The Hawks now have a season record of 28 points the same as the Lucan Irish good for a tie for fifth place. The Lucan club has played four games less than the Hawks and appears to have a better chance to end up in fifth place. The Clinton Mustangs are currently in third place and with five games in hand over the fourth place Strathroy Falcons should meet the Hawks in the first round of the playoffs. The Belmont Sunsets are close to clinching the league pennant and will meet the fourth place club in the playoffs. The Mitchell Hawks are second. For many years, the slogan to be heard across the Dominion of Canada during Minor Hockey Week was "Take your boy to the arena and stay to see him play." This year to publicize a new development program for minor hockey, the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association has come up with a new slogan. It says, "It's more fun, to play better hockey," This year's Minor Hockey Week observance which is .now on and concludes this weekend will provide the focus for the public launch of the new minor hockey development program. This year's observance in Exeter will take on a sort of different role and will take place over two days. Six teams of minor hockey players will be in from Trenton, Michigan and will play games against their Exeter counterparts, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday the regular house league action will take place in the morning with all boys registered in the program hav- ing a chance to display their hockey talents. At 12 noon, the Zurich and Exeteratom "B"slubs will 6 3 start the day officially away and will be folloWed n hour later by the Exeter and St. Marys bantam "B" tams. Then at 2 p.m. the official ceremonies laun hing the International series between the Exeter and Trenton Michigan novice clubs. Each hour thereafter a new game will bring together the five other age groups with the final contest ending around eight o'clock in the evening. In addition to the slightly more than 100 boys from Michigan who will be playing here a total of 137 parents are expected to make the trip. _ Management of the Exeter teams and local parents are planning a reception in the arena gym after the games for the visiting parents followed by lunch at South Huron District High School. Sunday morning at 11 a.m. it's back to the arena and the same six teams from the two towns will again swing back into action. On the weekend of March 9 and 10, the six Exeter clubs along with a strong contingent of parents will be making the return trip to Michigan and a doubleheader with Trenton. This weekend's activities should be a fitting climax to Minor Hockey Week. Members of most of the Exeter teams are selling advance tickets to the two day event. The price for a one day admission is one dollar with a fee of $1.50 to allow admittance to the arena both days. Getting back to general information on Minor Hockey Week growth in minor hockey during the past 10 years has been nothing short of phenomenal. A decade ago the CAHAH had less than 150,000 youngsters involved in minor hockey organized within its 11 branches. This year's records indicate that the number of minor players will exceed 650,000. The increase over last year is itself more than 65,000. Accompanying this remarkable growth has been a dramatically escalating demand for higher standards in coaching and training at all levels of minor hockey and from alll regions of the country. The CAHA through the Minor Council just two years ago initiated a major effort to come to grips with the many problems and questions raised by the rapid increase in par- ticipants in minor hockey. Hockey should be fun for our young players but at the same time it can become even more fun when they know how to play the game better. The CAHAH is also concerned that so many young hockey players begin to lose interest in this great sport in their late teens. A great majority stop playing altogether as they enter adult life. The game should be regarded as an enjoyable and healthful recreation for all ages. See you at the arena Saturday and Sunday. Let's give the youngsters playing and the many hard working volunteers the encouragement they deserve. One point per game When the current National Hockey league season started, only four active players possessed a lifetime scor- ing average of one point a game or better. Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins were in a virtual tie for the lead. In his seven NHL years, Orr has produced 613 points in 467 games an average of 1.31 points per game compared to a 1.30 average for Esposito on 898 points in 691 games. Chicago's Stan Mikita was in third spot with a 1.10 average on 1,074 points in 976 games and Gil Perreault's 234 points in 232 games put the Buffalo Sabre youngster in fourth position. A bone shakin' check One of the hardest hitting body checks seen in professional hockey for quite a few years was handed out by the young Boston Bruins defenseman Al Sims Saturday night on Yvan .Cournoyer of the Canadiens, Sims in his first year with the Bruins was one of five aspiring young professionals who spent the first week of August last year at the Huron Hockey School at Huron Park getting extra attention in power skating. Assets of cable TV Despite the hopes of many Exeter and area residents that cable television will soon be here, little seems to have been done in the past year to bring this about. It seems like more than a year when Exeter and Stephen councils agreed to let a -Goderich based firm set up TV cable in Exeter and Huron Park. If and when it does come it could produce plenty of sports widows as husbands have many more chances to watch sports of all kinds. We spent Saturday -in Brampton and were able to watch three NHL games within about seven hours thanks to the wonders of cable. Two of Exeter's minor teams scored victories over Lambeth in a Shamrock league doubleheader at the Exeter arena Wednesday night. In the opening contest the Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees scored a 4-3 win over Lambeth and the local bantams were victorious by a score of 5-3. The pee wee contest was closely contested from start to finish with Exeter outscoring the 'visitors 2-1 in the third period after each club had scored one goal in each of the first two sessions.
