Increases in minimum wages and vacation pay and employee- entitlement to paid statutory holidays were recently an- nounced by Labour Minister Fern Guidon. They become effective January 1, About 265,000 letters containing two copies of a bulletin outlining details of the changes in em- ployment standards, are being mailed to employers. The letter asks employers to post the bulletins for their workers to read as required by The Employment Standards Act, Section 37, which is being used for the first time. The mailing, one of the largest from the government to Ontario business and industry involves use of a new list provided by Statistics Canada. Details of the new standards were announced by Mr. Guindon on November 1 to give employers as much lead time as possible to make adjustments to the proposed wage increases. The Minister said that requiring companies to post the bulletins was designed to sup- plement an advertising program planned for early in the new year to inform employees of the new labour standards.
