Before we go any further on this subject we would like to clear up one matter. At the last meeting of Exeter council several members were disturbed that St. Marys officials were consulted for recreation help in Usborne. Usborne recreation people were quick to point out it was the fact, Mr, Love of St. Marys had organized four townships in his area and was familiar with all grants and methods of organization. Usborne councillor Bill Morley was also involved in some of the organization in the neighbPuring township of Blanshard. At the moment, the townships of East Nissouri, West Nissouri,Downie and Blanshard have a combined recreation program with the town of St. Marys. Each township has its own recreation committee and operates some individual programs but their youngsters join in with St. Marys in especially swimming and house league hockey. In making his presentation Len Love pointed out that recreation is "just not sports". He defined recreation as "a constructive, enjoyable and satisfying use of leisure time by people of all ages giving them something to do in an organiz- ed way." He reported one of the most successful recreation pro- jects in his area involved people of middle age. A regular euchre league has been formed and a total of 144 persons play on a regular schedule several times a month. He said the enthusiasm is very high and play at times gets rather hectic and noisy with plenty of table thumping. The Central schools in the area are also used for gym- nastics and other physical fitness activities. Classes are held three nights per week throughout the winter months for men, women and young people. After hearing the presentations by Len Love and Don Simpson from Blanshard township we hope something similar can be organized in this area. A program co-ordinated by the town of Exeter with the assistance of the townships of Stephen, Usborne and Hay could be very successful. Exeter councillor Tom MacMillan and clerk Eric Carscadden sat in on the Usborne meeting as observers. MacMillan said hefelt townships could help in the selection and direction of an area recreation program. A pleasant surprise One of the most pleasant surprises in the National Hockey league this year has been the performance to date of the Atlanta Flames. At the rate they are going at the present time, the Flames in only their second year as an expansion club in the NIflevishoult1 ,make theyvestern division playoffs. I Coach 14erniet..Gedifrion has his club hustling and they pff 4ilost the impossible a couple of weeks ago when they defeated the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadians in successive games. Two former members of the Canadiens seem to be mak- ing the difference with the Flames along with the strong competitive spirit of Geoffrion.Noel Price an18 year veteran around the NHL has been heading the defensive corps of the Flames and one of the top scorers is Leon Rochefort. A good rule change Rule makers in the National Hockey league could do a lot worse than follow some of the moves made in the rival World Hockey Association. The WHA presently is using three rules which are not existent in the NHL. Probably the best move made by the WHA was the use of sudden-death overtime doing away with dull games in which both clubs are happy to settle for a tie. Minnesota Fighting Saints coach Harry Neale says, "teams don't play for a tie in the third period knowing there is going to be sudden-death overtime. It evens out most of the clubsYou lose about as manyas you win so you wind up with about the same number of points, But it's really pleasing for the spectators. You don't see them heading for the parking lots with a few minutes of play remaining." Last year 64 of the WHA's 468 regular season games went into overtime and 45 were settled. In comparison, the National Hockey league with 624 games played came up with a total of 87 tie games. Another rule which results in consistently spectacular hockey is the one allowing a player to pass from his own end to a man on the other side of centre ice as long as the puck precedes him across the red line. It produces a game that breaks very quickly. It also forces defensemen to hang back to protect themselves reducing crowding in the offensive zone. Another excellent rule is the one that forces a team kill- ing a penalty to get the puck over its own blueline before it can ice it. Otherwise it comes back for a face-off. This means power plays are more sustained. Possible record Gary Brown of the Bothwell Barons may well have set a worlds record in a recent Ontario Hockey Association Senior Continental game against the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. With his Bothwell team playing a man short Brown scored no less than three goals during a two minute minor penalty. One of the newsest members of the L-I Jets is currently leading the league in the scoring department. He is Rick Fifield who held the same distinction for the last couple of years with the St. Marys Lincolns. Durham Huskies Seem to dominate the penalty statistics. Among the top four penalized are Bob Dube, Glen Read and Bob Hetherington, all of the Huskies. St. Thomas moved ahead late in the second period and then the Exeter youngsters scored twice in the third period only to have the visitors bounce back to tie the score again with only a little more than a minute remaining. The Exeter scoring honours were well divided. Dan McIver scored the first home team goal on a solo effort. The second marker came on a three-way passing pattern with Randy Regier firing the shot with help from Kevin Baker and Dave Regier. Paul Shapton was on the firing end of the next successful Exeter shot with the assist going to Ken Pinder. Kevin Baker notched the final score for the locals on a pass from Randy Regier. Three of Exeter's minor hockey clubs travelled to Petrolia Saturday night and suffered three setbacks in an exhibition series. Petrolia won the pee wee game 5.2, the bantam contest 6-2 and the midget game by a score of 5-1. In the pee wee game, the Exeter youngsters started off in fine style with the first two goals of the game but that's where their scoring stopped. Doug Brooks opened the scoring on an unassisted effort in the second minute of play and only a few seconds later Danny Bell scored on a pass from Jeff Fuller. The only Exeter midget score cattle on a solo effort by Ken Pinder and it came in the first minute and a half of the first period. • Two teams are again tied for the lead in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league. The Hawks came on strong with four unanswered goals in the third period to down the Irish 9-4. Friday night the Hawks blew a healthy lead late in the third period as they lost 5-4 to Tavistock Braves and Sunday night the Lambeth Flyers scored three times in the last four minutes to gain a 3-3 tie. The Haviiks will be in action on home ice at the Exeter arena Friday night at 8.3Q when the Mitchell Hawks will provide the opposition. The last time the two Hawk clubs met, Exeter gained a decisive 8-2 decision. Sunday night they travel to Tavistock to meet the Braves. Rail late in second period The turning point in Tuesday night's game came late in the second period when the Hawks scored two goals in six seconds during the last minute of play to erase a previous 4-3 Lucan lead, Gerald Weido scored one goal in each period and Brian Taylor also turned in a hat trick per- formance to lead the Hawks in a scoring way to give newly ap- pointed coach Dave Beer his first win in OHA Junior "D" play. Beer was behind the bench for the first time in the 3-3 tie in Lambeth Sunday night. The first period was even with each club scoring two goals. Weido and Kevin Bestard counted for the Hawks while Ron Funston and Craig Corman replied for the Irish. Randy Gilfillan scored on an unassisted effort early in the second to put the Hawks in front and then Funston and Corman each scored again to put Lucan in front 4-3. The last few minutes of Friday's and Sunday's Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" games- for the Exeter Hawks proved to be very disastrous, Friday night on home ice, the Hawks were leading the Tavistock Braves 4-2 with less than three minutes to play in the third period. You guessed it, The Braves came on strong and scored three times in the dying moments to pull out a 5-4 win. It was the same story in Lambeth Sunday night, although the result wasn't quite as serious. The Hawks were able to gain a 3-3 tie with the Flyers and pick up a single point for their night's work.
