Exeter clubs get two wins
in Shamrock league play •
Hiller
coming
While it is still about two months away, the Exeter
Sportsmen's dinner being sponsored by the Exeter Lions
club should be a huge success.
Through the untiring efforts of Lion Don Taylor, the
dinner is being arranged and will be held on. Tuesday,
February 5, the night following a similar affair in London.
Don Taylor told us Monday morning he had just receiv-
ed word direct from Tiger Stadium in Detroit that Tiger
star relief pitcher John Hiller would definitely appear here.
Hiller's recovery from a fairly serious heart attack a
couple of years ago makes a tremendous story in itself
without mentioning his performance in the 1973 American
league baseball season.
Hiller, a native of Scarborough, Ontario set a major
league record this past season in the number of saves
recorded by a relief pitcher.
When the Tigers were still in the running for the league
pennant late in the season it seemed Hiller was called on in
almost every game to head to the mound and put out an op-
posing rally.
Other top notch sports celebrities are being contacted to
be, part of Exeter's first Sportsmen's dinner. All proceeds
will go to aid Crippled. Children.
The Lions club is a prime booster of crippled kids work
and this is a great opportunity for all area sportsmen to do
their part. In addition you will be assured of a wonderful
night's entertainment with a chance to chat with a lot of in-
teresting personalties.
Other confirmations on the speaking list are the former
big bad boy of the National Hockey league, Lou Fontinato;
well known harness race horse owner Mac Cuddy of
Strathroy; former NHL performer Larry Jeffrey.
Negotiations are still continuing with American league,
baseball umpire Emmett Ashford and Mrs. Penny Tweedy,
owner of the super thoroughbred Secretariat. We will keep
our readers posted as to the speakers as they are confirmed.
Knowing the many hours of work Don Taylor and his
Lion cohorts are putting in and the number of contacts they
are using, the dinner is bound to be a success.
Helping Coaches Help Youth
Help Hockey Help Canada
As Autumn of '72' shifted to winter, mass enthusiasm
and excitement over the Russia - Canada Series gradually
subsided. Canadians settled back to watch regular NHL en-
counters, and muse over Canada's ability to withstand
future challenges to International Supremacy.
Can we beat the Russians next time? What is being done
to improve and upgrade our skills? Hockey Night in Canada
is presenting a five-part series that may answer many
prevailing questions.
The series is based on findings of the Hockey Technical
Advisory Committee (TAC), a body comprised jointly of
members from Hockey Canada (the coordinating body for
all levels of hockey), and the Canadian Amateur Hockey
Association.
Recently, TAC brought 50 of the top Canadian Universi-
ty and minor coaches to Toronto to attend four days of lec-
tures and seminars. The TAC group included represen-
tatives of the best hockey resource people from every
province; working together to assist in the improvement of
coaching proficiency.
Hockey Night in Canada's presentation, which began
Saturday night includes film of the Technical Advisory Com-
mittee in action during this seminar. TAC's efforts,
hopefully will dispel any notion of inclinations on the part of
hockey establishment to rest on past laurels alone.
This Saturday night during intermission night on the
hockey telecast the Russian and Canadian minor hockey
coaching systems will be compared and discussed.
Saturday, December 15 attention will be focused on our
Canadian minor hockey coaching philosophy and what it
should be.
The fifth session to be shown, Saturday, December 19
will feature the professional coach, his attitude towards the
technical advisory committee and its findings. The coach
will be Fred Shero of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Interesting wrestling tourney
The annual Red and Black wrestling tournament will be
held Friday of this week at South Huron District .High
School.
A total of 12 teams from Western Ontario will be in town
to take part in this popular event.
In addition to the local South Huron grapplers, teams
will be in attendance from four London high schools, the
same number from the Kitchener-Waterloo area in addition
to Sarnia, Petrolia and Goderich.

Murray Hodgson, convener for
the event, and daughter Jane, on
behalf of the Lucan Turf Club,
presented Clint with a self-

oils by, a Toronto artist.
Replying, Mr. Hodgins said he
valued what his friends had done
in travelling to Goshen, in holding
the Clint Hodgins Day at the
Lucan Trades Fair. and now
holding this reunion, more than
his actual induction into the Hall
of Fame.
He said there had been -more

Great puck stopping
The Hawks win by a 4-2 score in

after save to keep the Braves

relinquished.

the Hawks on an unassisted-ef-
