Jackpot up for shooters At the Jr. D. home games the "Shoot-er-ama" is nowover $40.00 and is awaiting a jackpot winner. Recently Gerald Spruyt, who suffered a broken leg in a Juvenile Game, had his ticket drawn. As Gerald is still on crutches, Cecil Nickles, who suffered a broken arm in a Midget game, took the shot for him. Cecil shot cast and all, and collected a $2.00 payoff for Gerald. Cecil, meanwhile, has been playing both Juvenile and midget hockey with the cast still on and has not stopped scoring, The ' juvenile's Brian Noyes continues to play with a broken thumb. Dave Smith was voted the top Lucan player in the Parlshill- Lucan Juvenile Game and as a result, received a hockey stick (not over the head)! The girl's team played their first game ,Friday night at Hockeyland and suffered a 6.1 defeat. Marlene Fevery scored the Lucan goal and some tend to think Lucan might have won had not the London team worn figure skates, What do they have to say about their defeat at the hands of the Lucan Atoms? Oink! Oink! PARTICIPATING PHARMACY Ministry of Health Ontario CONSUMER Buy-LINE Ontario Watch out for these Consumer gimmicks Ontario consumers lose thousands of dollars annually through various gimmicks and tricks used by unethical merchants and con artists selling everything from pots and pans to magazine subscriptions. Most of these gyps and gimmicks are avoidable, but gullible and unwary consumers keep getting caught time and time again. Although there are various laws designed to protect you, the consumer, the best protection you have is your own aware- ness of the laws and knowledge of the tricks used by unethi- cal salesmen. Knowing the consumer vocabulary is one step towards being a wise consumer. Consumer Vocabulary V1V "Free" is one of the most misused words in the consumer vocabulary. A car dealer recently advertised 200 gallons of "free" gasoline with any new car purchase. One customer said he didn't want the gasoline since he lived 300 miles out of town and would have to keep returning to the dealership to fill up. ,The salesman then droppedahe price of the car- by $150, more than enough to cover the cost of the gasoline. Thus, the gasoline wasn't free at all. "Wholesale" also causes trouble. It is most unlikely that you will be able to buy goods wholesale unless you are in business for yobrself or happen to be the owner's son-in- law. The wholesale price is what the retailer pays when he buys in quantity, To this, he adds his markup for overhead and profit and arrives at the retail price —the price you pay. There, are few real bargains in the buyer's world. Shop around before making a major purchase, compare prices, service and return policies in at least three stores. "Discount" is often a meaninglessAerm. An item that has a discounted price of $1.99 in one store may be discounted to $1.69 in another. Comparison shopping is a must when dealing with "discount" stores because of wide price variations. One outlet may have the lowest prices in sport- ing goods, but the highest prices in household furnishings. Common Gimmicks . Driveway Resurfacing A wandering salesman claims to have just completed ajob nearby and, for a t low price, offers "to resurface your driveway. The material he uses, rather than being of good quality, may be old crankcase oil which won't dry and will, cause damage to your floors when tracked into your home. Model Home Another ploy is to offer the proud homeowner a reduced price for aluminum siding if the home is used as a "before and after" model; After signing the contract the owner discovers his neighbor's house is also a model" and both are paying much more money than if they had bought their siding from a reputable dealer. Carpet A door-to-door salesman tells you that he has, enough broadloom left overfrom anotherjob to carpet one of your rooms. He offers this at an unbelievably low' price to "save transporting it back to his warehouse." The homeowner can't resist the "bargain" but, later, finds that the carpet is poor quality, less quantity than claimed and is a patchwork of pieces. Termites A So-called pest exterminator will enter an uninfected home and find "evidence" of termite damage. After sell., ing a termite control contract to the owner, he will return number of times in succeeding months to discover new "infestations" resulting in additional expense for the hotteowner. In the second' game of the playoffs played in Lucan Sunday afternoon, Clinton averaged the earlier defeat by winning 8-2. However, the score- did not in- dicate how close the game was as going into the third the score was knotted 2-2. Jeff Park and Ed Robb scored the Lucan markers. In the third Clinton held off an early Lucan attack and then went on to score six straight goals as the Lucan team faltered. Kevin' Lightfoot turned in a fine per- formance considering that Lucan was well outshot in the game. Prepare for fastball During the past week the Lucan Irish Nine Men's Team attended an Ailsa Craig and District Fastball League meeting to discuss the upcoming season, On the same night a group interested in forming a Jr, men's team held a meeting to see if it is possible to join a league. Paul Wraith registered the Lucan shut-out, stopping three shots, ,which goes to show how well Lucan out- played. the Michigan team. Sunday, Royal Oak bounced back to break Danny Thompson's bid for a shut-out, while the Royal Oak goalie limited the Lucan scorers to nine goals, Faron Sovereign led the Lucan attack with two goals while Ron Glenn, Anthony Clarke, Martin Duenk, Bob Hodgins, Doug Latta, Wayne McCallum and Andrew Spruyt contributed single goals. It's too bad that Royal Oak 'travelled so far only to be beaten by such horrendous scores. In all fairness, Royal Oak is only an "E" Division'Team while Lucan is "D" and perhaps a game against the Lucan house league 9-1, pee-wee all-stars would have ' made for better games. straight, Trailing 2-1 going 'into the third period, Lucan rallied on goals by Mark DeBoer and Paul Wraith. Comrades, remember the "program? Several years ago the Legion had the foresight to sign Godfrey Dyson of Great Britain, one of thetfinest, if not the finest, track and field coach in the world, to a five year contract for the purpose of setting up and holding a series of coaching clinics across Canada. Our purpose being to assure our young athletes had well trained and competent coaches to train them. There is no doubt in my mind the Legion's R.C.L.S.T.P. project has finally paid off and Canada has the medals to prove it. Friday evening, Branch 540 held the annual public speaking contests at Branch level with the winners progressing to the Zone Competitions. Branch 540 wishes to take this opportunity to thank the teachers and the contestants for their ,support of this worthy program. Here is what a lot of people have been waiting to hear, especially the participants of the Lucan Legions first annual ,cheque draw - the winner of the January cheque draw, which was held at the February general meeting, was Comrade K.G. Wood, RR 3, Ilderton. The draw was made by Comrade John McAllister, president of the Exeter Branch of the Legion. A note of interest is the fact that Comrade K.G. Wood's ap- plication for membership into Branch 540 had been accepted just prior to the draw being made. What a way to be accepted into a Branch.
