The legislation -proposed in this measure would; 1. Force individuals who had exercised what was a legal right to resign, to continue working beyond the effective date of their resignation. 2, Modify, retroactively, the terms of a contract without consultation or consent of the two parties concerned. 3. Impose compulsory arbitration with the limits of settlement set beforehand. Many besides teachers were gravely concerned that human rights would be infringed upon, that legal contracts would be By MRS. As a result, numerous civil rights, labour, and professional organizations, in addition to many members of the provincial legislature, voiced opposition to the bill. It appears that the demon- stration of concern and protest has had positive results. The government has agreed not to proceed, at the present, with the bill, allowing more time for the parties involved to work towards mutually acceptable solutions, It was not easy for us to leave our classrooms on Tuesday. However, in view of the cir- cumstances, we remain con- vinced that this was a necessity. Hopefully our action will be seen as an exercise of civic respon- sibility in protesting such measures. Yours sincerely, Jack Kopas Communications Officer, District 45( Huron County), Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation. ( telephone 357-3653 Wingham ) Dear Mr. Batten: I was most interested to read in your newspaper recently an article by Alice Claypole com- menting on the kinds of questions people ask about hospitals, and your South Huron Hospital in particular. In many respects a hospital is a unique sort of organization. And though government is deeply involved in financing and the setting of planning priorities, our public hospitals in Ontario are still community-owned cor- porations, governed by a board of local citizens on behalf of the community at large. How hospitals get (or don't get) the money they need to operate with; the crucial job. of the trustees, and the relationship of local physicians to the hospital organization, are very important factors in the smooth running of every hospital. Miss Claypole and yourself are to be complimented for your efforts to let people know more about the hospital and its ser- vices, and I hope you will find many more opportunities to do so. Yours sincerely, R. Alan Hay, Executive Director. By MRS. FRED BOWDEN CENTRALIA Mrs. James Murray of Arkona was a Christmas visitor with Mr. & Mrs. Russell Wilson and family.
