formula
Good forechecking, hard hitting and top notch goal ten-
ding. Does this sound like a good formula for a successful
hockey team?
It,proved very successful for the London Knights Sun-
day night as they downed the Wings of the Soviet 5-3 in an
exhibition game at the London Gardens.
The London team unable to pick up any reinforcements
for the game proved they were capable of going alone and
doing quite well.
It was one of the best games we have had the privilege
of watching in quite a long while. After giving up a quick
goal to the Russians in the first minute of play, the London
club settled down and bottled the visitors up with close
checking before they could get started.
When the Soviet club was able to get their passing
patterns going they were very dangerous. On many oc-
casions they appeared to over do the passing as they gave up
good scoring chances with yet another relay.
Body checking was prevalent throughout the game. One
of the hard checks has put one of the Knights out of action
for possibly a couple of months.
Early in the second period, Wings defenceman Juir
Tjurin caught Andy Spruce looking the wrong way as he ap-
proached the Russian blue line. As a result the Knights cap-
tain suffered a severe injury to his left knee.
The Russian defencemen like to hit the opposition low
with the hip and send them flying high into the air.
Earlier London defenceman Roger Lemelin caught high
flying Eveni Kkharzh with a bone shattering check.
The program for the game showed nine of the same
Russian players which appeared in the dramatic 1972 series
against Team Canada.
Actually only three saw regular action against the
Knights. One of the Wings and a National player Valeri Kuz-
min appeared in an Eddie Shack role a couple of times.
While used very sparingly, Kuzmin took advantage of
several breaks in the action to get out on the ice and show
his skating abilities.
If London goalie Bruce Aberhart continues the puck
stopping prowess he used Sunday night against the Russians
he should have no trouble making the pro ranks.
Several netminders from recent London junior clubs are
showing well in professional company. One of the most
successful is Dan Bouchard of the Atlanta Flames.
Bouchard who practically stood the Toronto Maple
Leafs on their heads Saturday night in the televised game
was in the news when he first came to London as he brought
his family along in order to qualify for the OHA residence
rule.
A well handled event
Congratulations should go to Ron Horn for the excellent
job in handling the just concluded fourth annual novice
hockey tournament.
Horn puts a lot of time and effort in planning the two
day event and in keeping it rolling in a very efficient
manner.
This .year's tot, irneY,,again provided an excellent brand of
hoCkey. The'entiOrorn 'West Hill, a suburb of Toronto prov-
ed oto be the bestatb;l'although Forest wasn't far behind.
The two area clubs in the competition provided plenty of
interest when they met in a "A" semi-final game. Grand
Bend downed the Exeter Waxers 2-1 to reach the final round
before bowing to the strong Forest team.
Another tourney

the Exeter arena Sunday to compete in the annual Royal
Canadian Legion Zone C-1 pee wee hockey tournament.

meeting Blyth. The Exeter Legion Auxiliary pee wees meet

the afternoon. The _other clubs competing are from

day single knockout event.
More to come
This year's Minor Hockey Day in Exeter featuring
teams from the local Association will take on a new slant.
It will actually be Minor Hockey Days as six teams
from Trenton, Michigan will be in Exeter to play against the
local clubs on Saturday and Sunday, January 26 and 27.
A couple of the local teams have enjoyed home and
home games with the Michigan boys in the past but this is
the first time a series of games has been tried.
The fourth annual Exeter
novice hockey tournament staged
during the. Christmas holidays
proved to be a great success with
each of the 20 games providing
exciting action for the spectators.
West Hill, a club from the
Toronto suburb of Scarborough
won the "A" championship and
downed the "B" winners from
Forest '6-3 in the grand cham-
pionship game.
