Middlesex County Board of
Education this week went on
record as deploring the action of
teachers who planned to absent
themselves from classes in
protest against the Ontario
government's Bill 274. The board
also decided that these teachers
would forfeit in December one
day's pay and one day's service
credit for superannuation pur-
poses.
In discussing the situation at
this week's regular Board
meeting, trustees applauded
those teachers who decided to

Readings by Mrs. T. Emery,
Sr., Mrs, Cecil Neil, jokes and
recitations by Arnold Hodgins,
Music by Mrs. Roy Hamilton,
now of Exeter, on the piano and
Clarence Rogers on the violin,
made for a fun program for 47
seniors at their annual Christmas
Party.
A turkey dinner, catered for by
the Auxiliary to the Legion was
thoroughly enjoyed as was the
carol singing, led by Mrs. Frank
Hardy, Sr,, and the visit from
Santa Claus, who distributed the
gifts to each member. These
were supplied by means of a
name draw from the last
meeting.
The afternoon closed with
dancing, by some of the mem-
bers, to the strains of various
"named bands" - via recordings!

By the way: A thought for the
new year.
The joy of life is living it and
doing things of worth,
In making bright and fruitful all
the barren spots of earth.
In facing odds and mastering
them and rising from defeat.
And making true what once was
false, and what was bitter,
sweet.
For only he knows perfect joy
whose little bit of soil
Is richer ground than what it was
when he began to toil.

By SID DALEY
A tip of our berets are in order
to Comrades Li'l Len Fisher and
Roy Scott Branch 540's energetic
co-sports chairmen and if
Tuesday night's mixed sports do
held December 18 is what they
have in store — Comrades that's
for me.
It was an extremely well
planned deal and everyone at-
tending, and there were many,
thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Following the regular sports they
held a little dart contest— one for
the women another for the men —
"Christmas Around the World"
was presented by Kindergarten
to Grade 4 at Lucan Public
School, Wednesday evening.
The choir, directed by music
supervisor, Miss Lois Davey,
composed of pupils of grades 2, 3
and 4 opened the concert with
Skater's Waltz and I'd Like to
Teach the World to Sing.
The First Christmas in
Bethlehem was presented by the
Kindergarten,. pupils of Mrs.
Berdan and Mrs. Knoblauch,
The Wandering Carollers sang
several carols. Grades 1 and 2
from Mrs. Williamson's and Mrs.
McRoberts' rooms presented
Christmas in Canada.
.The kindergarten rhythm band
played Jingle Bells. Karen
Radcliffe and Lisa McKenzie did
a modern jazz dance, "Bobbing
Along."
Christmas in Holland was
presented by grades 2 and 3 from
nine darts — high score to win.
The winners were Mary Kooey
and the old stager, Sid Daley. I
guess we showed those young
upstarts where to place the darts,
eh Mary — ahem.
Another little reminder
regarding the 1974 cheque draw,
time is getting short folks, get
those chequs sold and the
returns in as soon as possible to
allow the chairman of the func-
tion time to assess the situation,
bring you up to date ,on the
progress made, and what further
has to be done to make it suc-
cessful.
Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Mikita's
classes.
The Story of the First Christ-
mas Tree and Christmas in
Germany was presented by
grades 3 and 4 of Miss Stewart's
room.
Mrs. Chateauvert's grade 3's
presented Festivities in Mexico.
The choir closed the show with
It's a Small World.
Municipal vet
is honored
At the Biddulph council annual
Christmas meeting and party,
Monday evening, Austin Hodgins
was honored after 25 years in
municipal government. Mr.
Hodgins served six years as
councillor, six as Reeve and 13 as
clerk of Biddulph Township.
Remember the success of this
venture remains with you the
individual to do your part — get
behind lively 540 and help them
help the youth in our community
by your active participation in
this program. Ask any member
of the Legion, if you are in-
terested, if he is not quite
familiar with the operation he
will find out the score for you.
The Members Pot 0' Gold has
started again, Denise Daley's
name was drawn last week and
she not being registered, the Pot
continues to grow. Get in on the
fun, if you are a member of 540
drop into the lounge and place
your name in the special register,
remember you must register
once every week to be eligible for
half the pot which is drawn
around 10:00 p.m. Saturday
nights.
There is a busy Comrade who
works behind the Legion scenes,
oft times while we are still in bed
this chap will be busy around the
Legion Hall setting up for a do, or
cleaning up after one that has
finished, he never complains and
is always ready and willing to do
his part to further the Aims and
Objects of the Legion. I am sure
you all know by now to whom we
are referring, its none other that
our devoted Comrade Lloyd
Gibson.
Friday night, December 21 at a
special do Comrade Lloyd was
presented with a Certificate of
Merit, signed by the President of
the Ontario Command of the
Royal Canadian Legion in
recognition of the tremendous
support he has rendered to
Branch540RoyalCanadianLegion
and the Legion in general,
All Comments can add to this
award is that it is most deserving
and congratulations, Comrade
Lloyd, keep up the good work, its
Comrades like you that make us
proud to call ourselves
Legionaires.
In closing the last issue of
Comments for 1973 may I say its
been great fun writing it, many
thanks to the Editor for
publishing it (sometimes I
wonder why) and if you have in
anyway enjoyed reading it that
makes it all the more worthwhile,
for me at least.
There'll be more in 74 — until
then may your holidays be the
merriest and happiest you have
ever known — Happy New Year
to you all.
And that's 30 for 73 —
remember — The good die young
— and the old dye often.

depend on available classrooms
and location of the students who
need the service.
To help students and teachers
prepare for the introduction and
extension of the metric system in
Canadian life, the Board ap-
proved a program that will start
with those in kindergarten to
grade 2 and eventually reach all
grades. Teacher training will
begin in the fall of 1974 with
classroom instruction starting in
January 1975.
Finally, the Board supported a
resolution of the Kent County
Board of Education opposing the
return of daylight saving time on
a year-round basis as an energy
conservation measure,
