"Nobody cares. There's no one
to listen to me!" is the cry of
many people who are in trouble
and don't know where to turn.
In Exeter there is a group who
cares and there is someone who
will listen.
Last July a family counsellor,
under the auspices of a group
called Information South Huron,
began a counselling service for
anyone who needed it.
According to Keith McLean,
chairman of the committee, this
pilot project has worked well,
"There's been a fairly steady
patronage since July which in-
dicates it is fulfilling a need," he
states. Consequently, the service
will continue.
However, the committee, made
up of several community
members, feels there are still
many people in the area unaware
of service being offered. They are
convinced persons in trouble or
with problems can be helped
here so that they need not seek
assistance outside the com-
munity.
Elmer Boomer BAIL, B,
will take over as counseller this
week. He is an experienced
qualified social worker, who lives
in London and Works out of
Goderich Psychiatric Hospital.
He is capable of advising in many
problem areas as well as being in
the position of being able to direct
people to more specialized people
should the need arise.
Mr. Boomer says, "I would like
to think Information South Huron
will become a co-ordinating body
which will work out a referral
pattern to the many agencies in
the country where help can be
obtained,
Some of these agencies might
be Family Court, Legal Aid,
Children's Aid Society, Welfare
Department, etc,
The counselling service will
advise on all areas of family life
and problems including marital
troubles; alcoholism and drug
abuse; financial planning;
rehabilitation; questions con-
cerning welfare and legal aid.
The 24 hour answering service
which has been operating since
July will continue but under a
new number.
Anyone needing help is urged to
phone 235-2900 and make an
appointment with Mr. Boomer.
He, will be in the office behind
Victoria & Grey every Tuesday
afternoon. There is no charge for
this counselling service.
