Baker leads
A brilliant four touchdown
performance by Kevin Baker led
the South Huron juniors to their
34-6 win Tuesday afternoon.
Coach Doug Ellison classed
Tuesday's win over Goderich as
"a great team effort". He went
on to say, "we played a strong
game defensively and except for
a second quarter touchdown the
opposition failed to threaten
seriously."
Leading the defensive tackling
unit were Ron Webber, Steve
Jennison, John Gould and Terry
McDonald. Ellison credited fine
blocking by Paul Brooks, Bill
Baker, Mike Veal, Jim Gregus
and Don McIver in allowing the
backfielders to pick up large
gains,
Fumble recoveries by Doug
Mclsaac, John Gould and Allan
Lovell helped keep the Goderich
machine under control.
The fifth South Huron touch-
down was scored by Randy
Funs ton who took a John Van
Gerwen pass and completed a 75
yard gain.
The other Pantherpoints came
on a two point conversion from
Van Gerwen to Ken Pinder and

With the high winds of last week leaves were falling by
the thousands in this part of the country including those
from maple trees,
BLit for one kind of Maple Leaf the situation seems to be
a little different. A quick look at the standings in the
National Hockey League and one realizes the Toronto Maple
Leafs are headed in the opposite direction.
Last year, the Toronto club turned in continuous
pathetic performances. Some may feel this year, their
showing to date could be a flash in the pan,
We have never been a very loyal. Leaf fan but this year
they are deserving of good support.
There are a lot of reasons for the resurgence of the
Toronto club. Starting with as good a trio of goaltenders as
any club in the league. they have strong hard hitting and
possibly rough defeneemen to back up younger and faster
skating forwards.
Perhaps most important of all, the Maple Leafs are be-
ing led this year by Leonard "Red" Kelly, a winner if there
ever was one. As a player Kelly was on eight Stanley Cup
champions.
A great teacher of hockey fundamentals and an in-
spirational leader Red has proven in his past coaching ex-
perience at Los Angeles and Pittsburgh that he is capable of
getting the most out of his players.
Last year an agingJacques Plante and several untried
rookies had to carry the load behind an inexperienced
defence.
This year the situation is reversed completely, Kelly
has three proven veterans battling for the net position. To
date Kelly has been getting good, efforts from all three.
They are the colorful Doug Favell who starred with the
Philadelphia Flyers in the 1972-73 playoffs, Boston Bruin
veteran Eddie Johnston who on his hot nights is as good as
any goalie in the world and Dune Wilson who was introduced
to a barrage of rubber last year with the lowly Vancouver
Canucks.
The Leafs were fortunate in the draft this year, signing
their top three choices, Bob Neely, Ian Turnbull and Lanny
McDonald.
Another problem last year was that the Leafs could be
outmuscled and pushed around by the opposition. They
were lowest in the league in penalty minutes last year with
716. They won't be this year with fellows like Neely around.
Neely with 304 minutes in penalties with the Peter-
borough Petes during last season will add toughness to the
defence. Add to this the six foot, 195 pound Turnbull, a
graduate of the Ottawa juniors.
Further cause for optimism in the Toronto camp has
been the play of the two Swedish players making their
hockey debut in North America. professionally,
Defenceman Borje Salming and forward Inge Ham-
marstrorn have stood up to their international reputations.
The Leafs reportedly shelled out 5100,000 to a Swedish team
for the right to the two men. It seems to have been money
well spent.
The return to top form of the Norm Ullman, Paul
Henderson and Ron Ellis line will help the Leaf cause im-
mensely. At the moment Ullman has seven goals and
Henderson is right behind with six and Ellis has been
providing most of the assists for his line-mates.
Henderson's six goals in 12 games is a far cry from last
year when he scored only four times in the first 18 starts.
His inept play last year can be blamed on the pressure and
publicity of the Canada-Russia hockey series.
Change in voices
Officials of Hockey Night in Canada have made a
refreshing change for telecasts this year. They have added
Bob Cole, a former Newfoundlander to their play by play
staff for home games in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Cole who handled the game from Toronto last Saturday
night will be doing about 20 games this year from the three
Canadian cities spelling off Bill Hewitt, Danny Galivan and
Jim Robson.
He will also work on the all-star game telecast from
Chicago on January 29 and during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Edge in statistics
in Tuesday's senior semi-final,

action on two occasions this week

atom division.
On Exeter ice, Saturday, the
Broncos scored a 3-1 victory over
St. Thomas and Monday night
they lost in St. Thomas by a score
of 4-3 on a goal with only four
seconds remaining,
Mike Taylor, Bill Glover and
Dave Shaw were the Exeter
marksmen in the win over
Strathroy while Dave Bell picked
up two assists and Peter Tuckey
notched one.
Dave Shaw was the top Bronco
scorer in the loss to St. Thomas
with a two goal performance
while the odd marker came from
the stick of Dave Bell. Assists
went to Peter Tuckey and Bill
Glover.
The St. Thomas team will be in
Exeter Saturday afternoon at 5,30
for a return engagement with the
Broncos,
Get last period tie
A goal by Randy Tieman with
less than seven minutes
remaining in the third period
gave the Hawks their 4-4 draw in
Lambeth Sunday night.
The tying marker came on a
pass from John Mommersteeg
with the Hawks power play in
operation. It was the second goal
of the night for the Exeter club
with the opposition playing a man
short.
The first successful Exeter
power play produced the fourth
goal of the first period at 13.23
and evened the score at 2.2. Brian
Taylor finished off a three way
passing combination with
Murray Parsons and Kevin
Bestard.
The other two Exeter goals
were contributed by Randy
Gilfillan, Passes were provided
by Gerald Weido and Harry
Smits. The game was cleanly
played throughout with only nine
penalties being called. The
Hawks were only assessed for
two minor infractions.
