Santa's origin
By BRAD DATA R S
Grade 8 -Exeter P.S.
December 1969
Some people believe in Santa
Claus and some don't, Today
Santa Claus developed from a
real person, Saint Nicholas, who
lived in the 300's A,D. He was a
bishop of Myra, an ancient town
of Lycia, now in Turkey.
According to his legend he was a
boy who became a bishop and
was extremely kind and often
went out at night taking presents
to the needy. After his death,
school-boys of various European
towns celebrated his feast day on
December 6 by electing a boy-
bishop, who dressed in
magnificent robes and, lead a
parade through the streets where
there was much feasting but later
this custom died out and St.
Nicholas still remained the
favourite Saint with children.
Santa Claus' appearance
changed when his name changed.
Santa Claus described many
different ways but it was Clement
C. Moore, who wrote a poem for
his children and described him
the way he is known today as a
round and jolly figure with
twinkling eyes, a "nose like a
cherry" and a white beard. He
puffs a stump of a pipe and rides
in a sleigh pulled by eight rein-
deer and was dressed from head
to foot in fur.
Santa Claus' activities in
American style became popular
in Canada, England and
Australia as a person who
brought gifts and Christmas
Cheer.
If you were wondering where
Santa Claus originated, I hope
this will answer your question.
What is Christmas?
By DEBI WOODEN
Exeter P.S.
December 1969
What's Christmas? Well we all
know the answer to that question.
Its a time when we celebrate
Christ's birth and Santa Claus'
visit. A time when everyone is at
peace with their friends and,
neighbours., The time when you
say "Merry Christmas" to a
perfect stranger and not think
yourself a fool. It's a time when
most of humanity joins to
celebrate one of the most
peaceful and beautiful times of
the year.
Christmas is something dif-
ferent to each individual. To the
small child it's Santa Claus' visit
and hopes for an electric train, a
pair of skates or a doll.
To others its a holiday and a
visit with relatives,
But, to me its both these things
but something different too,
Christmas to me is one big wish
at the end of another year. I look
back and remember em-
barrassing, sad and wonderfully
happy occasions, but more than
the look at the past, I look
towards the future and here I find
my wish. So I would like to share
with you my Christmas wish for
1969.
"Oh thank you God on this cold
night,
For all you've done for me,
Especially so this, wish of mine,
Might really someday be.
I wish tonight for peace on earth
For every colour and creed
Because dear Lord if things work
out,
There'd never again be greed
Then all the world would share
alike,
And no man would be in want.
How wonderful it would be.
Oh thank you God for the hope we
need
On this wonderful Christmas
Eve."

Dear Santa,
I've been wanting to write this
letter for quite some time, but I
have had no free time at all. First
on my list is Bob Stanfield whom
I think would simply adore an
electric train. I don't want to be
sarcastic but that's about his
speed real fast. Mitchell Sharp
who is our minister for External
Affairs, he could use a Johnny
Seven to fight in Biafra. Also for
Richard Nixon being as he will be
involved in the space program
I'm sure he would appreciate a
Billy Blastoff just to practice on,
Oh yes I almost forgot, what's his
name in France oh yea DeGaulle
he wants Quebec for Christmas.
but I think if you talked to Nixon
you could have this fellow on the
Moon in no time. Santa I would
like a football for Christmas.
Yours truly,
Pierre Elliott Trudeau

Family Xmas
By KATHY CAMPBELL
Grade 8 Exeter P.S.
December 1969
• It was a dark and stormy night.
The tree-tops glistened from the
snow. Everything was peaceful
and quiet around the McFlee's
house. The children were
snuggled in their beds upstairs in
the house sound asleep for Santa
to come. All of a sudden down in
the living room there arose such
a clatter that everyone jumped
out of bed to see what was the
matter, They ran down the stairs
to the living room and there as
big as life was Santa Claus. He
was lying there on the floor as he
tripped over Jenny's roller skate,
Mr. & Mrs. McFlee sent the
children back up stairs into bed.
They let Santa Claus rest for a
while so they tip-toed carefully
up the stairs. The children woke
up at the crack of dawn to see
what Santa had left them. After
Jenny opened one of her gifts she
found out that it was the roller
skate that Santa had tripped
over, Ever since then she has
learned to pick things up after
herself.
Christmas cards
By MICHAEL OTTEWELL
Grade 8 - Exeter P.S.
December 1969
Each year Christmas is
celebrated all over the world. In
Canada and the U.S. there is one
major problem concerning
Christmas. The giving of
Christmas cards makes this
festive time of year over
celebrated. It is unethical to send
a twenty cent greeting card to
your next door neighbour. A
friendly greeting made in person
or on the telephone does just as
well or better than a fancy-faced
piece of paper with a verse that
does not express one's true
feelings. Also, have you ever
noticed how people buy their
Christmas cards? They go into a
store and purchase a box of cards
and seldom read the verse inside.
I think that giving Christmas
cards in large quantities and to
send cards to your neighbour is
very unappropriate,
Dear Santa

December 1968
Dear Santa Claus:
It's that time of year again that
you'll be getting loads of letters
asking you to bring "all sorts of
toys to good little •girls and boys':
Well, I've tried not to be selfish
this year; and I hope you find my
letter a little different.
Santa Claus, I'd like you to take
the biggest gift you were going to
give to me, sell it, and share it
among the children in Biafra. I'd
like you to send a few more men
in Vietnam back to their homes in
the United States. I would like
you to send a bit of food and
money to some starving people,
somewhere in the world. Santa
Claus, please send a package of
joy somewhere where it's
needed, and make some more
people happy, just for me.
In other lands
By SHELLEY WEBER
Grade 8 - Stephen Central
December 1969
Christmas will soon be here
again and the rush of Christmas
shopping begins. For most little
boys and girls Christmas means
receiving fancy dolls, trains,
trucks and other enjoyable toys
on Christmas morning. Since we
get so many nice things in our
country we don't seem to realize
how unfortunate some children
are in foreign lands. Wars are
going on and in some places little
children have no food to eat or
warm clothes to wear. When
these children wake up on
Christmas morning they do not
have any gifts to open or they
don't have a big Christmas
,dinner with turkey and pudding,
like we do in our country. These
children do not know what a nice
Christmas is like. Maybe you and
I could help those unfortunate
children by sending them
something we don't use any more
and help make the Christmas
more enjoyable.

sofa, I viewed a man dressed in
red with white fur trim and he
was fat and had a brown sack
swung over his back. It was Santa
Claus but there was no such
thing. He's just a legond.
He waddled over to the tree and
stuck his beard into the sack and
pulled out a toy dump truck for
Jimmy and a doll for Susan. Then
he plopped down in a chair and
closed his eyes. Ten minutes later
he awoke and said to himself
aloud, "Well its time to go," and
he climbed up out of the chair and
walked over to the window,
paused and then out he went.
I moved quietly to observe how
he got to the sled because there
was no possible way for him to
get to the roof or the ground
without jumping or climbing up a
ten foot span to the roof which
was totally impossible. When I
got to the window I noticed that
there were no tracks in the snow
and I should have heard him if he
was on the roof, He must have
flown. MMMM. That's strange,
Then off in the distance I spied a
man flying through the air like a
bird. It just doesn't seem possible
but it was true I saw him with my
very own eyes. Yes, it was true.
