Former minor hockey 0-or
signs as official in WHA
For most young hockey
players, their ambition is to
reach the National Hockey
league and receive the plaudits of
fans as they race up an down the
ice.
A former star performer with
Exeter minor hockey teams has
competition during last season.
His interest and enthusiasm in
furthering his refereeing career
took him to Haliburton the past
two summers to take part in the
referee school operated by Vern
13uffey and other top professional
officials.
This past September, Graham
was one of only 10 men from the
85 at Haliburton picked by Buffey
to attend a WHA tryout camp at
Bramalea.
Four days of practice sessions
at Bramalea apparently con-
vinced Buffey as lie called Herp
shortly after to offer the job. Only
two others were selected from
this camp.
One of the others chosen was
Bob Kolari of Toronto who along
with Jim Lever handled the last
game of the 1970-71 championship
series between the Exeter Hawks
and Haliburton Huskies.

Graham was one of the
linesmen named by World
Hockey Association referee-in-
chief Vern Buffey to handle the
game between the Quebec
Nordiques and the New England
Whalers,
After a brief, but successful
career in officiating in the OHA,
Graham was notified Tuesday
morning that he was being of-
fered a contract by the WHA.
He will work seven more
games in the next four weeks as
he completes his term of em-
ployment with the Canadian
Imperial Bank of Commerce in
St. Catharines and then goes into
officiating full time.
Graham's next game will be
Sunday's home contest of the
Toronto Taros. Future week-end
games will take him to
Cleveland, Winnipeg, Edmonton
and Vancouver.
The 23 year-old son of Mr. and
Mrs, Ken Hern, now of Erin and
formerly of Exeter took up of-
ficiating when a shoulder injury
ended a promising hockey
career.
He played two years of Junior
"B" hockey in Milton and then
spent one year with the Brandon
Wheat Kings in the Western
major junior league.
Graham started the 1971-72
hockey season as a linesman in
OHA Junior "413" ranks and
worked his way up to Major "A"
reached this ambition but in a
little different way.
Graham Hern, who was a top
forward with the Exeter pee wees

International pee wee tour-
nament a little more than 10
years ago participated in his first

The Lucan-Ilderton Jets came
out on the short end of the score in
the first exhibition hockey game
of the season Tuesday night.
The Jets travelled to Stratford
and suffered a 4-1 defeat at the
hands of the Stratford Per ths, the
club they defeated for the OHA
Senior "B" championship last
spring.
Each team scored a goal in the
second period and Stratford
came on strong with three late
third period goals to down the
tiring Jets. The game was played
on very soft ice at the Stratford
arena.
Don Burton opened the scoring
for Stratford at 9.19 of the middle
stanza and only three minutes
later Tom Hodgins took a pass
from Terry Bourne and knotted
the count for the Jets.
John MacLean, Dave Schnurr
and Dan Burton scored the third
period Stratford goals, Dan
Liepala, formerly of the Sudbury
Wolves was in goal for the Jets

By TERESA ONDREJICKA
Tuesday marked another game
in girls Huron-Perth Conference
basketball for this season. This
time St. Mary's hosted South
Huron to a double header with
both junior and senior teams
from South Huron suffering
losses.
The seniors started off their
game strong leading St. Marys
right through the first half. A lot
of team get together was
displayed at this game. They
played hard and took advantage
of many good scoring op-
portunities. The final score in the
game was 40-29.
Debbie Wooden basketed 11,
while Susan Luther stacked up 10.
The only other scorer in the game
was Val Sweet with an eight point
come on.
In the junior game the girls
played well and their shooting
ability showed some im-
provement.The girls finally went
down to defeat losing 37-24.
Scoring went to Gail Fuller
chalking up nine, Heather Wein
following closely with seven,
Janet Pryde sinking four and
Gayle Ecker and Marie Jarvis
each claiming two.
One observation I made while
in St. Marys is that South Huron's
cheering abilities are good and
were certainly displayed well
that day. 8etween the Cross
Country Team and the Basketball
team, one thing is for sure, that
we out yelled St. Marys by a long
Shot.
