At a time when I am getting
rather nervous about a new job
and feeling rather sad about
leaving this one, I was pleased to
find this little gem of philosophy:
The Art of Work
Nothing happens until people
go to work. Work creates the
world we live in. The art of work
consists of what you think about
your work, how you feel about
your work, and what you do about
your work.
It is abolishing the concept of
work as chains and slavery, and
seeing it as freedom to create and
build and help,
It is doing your present work so
well that it will open doors to new
opportunities. It is putting the
stamp of your unique personality
on the work you do. It is making
your work "you".

Some people get a real charge
out of moving. They get
stimulated looking for an
apartment or a house and excited
about decorating it and just
generally take a whole new
outlook on life when they think of
moving, I know a girl in Toronto
who moved five times in two
years, just because she liked it.
Unfortunately, I am not at all
like this. So when it came time to
go apartment hunting in London
last weekend (I am moving the
end of the month) I really wasn't
looking forward to it.
When I think of it, I guess I
have moved pretty often too - six
times in four years, counting all
the rooms I had in residence at
Guelph, from Guelph to London
and London to Exeter, But I have
been pretty lucky all those times.
In residence it was a case of
simply moving to where you were
assigned and I was lucky that all
my rooms were in the same
building,
Then in my last semester, four
girls decided to move off campus.
But it this case, two other girls
took care of finding us a house
and I wasn't able to see it until I
actually moved in.
It wasn't the nicest house in the
world and the neighborhood left
something to be desired, but we
each had a huge bedroom and we
all got along very well,
Then I had to move to London,
but I didn't have any part of
choosing this place either. The
circumstances are far too
complicated to explain but the
first day I saw my apartment
there, was again the first day I
moved in. This place turned out
to be very nice, but my girlfriend
and I moved in with two girls we
had never met before and this
turned out to be a big mistake.
Then I came to Exeter. the first
place I really had to find my own
accommodations, But the task
was made much simpler by the
fact that there wasn't a great
deal to choose from, And as you
may have gathered from
previous columns, I hate making
decisions.
But by last weekend, I knew I
just couldn't put it off any longer.
I just had to go into London to
start looking.
The deed was further com-
plicated by my need for a fur-
nished apartment. The only
furniture I own consists of a desk
and a bed, which my sister has in
Toronto; and a bookcase and a
television which although nice,
don't go very far towards fur-
nishing a place.
I had also decided against a
bachelor apartment. Although
you can get some fairly nice ones
quite reasonably, I have lived for
almost three years in the type of
accommodation where my living
room was also my bedroom and
am sick of it.
So what I had in mind was my
dream apartment - one bedroom,
nicely furnished, frig and stove,
clean and modern, lots of cup-
boards and closets, and if
possible, not to expensive.
I might as well tell you now that
I did find my apartment and as
far as I can tell, it fulfills all the
requirements except the last one.
I'm paying an arm and a leg for
the place, but I like it and plan to
stay for a while, so I hope it will
be worth it,
But believe me, by the time I
found it, I was almost ready to
give up and commute to London
from Exeter.
I tbok a girlfriend with me
because I just couldn't bear the
thought of looking and having to
make a decision on my own. The
first thing we did when we got
into the city was to start phoning.
Naturally I called the best
sounding places first and
wouldn't you know it, the first
place I called had already been
rented.
"Terrific!" thinks I. "Is this a
forecast of doom or what?"
The second, third and fourth,
places I called were all busy and I
could just imagine huge long line-
ups of people waiting to see the
same apartments I was in-
terested in.
By the time I made my fifth
phone call and found no answer, I
was really in a panic. I pictured
taking three or four weeks to find
a place, when I only had two
weeks. Brenda kept telling me to
keep my cool, but by this time I
was far from being anyways
close to cool.
' But what could I do? I started
the list over again and finally
lined up two or three places to
see. As circumstance usually
shapes these things, the first
place I called and finally con-
tacted, was the place I finally
took.
It was not, however, the first
place I looked at. Thank heaven I
wasn't quite desperate enough to
take the first place I saw. It
wasn't too bad in terms of
location and size. But there was
only one entrance to the place
and that was up a very steep,
very dark, very narrow stair-
case. I was scared walking up it
in the middle of the afternoon, let
alone at night.
As I mentioned, however, I
finally did find my dream
apartment. Naturally, there are
a few things wrong with it too, but
the good things outweigh the bad.
The only real snag I ran into
was trying to read the lease.
There were so many howevers,
wheretofores, whatsoevers and
nonethelesses that I had con-
siderable difficulty un-
derstanding it.
But now that I have gone this
far, all I have left is to pack up all
my clothes, books, dishes,
gimcracks, knicknacks and
gewgaws carry them down two
flights of stairs, cart them all into
London and pile them up in my
new apartment.
Shouldn't take me longer than
two or three months!
