Local Broncos
get even split
The Exeter Broncos gained an
even split in two Shamrock minor
league games this week.
Playing in the atom division the
Broncos dropped a 5-1 to St.
Marys Saturday and came back
to down Lambeth by a 2-0 score
Sunday.
In Sunday's victory Jeff
Goarley picked up his first shut-
out of the year as he blanked the
Lambeth youngsters.
Both Exeter goals came
midway through the third period
and within 34 seconds of each
other,
David Underwood put the
Broncos on the scoresheet as he
converted a pass from Scott
Pincombe and then in quick order
Mike Taylor registered with help
from David Bell.
The only Exeter marker in the
loss to St. Marys came from the
stick of Mike Taylor on an
unassisted effort.
The Broncos will see their next
action at the Exeter arena
Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. with
St. Marys supplying the op-
position.
Competition was very close in
the two Exeter and district Rec
hockey league games played at
the Exeter arena, Thursday
night.
In the opening game of the
night, Les Pines edged Newby
Tire 6-5 while the senior Hawks
edged Usborne township by a
score of 4-2.
A goal by Scott Burton with
only seven seconds remaining in
the third period ensured the Les
Pines victory over Newby Tire.
George Bruneau led the scoring
attack for the winners with a two
goal effort while other single
goals were notched by Ron
Moore, Al Rimmer and Paul
Mason.
Two goals from the stick of
Tom Watt was the best per-
formance for Newby Tire.
Adding single scores were Mike
Cushman, Gary Parsons and Bob
McDonald.
In the final contest., all scoring
was confined to the third period.
The Hawks goals were scored in
single fashion by Matt Muller, Al
Knight, Terry Janke and John
Musser.
The Usborne successful shots
were fired by Rob Dickey and
Dennis Passm ore.

In Ontario Hockey Association
Continental Senior league play
this week, the Lucan-Ilderton
Jets gained an even split in two
outings.
Friday night in Preston, the
Jets were flying high with a 5-1
lead early in the second period
when the roof fell in. The Preston
Jesters came on strong to get
back on even terms at 6-6 in the
third period and went on to score
a goal in sudden-death overtime
to gain the victory.
Sunday afternoon on home ice
at the Ilderton arena, the Jets
scored a 5-3 decision over the
Stratford Perths.
This week the Jets meet the
Bothwell Barons in a home and
home series with games in
Ilderton Friday night and in
Bothwell the following night.

An outstanding performance
by goalie Lorne Daer, especially
in the second period allowed the
Jets to get their 5-3 Sunday win
over Stratford.
Jets manager Don Urbshott
listed Daer's efforts in the second
session as "fantastic" when
Stratford fired 16 shots at the L-I
cage and only one found the
mark.
Most of the game scoring took
place in the first period as the
Jets scored three to two by the
opposition . Rick Fifield headed
the Jets opening period scoring
with two goals, His first came on
a penalty shot.
The free shot was awarded
when Stratford defencemen Jim
Betts fell on the puck in his own
crease. Fifield made no mistake
in moving right in and pulling the
Perth netminder out of position.
Fifields' second score came as
he was able to deflect a shot from
BillBourne near the blueline.
The other Lucan-Ilderton goal
in the first was scored by Jacques
Cousineau on a three-way effort
with Bill Bourne and Fifield.
The teams traded single goals
in the first period with Cousineau
registering for the Jets and Dave
Schnurr replying for Stratford.
The only score in the third
period was an insurance marker
for the Jets from the stick of
Doug Galloway.
Rick Fifield received a game
misconduct and will miss the
next two starts for the Jets.
Jamie Robb received a similar
sentence Friday night and
missed Sunday's game.
Fail to hold lead
Friday night in Preston, the
Jesters win was no joke for the
Jets. The L-I boys held a com-
manding lead at 5-1 early in the
second.
All of a sudden Preston scored
four consecutive goals and it was
a different ball game.
Jack Nairn scored twice for the
Jets in the first period and single
goals were added by Jamie Robb
and Jacques Cousineau. Dave
May scored for the Jesters.
Robb scored on a breakaway at
the .37 mark of the second before
the Preston club went to work.
Brian Haskett. John Chambers,
Bruce Davey and Roy Caswell
scored for Preston and Rick
Fifield counted for the Jets.
Frank Darcy scored the tying
goal early in the third period and
the score remained at 6-6 until
John Chambers put the puck past
Lorne Daer in the L-I net at 4.23
of sudden-death overtime,
