Mobile homes
very popular
According to a survey con-
ducted by the Canadian Mobile
Home and Travel Trailer
Association, one out of every five
single-family housing starts in
Canada in 1972 involved a mobile
home.
The association defines the
term "mobile home" as "the
ultimate in pre-fabrication being
manufactured and furnished
completely under controlled
conditions at the factory and
transported on its own chassis to
site for connection to utilities and
services, for use with or without a
permanent foundation for year-
round living."
In 1969 when it became ap-
parent that mobile homes were
providing increasingly ac-
ceptable housing, the CMHTTA
joined government to lay down
specific standards for the con-
struction of mobile homes.
Today's mobile home barely
resembles the travel trailer used
for vacationing. Instead it is a
permanent residence which
merely retains its mobility. It
must be hauled by heavy tran-
sport which can cost the owner up
to $100 dollars for 100 miles.
Because of such costs, mobile
homes though able to be moved
about, tend to remain in one place.
During 1972 single width mobile
homes shipped in British
Columbia far outnumbered other
provinces - 5,321 compared to
3,419 in Alberta, 2,974 in Quebec,
1,652 in Ontario, and 1,581 in Nova
Scotia. (Statistics from
CMHTTA.) Between December
1971 and December 1972, ship-
ments of Canadian - made mobile .
homes increased from 13,788 to
18,593.
According to the Canadian
Consumer Credit Factbook,
published jointly by the Canadian
Consumer Loan Association and
the Federated Council of Sales
Finance Companies, the main
sources of financing for the
purchase of mobile homes are
chartered banks and finance
companies.
Recently under the National
Housing Act, purchasers of
mobile homes have become
eligible for mortgage credit
which may be used for purchase
of land and mobile homes
together, or for the home itself.
The largest age group living in
mobile homes involves those 45
years and older (36 percent) and
the largest occupation group has
as its male family head skilled or
unskilled labor (50 percent).
New minister
likes area
Rev. Clyde Westhaver was
inducted last week to the charges
of Ailsa Craig, Brinsley and
Carlisle United Churches and
says he received a "grand
welcome" to the area.
Rev. Westhaver has served in
many charges throughout
eastern Canada.
A native of Lunenburg, Nova
Scotia, he was ordained in 1945 in
Sackville, New Brunswick, He
served in the Maritimes until 1957
and then spent four years in the
Laurentians of Quebec.
Since coming to Ontario in 1961'
he has served the charges of
Dundalk, Merricksville and most
recently Chatsworth.
Rev. Westhaver and his wife
Evelyn have five children: Mrs.
Dwayne (Faith) McDonald,
Kingston; Carol, Toronto;
Spurgeon, a student at Fanshawe
Community College; and Grace
and Rose who are students at
North Middlesex District High
School in Parkhill.
Rev. Westhaver said one major
reason for his move to this
district was to have closer access
to Fanshawe College and the
University of Western Ontario for
his two youngest daughters.
He added that while he has
received very "kind treatment"
he misses the scenic beauty of
previous charges as compared to
the flat land of this area.

Dear Editor:
If you have been following the
reports in the newspapers of the
trial of Dr. Henry Morgentaler in
Montreal, you will know this
man, who self-admittedly has
performed 6,000 - 7,000 abortions,
was acquitted, and you will have
been shocked and perplexed at
this verdict.
I strongly feel that the Criminal
Code should be ammended to
give the unborn human baby
recognition under the law and the
protection of the law. Human life
should be protected before birth
as well as after birth. I am sure
you will agree that the taking of
innocent lives through abortion is
a definite step backwards in our
civilized society. We are paying a
heavy price in Canada today for
such a bad law.
The following information on
Dr. Henry Morgentaler is taken
from testimony given at the trial
and is therefore public
knowledge:
Dr. Morgentaler averages
approximately $3,000 per day. He
performs three abortions
per hour.
He does not give the woman to
be aborted any medical check-up
or any blood test prior to the
abortion and therefore is not
even sure that she is pregnant,
The doctor-patient relationship
consists only of the doctor telling
the patient the "Cost' grici ask%
her •
a) when her last period began,
b) if she has ever had an abortion
before, and
c) if she has ever had abdominal
surgery.
The woman assisting him in the
operating room is not a
registered nurse.
He administers anaesthesia
without an anaesthesist and has
no resuscitation equipment.
After the abortion, the woman
is sent to the recovery room and
the doctor does not see her again.
There is a lack of follow-up:

dent council representatives Randy Parsons and Jodi Finnen. T-A photo
after the • abortion has been
completed his only follow-up is to
give the woman the names of two
or three doctors should she have
complication.
Needless to say, when a woman
has complications she is not
going to a doctor recommended
by someone who is responsible
for them.
The woman whose abortion led
to Dr. Morgentaler's trial was in
the recovery room as the abor-
tion had been completed at the
time of the police raid. Three
days after the abortion she was
rushed to the Royal Victoria
Hospital in Montreal where
doctors removed 2 cc's of fetal
tissue, approximately one-third
of a six-week fetus.
She had cervical cuts and
lacerations and infection was
setting in. The doctor testifying
on behalf of the Crown stated that

Saturday's Exeter UCW bazaar. Donna Pridham is shown above with a

the woman would probably have
died if she had not been given
medical care.
What can we do to stop this
violence? Bill Jarvis, MP for
Perth stated on the radio that we
are to pressure our members of
parliament. This has tremendous
effect.
