The man had been watching the "little girl" all through. December. She must have been about 30 years old, though barely four feet high. She handled her crutches well, even though her tiny arms would not reach down to the hand grips. Instead, she clutched the padded tops. But her progress was so slow! He would see her swing into the lobby of the apartment building while he waited for Jean to come downstairs. He called her "Little Laura," She'd had a disease in childhood and it had stunted her growth, Her knee-joints were seized and she had a pair of metal hip joints, making it impossible THE FIRST CHRISTMAS By NANCY PERRY Grade 8 Exeter P.S. The bells are clearly ringing, The angels sweetly singing, Telling of our Saviour's birth, God's present finally sent to earth. The shepherds with their flocks that night, Saw a bright and glorious light, The angels told the Messiah was here, Bringing joy and peace so dear. The wisemen came from a far, Summoned by the stable star, They found Him in a lowly stable, With only a manger for His cradle. The shepherds, the angels, The wisemen, the stable, The star above, All sent in God's love. CHILD OF LIGHT By CINDY WASSON Grade 8 Exeter P.S. On the eve of Christmas first, A little child was born. The parents bright Praised the God of Light For the precious sight Of the child of might for her .tq sit down, The man would talk to her occasionally, and always he was surprised by her mature remarks ..until he remembered once again that she was not a child, but a woman with a child's stature. Withoutlooking, healways knew when it was Little Laura at the outside door because, instead of footsteps, he would hear quiet scuffling noises while the door was being propped open by one of her crutches, He would hurry to open the inside door and hold it, waiting for her, and she would smile and thank him. Christmas Eve it was snowing, That lay before them, A little child. Sinless was he And wise as can be, Yet on a tree, He died for you and me, But he was born poor, A little child. On the eve of Christmas first A Saviour, the Messiah, was born. CHRISTMASTIME By HELEN BRAND & JODI FINN EN Grade 8 Exeter P.S. Christmas is the time for joy, For every girl and every boy. Then wake up early in the morn, To the sound of the brass horn. While mom and dad are still in their beds, The children run about their heads. Squawking and squirming like two wild pheasants, Whining and begging to open their presents. "Can we mom, don't make us sad." "Come on pops, we weren't too bad." So, down the stairs they took off like a dart, Each one trying to get the head start. He was pacing the lobby, won- dering how Little Laura would make out in the snow, He kept looking at his watch. Then he. heard the outer door, and no footsteps. He hurried to open the inner and his expectant smile froze quickly on his face, Little Laura was leaning on the doorpost, flushed and gasping for breath. "It's pretty tough gbing," she panted. She started to walk on but impulsively he stooped, lifted her like a child, and headed for the elevator. "Put me down! Put me down!" It was the voice not of a child, but the imperative tones of a woman. They opened their presents, And all you could here, Was the ripping of paper, And the sound of good cheer. And after the feats of Christmas day, They all went to bed so merry and gay. Yes, Christmas is the time for joy, For every girl and every boy! CHRISTMAS By BRAD TAYLOR Grade 8 Exeter P.S. What is Christmas? Is it Santa Claus? Or is it a time for factories to make money? Is it the joy of getting gifts? Or the thought behind giving gifts? Is it the mad dash for buying presents? Or is it the rush of preparing Christmas dinner? Is it too commercialized? Or is there a deep thought behind it? Is it the fun of making a mess? Or the job of cleaning it up? Is it a Christmas tree? Or church bells? Is it a special time for children? Or is it for others too? Is it the Three Kings? Or is it the birth of Jesus? Think about it! Her crutches fell, He suddenly felt foolish and put her down by the elevators, propped against the wall, She was looking for her crut- ches. "Please give them to me," she said. He did. After a moment or two she looked at his worried countenance and broke into a smile. • "I know you want to help me," she said, "but that's not the way, It's taken the years to become as independent as I am, and I can't allow you to set me back." "I'm sorry," he said somewhat feebly, "It's all right," she reassured him, "You meant well - but like most able-bodied people, you have to learn how to help those who aren't, It's quite all right to offer a hand, but never never give it without first asking. Because you see, we might not want the kind of help you're of- fering," "I'm sorry," he said again, leaning on the wall beside her, feeling better. They talked,- mostly about her. She worked a late shift on a switchboard for a taxi company and, she said, "I owe so much to the March of Dimes ,They not only trained me to do this job but they gave me confidence, which was almost more important, They showed me that though I'm handicapped, I can still do lots of things , .like earning a living. Life is so dif- ferent now ..." He asked questions. Jean arrived and the two of them stayed and talked on. They walked beside her to the elevators and they parted good friends. Before the doors closed Laura managed to call, "Merry Christmas!" The man and woman went out together in the cold and snow but, for some reason, they felt warm inside. And later they told the story to me.
