In this last column of ours for the year 1973 we would
like to do a quick rundown of sporting activities in this area
and maybe take a peek at what could happen in the year just
ahead.
The year 1973 has to be regarded as most successful in
this area for one particular reason. We feel the number of
persons of all ages engaging in recreation activities of all
kinds was at a new high.
When one talks about recreation the usual thought is
sports and possibly some of those most publicized.
We hope with the reorganization of the RAP committee
here in town that more activities for all ages of people can
be started along with programs for the neighbouring com-
munities.
At a recent recreation meeting in Usborne township Len
Love, the recreation director for the town of St. Marys gave
a very good, definition of the word recreation.
He listed recreation as, "a constructive enjoyable and
satisfying use of leisure time by people of all ages giving
them something to do in an organized way."
Love suggested activities such as house league hockey,
gymnastics, arts and crafts and euchre games for the senior
citizens were just as important as the more publicized
teams.
He qualified his euchre statement by saying it was not
only senior folks involved in euchre playing but many per-
sons much younger. Talking about euchre we have several
people on our staff who could probably use the experience
after seeing their displays of card sharkery at our recent
staff party.
While it is great to bring home a championship as the
will to win is very important in any undertaking, we feel
many, many people in all branches of athletic endeavours
need a good pat on the back.
It takes the co-operation of a lot of people to operate
house league hockey programs and this can be seen at the
Exeter arena each Saturday morning as a large number of
men give several hours to supervise the youngsters.
The same goes for minor baseball programs which are
now quite successful in many of the neighbouring towns and
villages. The Exeter Minor Baseball Association is back in
operation and serving a worthwhile purpose. Good ball
programs are underway at Dashwood, Crediton and Zurich.
Several recreation hockey leagues, the Exeter and dis-
trict and the Ausable along with the South Huron in-
termediate loop take care of a lot of young fellows along
with some others who are not quite so young but still feel
like a bit of exercise on the ice.
While talking back a bit about championships, we forgot
about the Huron Minor Soccer Association championship
won by the Exeter squirts.
A great vote of thanks should go to Dave Zyluk, Damien
Solomon and other members of the Exeter Centennial
Soccer club in providing Exeter and area youngsters with
the opportunity to learn yet another sport.
We are probably getting ahead of ourselves here by talk-
ing about the future possibilities of recreation in this area.
Exeter council is expected to name a recreation direc-
tor sometime in the new year and this could be the start of
many new and exciting activities for residents of all ages.
At about the same time we expect recreation com-
mittees will be formed in Usborne township and the village
of Grand Bend.
This is certainly an indication, municipal officials are
becoming more increasingly aware of the extra leisure time
most people have and this trend is expected to continue.
Probably the top highlight of the winter sporting scene
in Exeter was the capture of the Ontario Minor Hockey
Association "B" championship by the Exeter Legion Aux-
iliary pee wees.
This club of young hockey players handled by Bev
Skinner and Lloyd Moore were a credit to their community
throughout the entire playoff series.
The second important championship brought to this
area was an effort by a group of young men from throughout
the area. The South Huron Panthers won the Huron-Perth
Conference junior championship for the third time in recent
years and this is a great accomplishment for coach Doug
Ellison.
The high school club is made of players from not only
Exeter but Hensall, Zurich, Grand Bend, Dashwood,
Crediton and all the surrounding townships.
Add to this the hundreds of persons taking part in five
pin bowling at the Exeter Lanes and the many curling ac-
tivities at the Exeter curling club.
Smaller groups, but certainly not lacking in enthusiasm
are the lawn bowlers and the members of the Exeter Legion
mixed dart league.
For the coming year we would like to wish every sport
and recreation group the best in competition and possibly
the most important, enjoyment. The success of these ven-
tures can be measured in the amount of people par-
ticipating,
We would ask all sporting and recreation groups,
regardless of their size and amount of participants to let us
know about your happenings and we will be glad to provide
the news coverage.
One of the important national sporting events which will
be held in close proximity to Exeter is the Canadian Brier
curling championship which will be held in London early in
1974.
In closing we would like to wish our readers a Very
Joyous and Happy Christmas season and a Prosperous and
Enjoyable New Year,
Also, a sincere thanks to the many people who provide
us with sports information throughout the year. There are
far too many to single out. Just a very sincere thank-you.

In a well-played and hard-
hitting atom game, Lucan edged
St. Thomas 4-3 Saturday af-
ternoon. Lucan took command
early in the game and then had to
hold off a late St. Thomas attack
to preserve the win. Paul Wraith
led Lucan with two goals while
Jamie Shipley and Kevin Duenk
added the single markers.
South London came to town
Friday night and went home with
a 8-3 victory over the Lucan pee
wees in exhibition play. Lucan
was unable to score during the
first two periods while their
opposition netted seven goals.
Scott Revington scored twice
for Lucan with Martin Duenk
assisting on both goals. Faron
Sovereign added the third Lucan
goal.
The same two towns played in
the bantam game which ended in
a 4-4 tie. Lucan led 2-1 after the
first on goals by Ken Holland and
Rick Freeman.
Both teams traded second
period goals with Rick Freeman
getting his second of the night as
Lucan headed into the third still
holding a one goal advantage.
However this was quickly erased
as South London scored two quick
goals to take the lead. With seven
minutes remaining in the game,
Martin Clarke scored to tie the
score.
Lucan midgets let Huron East
build a 2-0 lead early in the game
and then roared back with seven
consecutive goals • to dump the
visitors 7-2. Lucan received two
goal performances from Jim
Benn, Gord Moon and Randy
Kraul while Cecil Nickles added
the other score along with three
assists.
With Lucan juveniles leading 4-
2 with two minutes remaining in
the game it looked as if they
