
Recently I received a cer-
tificate from Contestoga College
stating that I have successfully
completed the work for grade 12
English. I also possess letters

from Huntsville, where they had
lived since their marriage. They
are originally from Toronto.
Mrs. Shapter worked at
Canadian General Electric until
1970. She would like to start
working again, probably part-
time.
She is in the choir and the UCW
at Hensall United Church. Her
husband will probably take a job
there too, as both are very active
in the church.
Mrs. Shapter has also joined
the Women's Institute.
She likes Hensall very much,
and says she was surprised to
make friends so quickly; "The
people are very warm and
friendly."
Mrs. Shapter was "delighted"
to come to Hensall, naming a
more pleasant climate as the
main reason. She is "looking
forward to an early spring",
when she plans to start cycling
again.
She also enjoys travelling, and
has made several trips to the
West Coast. She hopes to go East
next summer.
