The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1973-11-29, Page 18SEASHELLS BY THE DOZENS — Mr. and Mrs. Murray Neil, Exeter collect seashells by the seashore, as the
above display illustrates. Mr, Neil is especially proud of the conch shells on the top shelf and the large welks
on the second shelf. While Mrs. Neil shows how a shell can be used for a decorative flower vase, Mr. Neil
holds a bouquet of "rosebuds" made from olive shells. T-A photo

shelling occasionally.
After their first trip to Florida,
they brought home more than 250
shells.
Mr. Neil has all sizes and
shapes of shells from a large welk
with a five and one-half inch base
to small (believe it or not!)
shark's teeth! Some are curly-
cued, some are sort of round,
some long and narrow and others
have very usual coloring.
They have interesting names
like cat's eyes, and cat's paws,
olives, paper figs, sand dollars,
and old maid's curls.
But Mr. Neil's prizes are the
large shells including 105 in-
tricate King's crowns, 11 fighting
conchs, four large conchs, 35
smaller welks, five large welks
and 11 left hand welks.
When a welk is "left-handed" it
does not refer to the abilities of
the animal which inhibits the
shell. Rather it refers to the fact
that the bowl of the shell is on the
left hand side of the shell's apex.
- Mr. Neil says his shells are just
4 for hobby and show and he
5t demonstrated how one of the
large welks would make an ex-
cellent flower holder. He also has
a "bouquet of roses" which his n brother made from olive shells,
Right now, Mr. Neil is in the
process of varnishing the shells
he got on his most recent trip.
v_1" There is a lot more to the
process than the simple ap-
plication of varnish, however.
Firsthe boils the shells for about
,•-"-'11 half an hour, Then he goes over
..75V each shell with a wire brush to
remove all the remains inside
and the sediment on the outside.
After this he soaks them in
Javex for one to two and one half
hours, rinses them with cold
water and only then does he
actually apply the varnish.

"She sells sea shells by the sea
shore" is a tongue twister from
a way back.
But everyone knows that before
she could sell those sea shells she
had to gather them, and in this
respect she is not alone.
Mr. and Mrs. Murray Neil,
Exeter have become very in-
terested in collecting sea shells
and have hundreds of them in
more than a dozen different
varieties.
They became interested when
they first went to visit'Mr. Neil's
brother, Morris, formerly of
Exeter at his home in Florida last
spring.
Morris Neil lives on the Gulf of
Mexico coast south of St.
Petersburg and it was he who
first interested his brother in
collecting.
"Shelling" involves wading in
knee-deep water out about one-
half to three-quarters of a mile
from shore. It's very tiring, said
Mr. Neil, so they usually don't go
more than three or four times
during a holiday. Although Mrs.
Neil leaves most of the later work
to her husband, she too goes

It seems they were unable to
get a dial tone. In fact, they
couldn't hear noises of any kind.
There was a really plausible
reason. On investigating Bell
employees found a total of 19,711
feet of telephone line wire
missing,
The 10 wires running together
for a distance of some 1,700 feet
had been cut at both ends and
taken away. The scrap value of
the wire was estimated at $400.
