a hay ride

Thursday evening 24 girls of
the Explorers enjoyed a hayride.
Mr. Don Finkbeiner drove the
tractor; Mrs. Don Finkbeiner
and Mrs. Jim Finkbeiner ac-
companied the girls. On their
return to Zion United Church they
had wieners and hot chocolate
prepared by Mrs. Earl Lippert
and Mrs. Cliff Kenney. Saturday
the Explorers realized more than
$20 from their bottle drive.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter Weber and
Shelley attended anniversary
services in Zurich United Church
Sunday. They were guests of Mr.
& Mrs. Clarence Schade.
Mr. & Mrs. Ed Hendrick spent
the weekend in Welland.

funeral of Mr. Smith's brother.

Primary and junior classes
enjoyed costume parades.
Students' Council members
awarded prizes to students
judged as best in six categories;
space, native costume, comic,
Hallowe'en, storybook and
animal.
A film, a spooky slide, sound
show and a Hallowe'en play
written by a grade 8 student,
Betty Gower and presented by
students from the two grade 8
classes provided a very en-
tertaining program for the
primary and junior students.
The Kindergarten classes had
their own parties, A spook
parade, bobbing for apples, and
popping corn made their first
Hallowe'en at school an exciting
day.
An important event for many
students who gave up recess and
noon hour play to practise for the
October 22, inter-school cross
country competition ended very'
successfully for Huron Ceti?,
tennial.
Both girls and boys were first
out of nine schools in total
scoring. First in their divisions
were: Bob Lawrence (sr. boys),
Tim Lawrence (int. boys),
Richard Johns (midget boys),
Janice Webster (midget girls),
Connie King was second in the
midget girls event. Placing
fourth in their divisions were
Billy Joe Seymour (jr. boys),
Teresa Ferris (int. girls), Gordon
Geddess (sr. boys).
The midget and intermediate
girls won their team awards.
About 80 students worked very
hard for over a month to train for
the event. Fewer than 50 could be
chosen to represent the school.
Bravo and thanks to staff and
students for their time and effort.
A students' council trophy was
awarded to Mrs. McArthur's
Grade 1 class for a week
following daily inspections for
class-room cleanliness by
students' council members, The
trophy will be awarded
throughout the year for various
announced inter-class com-
petitions.
Since the spring of 1973 films
have not been available from the
ministry of education in Toronto,
The ,learning materials division
phased out its operation to the
county boards. In Huron County a
new media centre has been set up
with Dave Bieman as co-
ordinator. Close to 600 films are
now availabe to the schools of
Huron County.
November 21 will be
professional development day for
all teachers in Huron County.
Students will not attend classes
on this day.
Teachers of Huron Centennial
will be meeting in the morning
with several other staffs for a
metric workshop. The present
imperial system of measure will,
in the next few years, be com-
pletely replaced by the Metric
system.
The staff will return to the
school from Stephen Central for
afternoon and evening teacher -
parent interviews. Appointments
wilP4 e arranged for parents to
pick 'hp. their childrens' reports
and discuss their progress with
the teachers.
